Overview and metadata sections

The Community Weekday Bible School of Jenkintown was organized in 1921 under the auspices of the Community Council of Religious Education. It conducted one hour weekday religious classes for Protestant children in first through eighth grades during release time from school. Its enrollment was maintained at around 300 students.

This collection consists of scrapbooks of the Community Weekday Bible School of Jenkintown, compiled by President of the Community Council of Religious Education President George S. Young. The scrapbooks consist of notices to parents, commencement programs, and clippings. The clippings report on the School’s openings and closings and other activities, as well as the issue of religious education. There are many clippings on teaching religion to public school children on release time leading up to and following the 1948 Supreme Court decision in the Champaign case.

Loose items have been removed from the volumes and placed in folders.

Summary descriptive information on this collection was compiled in 2011-2012 as part of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania’s Hidden Collections Initiative for Pennsylvania Small Archival Repositories (HCI-PSAR), using data provided by the Old York Road Historical Society. The HCI-PSAR project was funded by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

This is a preliminary finding aid. No physical processing, rehousing, reorganizing, or folder listing was done in the HCI-PSAR project.
