Abstract:
Elihu Katz (born 1926) is an American Israeli sociologist and media scholar who has made substantial contributions to the field of communication, specifically in the areas of media effects, diffusion, uses and gratifications and reception, and media events. This primary portion of Katz's papers documents his scholarly and professional activities at the Guttman Institute of Applied Social Research, and Annenberg Schools for Communication at the University of California and University of Pennsylvania, respectively. Materials pertaining to the University of Chicago, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and the Israel Broadcasting Authority are also present, but less substantially so. The collection is divided into ten series and includes correspondence; drafts of talks, papers, articles, and books; research notes; conference materials; teaching materials and course documents; public opinion studies and reports; Israeli broadcasting materials; and biographical documents.

Gene-Ann Polk was a physician, hospital administrator, professor of pediatrics at Columbia University, and president of the Susan Smith McKinney Steward Medical Society. She was involved with various organizations for Black women physicians in and around New York. The materials in this collection are related to Dr. Polk's education, her private practice, and her years at Harlem Hospital. The collection also includes materials Polk collected related to Black women physicians, and the records of the Susan Smith McKinney Steward Medical Society (SSMS).

Hartwig Kuhlenbeck papers, 1911-1984

Abstract:
Born in Germany in 1897, Dr. Hartwig Kuhlenbeck, a neuroanatomist, received his degrees of Ph.D. in Philosophy and of M.D. (summa cum laude) from the University of Jena, Germany. He spent several years lecturing in Japan and at the University of Breslau (Germany) before moving to the United States in 1933. Dr. Kuhlenbeck was appointed to several positions at the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania, beginning in 1935 as Acting Professor of Anatomy and retiring in 1982 as Emeritus Professor of Anatomy. He spent most of his professional career at Woman’s Medical College, with the exception of a two-year leave of absence from 1944-1946, when he served in the United States Army Medical Corps. Dr. Kuhlenbeck published over 150 works during his career as a world-renowned anatomist. He passed away in 1984.

Hahnemann University photograph collection, circa 1840-2004 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Hahnemann University Photograph Collection is an extensive collection that covers the people and buildings of Hahnemann from its beginnings in 1848 as the Homeopathic Medical College of Pennsylvania to 2004 as Hahnemann University Hospital. Much of the collection is a photographic record of the buildings that were used and constructed by the organization throughout its history. The photographs consistently span the lifetime of the school and hospital from the mid-1840s to turn of the twenty-first century. Shots include interiors, exteriors, construction sites, and aerial shots of the campus (and city). There are also a few shots of other homeopathic hospitals and schools in the nineteenth century. A significant portion of the collection visually documents the departments and medical instruments/equipment used by those departments. Hahnemann University’s long history began in 1848 with the founding of the Homeopathic Medical College of Pennsylvania. Over the years, the institution evolved in many ways, eventually becoming Hahnemann University and, later, the Drexel University College of Medicine. In the mid- to late-twentieth century, with the decline of homeopathy, Hahnemann re-invented itself as a nationally known academic medical center with prominence in cardiac surgery and cardiology, oncology, transplantation, training of non-physician health professionals, community health, and community mental health. This expertise led to many firsts for Hahnemann, including international advances in cardiac surgery. Dr. Florence Haseltine, MD, PhD is a biophysicist, licensed obstetrician-gynecologist and reproductive endocrinologist, writer, inventor, and advocate for women's health. The Florence Haseltine papers chronicle the career and personal life of Dr. Florence Haseltine and the Haseltine family. The records in this collection date from approximately 1802 to 2016, although the bulk of the records are from 1962 to 2014. This collection includes papers from Florence’s family, her work as a college student, her career as a research scientist, her various professional and organization activities, as well as her business and entrepreneurial efforts. Mary Pauline Root papers, 1883-1985 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Dr. (Mary) Pauline Root (b. 1859, d.1944) was a graduate of Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1883. She was the first female doctor to recieve an internship at Blockley Hospital in Philadelphia, and was reportedly the first female doctor to be sent on a mission by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. She carried out medical missionary work from 1885-1893 at a women's hospital in Madurai, India. Root completed post-graduate work at the Manhattan Eye and Ear Hospital before she was employed as the resident physican at Smith College from 1906-1909, where she taught courses on "hygiene". From 1919-1921, Root traveled around the United States teaching "social hygiene" in Native American communities and Indian Government Schools for the United States Bureau of Indian Affairs. Born and raised in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania, Dr. Doris Bartuska graduated from the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1954, where she also served her internship and residency. An endocrinologist, she joined the faculty in 1958, was an Associate Dean for Curriculum, President of the Medical Staff, and a member of the Board of Directors and President of the Alumni Association. Dr. Bartuska was Director of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism as well as the Endocrine Fellowship Training Program at Woman’s Medical College/Medical College of Pennsylvania. She was named Emeritus Professor of Medicine (Endocrinology) at Drexel University College of Medicine in 1996. Dr. Bartuska passed away in 2013. Abstract:
Stella Yates Botelho, M.D. (b. 1919) is an alumnus of Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania (M.D. 1949) and the University of Pennsylvania (A.B. 1940). She specialized in the field of physiology and had a distinguished career as a researcher and teacher. The papers include materials documenting both her personal life and professional career. While in medical school, Botelho contracted tuberculosis and spent nearly a year at Eagleville Sanatorium, which is discussed in her diary from this time. At the University of Pennsylvania Botelho taught courses in applied and medical physiology and she maintained an active research lab, studying respiratory physiology, neuromuscular physiology, the spinal cord, and secretion of exocrine glands. She published over 40 scientific articles in the field of physiology and was the principal investigator on numerous scientific grants. She mentored dozens of pre- and post-doctoral students. The collection contains the primary source material for a thorough institutional history of a major women's service organization that spans three-quarters of a century. Issues of professionalization, volunteerism, and social and occupational networks as they relate to women's professional and social careers are well-documented. The AWH records provide the sources to examine a classic example of a woman's association that self-consciously bridged private and public domains, actively sought to bring the resources of public associations and the state to the aid of individuals in their own communities, and, in those countries which most severely relegated women to the private household, offered women access to a professional and public career.

The Black Women Physicians Project records contains documentation of the lives and careers of Black women in medicine, compiled by Margaret Jerrido, who served as an Archivist at the Medical College of Philadelphia. Started in the 1980s by Jerrido, BWPP is an artificial collection (a collection with materials from disparate sources intentionally arranged for research use) and includes not only Biographical Reference Files, but also oral histories, planning materials that supported BWPP, and photographs. Dr. Agnes Gowdey graduated from Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1935, after attending Carroll College in Wisconsin. She was in general practice with a concentration in obstetrics for most of her career, practicing first in Philadelphia and later in Riverton, New Jersey. She had an ongoing relationship with the American Youth Foundation (AYF), especially their Camp Merrowvista. The collection documents this ongoing relationship with the camp and its champions. After retirement, Dr. Gowdey was very involved with elder care initiatives in Moorestown, N.J. The collection is most informative about Dr. Gowdey’s time as a student at Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania, her early private practice in the 1940s, and her involvement with Camp Merrowvista. Fresh Air with Terry Gross is a radio talk show produced by WHYY-FM in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and broadcast nationally on National Public Radio (NPR). Fresh Air began production in 1975 and features interviews with journalists, scholars, and experts in various fields aimed at putting current issues into a larger political, cultural, and historical framework. The Fresh Air audio archive represents more than 8,000 interviews which were recorded over the past 40 years in various audio formats—from analog reels to digital files. The digital collection contains files covering 7,000 Fresh Air episodes of the radio program’s original broadcast audio recordings.

Jean Scobie Davis, a 1914 graduate of Bryn Mawr College, taught economics and sociology at Agnes Scott College, Vassar College, Pierce College, Wells College and the American Women's College in Beirut. A lifetime interest in prison reform resulted in her work at the New York State Correctional Facility in Bedford Hills, New York. The Jean Scobie Davis papers is a collection consisting largely of Jean Scobie Davis' diaries and correspondence covering nearly all stages of her life. The collection, which dates from 1892 to 1985, is divided into seven subseries: "Autobiographical Material;" "Correspondence;" "Diaries;" "Family History;" "Photographs;" "Prison Reform;" and "Scrapbooks and Guestbook." Material found in the collection is diverse, and consists of letters, reports, bound diaries as well as loose diary pages, photographs, scrapbooks, and handwritten notes.

The Philadelphia Club of Advertising Women (PCAW) was founded in 1916 by sixteen women advertising executives. The Club participated in charitable efforts, offered advertising courses, published a newsletter (Ad-Land News), and hosted social events throughout its history. These efforts garnered national recognition for PCAW as a leading advertising organization. It also won them recognition locally as an organization committed to helping the community through scholarships and charitable giving. Phyllis Pray Bober (b. 1920) received her B.A. from Wellesley College in 1941. In 1973 she accepted the position of Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Bryn Mawr College which she held until 1980. Bober's life long interest in culinary history led to courses, "historical banquets", and a book: Art, Culture, and Cuisine: Ancient and Medieval Gastronony. The collection consist of miscellaneous materials on Bober's career, miscellaneous research notes, typescripts, materials course notes, lecture scripts, correspondence (organized by subject matter), miscellaneous correspondence filed chronologically, tapes and disks for her talks, and materials from her own graduate and undergraduate education.

Lucy T. Shoe Meritt papers, 1888-2003 (inclusive)

Lucy T. Shoe Meritt (1906- 2003) was an acclaimed archaeologist, scholar, teacher and editor who received her B.A, M.A, and Ph.D degrees from Bryn Mawr. During her life time, Shoe Meritt taught at Mount Holyoke College and the University of Texas at Austin, was a fellow at the American Academy of Rome, and served as the Editor of Publications for the American School of Classical Studies in Athens. Additionally, she was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study and the American Institute of Archaeology. She received the Gold Medal of the Archaeological Institute of America for Distinguished Archaeological Achievement in 1976. The collection is largely comprised of Shoe Meritt's correspondence with her family and notable scholars who were her contemporaries. It also includes diaries, publications, academic and professional papers, as well as photographs, postcards and scrapbooks.

Mary Katharine Woodworth (1900 – 1988) graduated from Bryn Mawr in 1924 with a Greek and English major and a minor in archaeology. She received her Ph. D in English from Bryn Mawr in 1933. After her book on British poet and genealogist Samuel Egerton Brydges was published in 1935, she began teaching in the English department at Bryn Mawr, and introduced the college's first course on 20th-century writers. She received a Distinguished Teaching Award from Bryn Mawr in 1968 upon her retirement. Her bequest of her entire estate to Bryn Mawr in 1988, which included Chagall's The Violinist, made her the 4th largest contributor to the college at the time. Phyllis Dubsky Feldkamp attended Bryn Mawr College as part of the class of 1937, and was a journalist living in France in the 1950s and 1960s where she began writing about fashion. She served as the Fashion and Style Editor for the Philadelphia Bulletin from 1968 to 1982, and also did much free-lance writing. The collection includes interviews and correspondence with figures in the fashion industry, and copies of nearly all of her writings. Additionally, it contains over 300 photographs, ranging from high quality prints to candids and photographs of herself, and stories and vignettes about growing up written by her daughter, Phoebe Feldkamp.

Abstract:
The Speer Family papers represent four generations of that family, with the bulk of material attributed to the last two generations, especially Robert Elliott Speer and his wife and three of his five children: Emma Bailey, Elliott, Margaret Bailey, and William Speer. The family was active in the Presbyterian Church, serving that institution in a variety of different capacities. The children, in addition to their religious roles, held prominent positions in academic administration. The family's papers primarily consist of the personal papers of the family, although they also contain the professional correspondence of Emma Bailey and Margaret Bailey Speer, both Bryn Mawr College alumnae. This collection, which dates from 1802 to 1982, contains letters, diaries, speeches, publications, awards, and photographs, although the vast majority of the material is the letters between family members.

Abstract:
Jeannette Ridlon Piccard, BMC class of 1918, was the first woman licensed to pilot a balloon in the United States, and the first woman to enter the stratosphere (with a flight that reached 57, 559 feet). She served as a consultant and lecturer for NASA's Manned Spacecraft Center from 1964-1970. At the age of 79 Piccard was ordained as a priest in the Episcopal Church, one of the "Philadelphia Eleven"- the first ordained female priests. The material in this collection consists of correspondence, writings by Picard, and writings of others, regarding her personal, religious, and aeronautical life.

Anne Truitt Papers, 1945-1997 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Anne Dean Truitt (1921-2004,) BMC 1943, was an artist and writer. Truitt's formal training as an artist began in 1948 when she studied sculpture at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Washington D. C. In the early 1960s Truitt began to develop what would become her signature style, applying layer upon layer of paint to hollow wooden structures. In the aftermath of two retrospective shows in the mid-1970s, Truitt began keeping detailed journals documenting the details of her life, her creative processes, her working methods, and her personal development. She converted the writing from one year into a book, Daybook, published in 1982. In 1986 more of her journal-writing was published as the book Turn. The 1991 retrospective led to her third book, Prospect, in 1996. The papers consist of manuscripts and drafts of Truitt's books and other writing, exhibition catalogs, correspondence, and records of travel.

Evelyn Jones Rich (BMC 1954) was the first Black residential student of Bryn Mawr College. While at Bryn Mawr, she was active in Students for Democratic Action the Bryn Mawr League, and the Self-Government Association. In 1954, she graduated with a BA in Political Science, and continued her education at Hunter College (CUNY) where she earned the MA in Social Studies. Rich later attended Columbia University where she earned the PhD in African History and Education. She has worked as a teacher, school administrator, and educational consultant throughout her life. This collection includes correspondence, articles, budgets, etc. from Evelyn Rich's various causes and organizations, including Lincoln House Outreach, the African American Institute, the New York City Public School District, and the Hunter College (CUNY) Campus Schools.

Phyllis Walter Goodhart (1913-1994) was a graduate of Bryn Mawr College (BA 1935) and a Latin and Greek scholar. While at Bryn Mawr, she developed a life-long interest in the works of the Italian humanists, especially Poggio Bracciolini. Mrs. Gordan's extensive scholarly papers reflect her many years of careful study of Italian humanism. Over the years she had acquired a notable collection of published and unpublished research materials from which she generated her meticulous notes on literally hundreds of medieval and Renaissance scholars and events. A majority of the collection is bibliographic and biographic notes on Renaissance leaders, scholars, and ecclesiastics. Additionally the collection contains a catalog of humanist manuscripts in European libraries, notes on Ernst Walser's archive of research materials, and a concordance for the numeration of Poggio' letters to Nicolaus de Niccolis in the editions of Gordan, Tonelli, Wilmanns, and Rüegg (unpublished). Ralph Hodgson and Aurelia Bolliger Hodgson papers, 1896-1984 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Very little is known about the early life of Ralph Hodgson (1871-1962), a British poet. In the 1890s, he worked as a newspaper and magazine illustrator, signing some of his works 'Yorick', and, in 1913, founded "The Sign of the Flying Fame" publishers along with Claud Lovat Fraser and Holbrook Jackson. Hodgson published a variety of poetry volumes prior to joining that army at the beginning of World War I. In 1923, he accepted a position as a lecturer in English at Sendai University in Japan. It was here that he met his third wife, Aurelia Bolliger (1898-1984), an American born teacher at the Women's College of Sendai. The couple faced a variety of difficulties during the early years of their marriage, including Aurelia's young age, loss of job because of her relationship with Ralph, and her family's struggle to accept their marriage. Abstract:
Constance Maravell was a Bryn Mawr graduate of the class of 1965. In the years follower her time at graduate school at the University of Chicago, Maravell delved into the world of art. She adopted the name Zinnia to represent her artistic identiy, and has exhibited her work of high art photography in the Washington D.C. area numerous times. Zinnia's work has been recognized and praised in a number of newspapers and newsletters. This collection contains the clippings from the articles that acknowledged her work, as well as an assortment of pamphlets and booklets summarizing her pieces in exhibitions, and a few select photographs taken at one of Zinnia's exhibition openings.

Karl Detlev Jessen (1872-1919) was a professor of German Literature at Bryn Mawr College from 1910 to 1919. He was involved with the Socialist movement in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The Karl D. Jessen papers house the records of Karl D. Jessen. This collection dates from 1872 to 1980, with bulk dates of 1890 to 1917. This collection consists mostly of correspondence between Jessen and his family, friends, and colleagues, in addition to manuscripts and manuscript drafts, clippings, scrapbooks, bibliography cards of Jessen's research, and other ephemera.

This collection contains papers related to Jane Martin's personal, professional, and academic life (c. 1968-2008). Martin held a PhD in African History, and focused most of her life and career around Liberia. Her life as an academic and professional who lived and worked in both Africa and the US often intersected with her personal correspondence and records, and the archive reflects those overlaps. Martin's research into specific tribes, people, and movements in Africa would be useful as primary and secondary records of history on the continent. Her records of syllabi and teaching philosophies chart out American influence on higher education in Liberia and Nigeria where she worked. Documents here also show her work with several institutions where she supported educational programs. Abstract:
Melanie Atherton Updegraff (1886-1973) was a 1908 graduate of Bryn Mawr who went on to do missionary work for the Presbyterian Mission Board alongside her husband, Reverend David Benjamin Updegraff. The two were primarily stationed in Kolhapur and later Nipani, in West India. The collection includes correspondence between Updegraff and her sisters, children, and sister-in-law, among other family members, photographs of the Atherton and Updegraff families, an autograph collection, and brochures, pamphlets, and official documentation pertaining to Updegraff's missionary work. Updegraff's four sisters and three daughters all went to Bryn Mawr, and we hear about entrance exams, musical productions, and other campus activities in their letters.

Abstract:
Growing out of egalitarian concerns of members of the Society of Friends, the Pennsylvania Abolition Society, as it is now known, was founded in 1775 as the Society for the Relief of Free Negroes Unlawfully Held in Bondage, but the Revolution caused its early Quaker members to suspend operations until 1784, when it reorganized with a broader base. From the beginning, the Abolition Society's programs were devoted not only to the abolition of slavery, but to the social and economic improvement of Black Americans as well. This collection of records documents the Pennsylvania Abolition Society's history and its work from mid 1700s to the 1990s, and particularly during the 1800s, through minutes and reports, manumissions and indentures, correspondence, financial papers, and a significant assortment of miscellaneous papers from other anti-slavery and humanitarian organzations.

Since its founding in 1915, The Print Club has achieved a national and international reputation and membership. Originally, its purpose was to establish in Philadelphia a medium for the dissemination, study, production and collection of works by printmakers, American and foreign. Renamed The Print Center in 1996, its mission has expanded to include appreciation and encouragement of the printed image in all forms, including photography. The membership has always included both collectors and printmakers, but the Center also strives to serve the larger community. The Print Center offers numerous educational programs and mounts between six and ten exhibitions each year. The Print Club archives consist of a variety of files covering its administrative, financial, exhibition, and general history, from the club's founding in 1915 to 1993.
