Isaac Sharpless (1848-1920) was the president of Haverford College from 1887 until his resignation in 1917. He was the son of Aaron and Susanna (Forsythe) Sharpless and was born in Birmingham Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. In 1876, he married Lydia Trimble Cope. Sharpless taught at Westtown Boarding School from 1867 to 1868 and 1873 to 1875. He taught mathematics and astronomy at Haverford College from 1875 to 1884. In 1884, he was named Dean of the faculty and in 1887, he was named president of the College. During his tenure as president, the College saw improvements in the areas of enrollment, academic standards, endowments, and facilities.
Frederic Cope Sharpless was born in 1880 in Philadelphia. He graduated from Haverford College in 1900, and from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1903. Dr. Sharpless retired from active practice in 1946. During the Korean war, however, he returned to medicine for four years, serving as a community doctor in Greensboro, Vermont. He died in 1971, at the age of 91.
