Mary Larkin Thomas family papers, 1807-1981 (inclusive)

Abstract:: A graduate of Westtown School (West Chester, Pa.), Mary Larkin Thomas (1886-1981) was a horticulturalist who was known, along with her mother and sister, in the area of Chester County, Pennsylvania as an "herb doctor." Thomas practiced herbal medicine; in particular, she used these skills to care for the infants of local Quaker families. She was also involved in numerous organizations, particularly Quaker associations. The Mary Larkin Thomas family papers, 1807-1981, include mostly correspondence, photographs, and other personal papers of Mary Larkin Thomas as well as papers of her immediate family members, in particular her sister Rachel C. Thomas and her mother Rebecca J. (Hallowell) Thomas. There are also some financial records of Mary's father, R. Henry Thomas.

Abstract:: Williamson Free School of Mechanical Trades (now known as Williamson College of the Trades) in Middletown Township, Pennsylvania (Delaware County) was established in 1888 with an endowment from Philadelphia merchant and philanthropist Isaiah V. Williamson. The tuition-free school initially offered vocational training for high school-aged men in areas such as bricklaying, carpentry, and machine shop. Since becoming a post-secondary institution in 1961, the school now offers associate degrees in various fields of specialized technology. Abstract:: Quakertown, Pennsylvania, incorporated in 1855, is a town located in the northeast portion of Upper Bucks County. The town remained quite small until the mid-nineteenth century, when the construction of the North Pennsylvania Railroad helped turn it into a significant commercial center. The Quakertown Historical Society scrapbook collection, circa 1900-2009, consists of scrapbooks compiled by various creators and collected by the Quakertown Historical Society. The scrapbooks contain primarily newspaper clippings, with some photographs, ephemera, and other materials. Most relate to local people, organizations, places, and events in Quakertown.

Abstract:: The Holland School at Curren Terrace in Norristown, Pennsylvania opened around 1930 as the Martha Holland Day School. As of 2012, the Holland School was still operating as Tot Time Child Development Center. The Holland School scrapbooks, 1931-1976, consist of scrapbooks put together by classes, with thank-you notes to teachers, photographs, and descriptions of and ephemera from class trips. There are also some loose newspaper clippings and greeting cards in the collection, as well as three notebooks from class secretaries.
