Abstract:: Friends Neighborhood Guild is a social welfare agency established by Hicksite Quakers in 1879 to serve the Poplar section of North Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It began as a volunteer organization for immigrant children and evolved into a settlement house and community center. This collection primarily contains early records of Friends Neighborhood Guild, and also the records of two related Quaker societies, the Friendly Settlement Association and the Spring Street Mission.

Abstract:: Philadelphia Young Friends' Association was a Hicksite organization established in 1888 for educational and social purposes. The Young Friends Association established and operated The Whittier, a hotel and social center in Philadelphia. The name of the Association was changed in 1957 to The Whittier Association. The collection contains minutes, financial records, correspondence, and other records.

Richard Humphreys Foundation Records, 1837-1982 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Richard Humphreys Foundation was created as the result of a bequest of Richard Humphreys (1750-1832), a Philadelphia Quaker who left funds for the establishment of a school for African Americans in Philadelphia. The school was founded as the Institute for Colored Youth. A group of Quakers, known first as the Association and after 1842 as the Corporation, oversaw the Institute. Actual management was performed by a board of managers who reported to the Corporation. The Corporation was successively known as the Corporation of the Institute for Colored Youth at Cheyney and the Corporation for Cheyney Training School for Teachers. In 1922, the State of Pennsylvania assumed control of the School, and the corporation changed its name to Richard Humphreys Foundation, with funds from the endowment to be used for promoting education of African Americans to become teachers. Abstract:: Quakers Uniting in Publications (QUIP) is a group founded in 1983 to promote production and distribution of Quaker materials. It is an international network of organizations and individuals that work to make Quaker publications more accessible and to support the production of Quaker publications through forums, conferences, annual meetings, and collaborative projects. This collection includes documents concerning the group's formation, membership lists, treasurer's records, correspondence, annual and midyear meetings, and catalogs. Additional donations in 2006 and 2012 expanded the collection to include submissions, drafts, and the production process of Whispers of Faith: Young Friends share their experiences of Quakerism (2005) and Spirit Rising: Young Quaker Voices (2010).

Bettle Family Papers, 1800-1955 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Bettle family were prominent 19th century Quaker merchants in Philadelphia. Samuel Bettle, Sr., was Clerk of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting at the time of the Separation in 1827. His son, Samuel Bettle, Jr., was also a Quaker minister. They had at least five children, among whom was Samuel, Jr.; the latter married Mary Ann Jones in 1831. The collection includes correspondence, biographical clippings, business records, and other papers of Samuel Bettle and his family. Correspondents include William Savery, Jesse Kersey, Stephen Grellet, and other prominent Friends.

Mary Ellicott Arnold (1876-1968) Papers, 1888-1970 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Mary Ellicott Arnold (1876-1968) was a Quaker writer and social activist, known for her work with consumer cooperatives. After an unsuccessful farming venture in her youth, Mary Ellicott Arnold and her lifelong companion, Mabel Reed, worked with the Karok Indians in California as employees of the United States Indian Bureau. After a period as chief organizer for the U.S. Employment Service in New York State, she and Mabel Reed were involved in a number of successful cooperative ventures. She was an early Treasurer of the Cooperative League, was very active in the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, and was a member of Providence Monthly Meeting, Media, Pennsylvania. The collection includes correspondence, financial papers, notebooks, reports, and clippings concerning Mary Ellicott Arnold's varied activities. Correspondents include Wallace J. Campbell, Moses Coady, Darlington Hoopes, George Meany, Richard H. Rhoads, and many others.

Abstract:: Contains papers relating to the Emlen family, residents of Middletown and West Chester, Pennsylvania. Chiefly correspondence (1817-1849) of Sarah Foulke Farquhar Emlen (1787-1849), Quaker minister, relating to her travels to visit Friends' meetings in England, Ireland, New England, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Virginia. Also correspondence of Quaker ministers 1740-1790, copybooks, and memorabilia. Fell Family Papers, 1753-1923 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Joseph Fell (1804-1887), the son of Dr. David and Phebe Schofield Fell, was a Pennsylvania Quaker teacher and farmer. In 1835 he married Harriet Williams, the daughter of Samuel and Sarah Watson Williams of Buckingham, Pa. Joseph and Harriet Fell had five children: William W. (1836-1874), Emily Catherine who married William Seal in 1863; David Newlin (1840-1919) who married Martha Trego; Edward Watson (1843-1901) who married Elizabeth Matlack Kenderdine in 1867; and Lucy W. Fell, born 1847. Edward Watson and Elizabeth Kenderdine Fell had four children. The eldest was Edward Lawrence Fell (1867-1943) who married Esther May Willets. Both were Swarthmore College graduates, Class of 1888, and members of Green Street Monthly Meeting. This collection contains papers of the Williams and Fell family members, Pennsylvania Hicksite Quakers. These papers include student papers of E. Lawrence Fell, family correspondence (1819-1885), pictures, and miscellaneous deeds and memorabilia.

Hadassah M. L. (Hadassah Moore Leeds) Holcombe Diaries, 1904-1937 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Hadassah M.L. Holcombe (1891-1978) was a Quaker educator who was a co-founder of the Friends Council of Education and served as Secretary of the Friends General Conference and Chairman of the Committee on Education of the Friends World Conference. Hadassah Holcombe taught mathematics at the Germantown Friends School for ten years, and, in addition to her other activities, served on the Boards of Swarthmore College, Antioch, George School, Sidwell Friends, and Haverford College. The collection contains her diaries from 1904-1937.

Abstract:: William I. Hull, a Quaker pacifist, taught history at Swarthmore College from 1892 until his death in 1939. He was the Librarian of Friends Historical Library and also authored numerous books and articles, particularly on the subjects of Quakers in Holland, William Penn, peace, and international relations. The Papers contain correspondence (1900-1939), diaries (1892-1939), published and unpublished writings, papers relating to conferences and committees in which he participated, reference materials, and study and teaching notes. Of particular interest are his notes on the history of Quakerism in Holland, including files on persons and places as well as a translation of the minutes of Friesland Monthly Meeting of Friends (1677-1701), and a two-volume manuscript of his unpublished history of Swarthmore College. His correspondence primarily concerns his peace activities, particularly his efforts toward limitation of armaments and an advocacy of international arbitration.

Lewis-Fussell Family Papers, 1698-1978 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Bartholomew Fussell was a Quaker minister who married Rebecca Bond at Abington Monthly Meeting in Pennsylvania in 1781. He was a member of Uwchlan Monthly Meeting of Friends at his death in 1838. The couple had eight children, viz. Esther, William, Sarah, Joseph, Jacob, Bartholomew, Rebecca, and Solomon. Esther married John Lewis in 1818, and they had four children, among whom was Graceanna Lewis, Quaker scientist and humanitarian. Joseph Fussell married Elizabeth Moore in 1814, and their eldest son, Henry Bartholomew, married Maria Lewis. Rebecca Fussell married Joseph Trimble in 1837, and their only daughter, Esther Jane, married Isaac Lippincott. The collection contains correspondence, journals, other writings, account books, albums, photographs, and miscellaneous notes of members of the Lewis and Fussell families of Chester and Delaware Counties in Pennsylvania. Abstract:: Richmond Pearson Miller (1902-1972) was a Quaker author and educator. He was the son of J. Milton and Sara G. Miller In 1926 Alice Leinbach. He died in 1972. This collection contains the papers of Richmond P. Miller, Quaker author and educator, including correspondence, writings, and papers relating to various Quaker concerns. Miller was involved with the 1962 NBC television production, Gentle Persuaders; the William Penn Tercentenary in 1964; the William Jeanes Memorial Library controversy; and the United Nations.
