Comly-White Family Papers, 1771-1961 (inclusive)

Abstract:: John Comly, a Quaker minister and school master, was born in 1773. He married Rebecca Budd, a fellow teacher at the Westtown School, in 1803. They operated the Pleasant Hill Boarding School on their Byberry farm from 1804-1815. The collection includes family correspondence, the journal of John Comly's brother, Isaac, other manuscript writings, financial and legal papers, and miscellaneous papers. Also includes the ledger and memorabilia of Pleasant Hill Boarding School and papers of Helen Comly White relating to her student years at Swarthmore College from 1870-75.

Emily Howland Family Papers, 1763-1929 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Emily Howland (1827-1929) was a Quaker humanitarian and educator who is particularly known for her work with formerly-enslaved African Americans in Virginia during and after the American Civil War. A birthright Friend, Emily Howland was the only daughter of Slocum and Hannah (Tallcot) Howland of Sherwood, N.Y. She was educated locally and for a brief period in Philadelphia, and then moved to Washington, D.C. in 1857 to teach at the Miner School for Freedmen. During the war she worked at a contraband camp in Virginia, establishing a school and coordinating relief activities. She returned to Sherwood after her father's death in 1881 and contributed time and money toward the maintenance of the Sherwood School. She continued her interest in the education of African-Americans in the south, and was also involved in woman suffrage and temperance. Benjamin Sharp Family Papers, 1809-1915 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Benjamin Sharp (1858-1915), a zoologist who was primarily affiliated with the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, attended Swarthmore College (1876) and earned a M.D. and Ph. D. from the University of Pennsylvania. A birthright member of the Society of Friends (Quakers), Dr. Sharp was the son of Benjamin and Hannah B. (Leedom) Sharp of the Germantown section of Philadelphia, Pa. He was married to Virginia May of Ridley, Mass. The family moved to Massachusetts in the early 20th century, and Dr. Sharp served as Representative for Nantucket to the Massachusetts Legislature. The collection consists primarily of correspondence from friends and colleagues, memorabilia from Swarthmore College, and family materials, including the diary of Rebecca Sharp.

Abstract:: The Walkers, Conard, and Cowgills were Quaker families of Frederick County, Virginia, and Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. The collections contains papers of the Walker and allied Coates, Cowgill, and Conard families, including general correspondence (1792-1912), Civil War correspondence and diaries (1893-1900) of Union soldier Edward B. Abstract:: The collection contains diaries of Ann Price Gibson Paschall Jackson (1792-1874) who served as a Quaker minister for over forty years. Ann P. Paschall (later Ann P. Jackson) was recorded as a minister of Darby Monthly Meeting (Hicksite) in 1831. In 1849, she moved to Birmingham Monthly Meeting where her children were members. The collection contains her manuscript diaries, 1814 to 1874, and a manuscript copy of extracts from her journals, 1813-1856, compiled by her daughter-in-law, Ann P. (Sharples) Paschall. The diaries concern religious and practical matters. The collection also includes a daily memo book kept by her father, Samuel Gibson; a brickyard account of Nathan H. Sharples of West Chester, Pa.; a daily farm diary of Nicholas W. Townsend of Birmingham Monthly Meeting, and some miscellaneous papers.

Joshua Evans Papers, ca. 1788- ca. 1804 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Joshua Evans, a Quaker minister and abolitionist, was born in 1731 in West Jersey. About the year 1754, he experienced a religious conversion and thereafter devoted his life to sharing his rigorous interpretation of the gospel through an ascetic and pious life style and simple ministry. Barely educated, he was nevertheless acknowledged as a minister by Haddonfield Monthly Meeting in 1759. Evans was a vegetarian and a fervent proponent of the peace testimony, Quaker plainness, and ending slavery. In 1798, he traveled through the southern states condemning slavery in the strongest terms. Returning to New Jersey, he died in July 1798. Evans is representative of the radical, "primitive" Quaker tradition and reflects the diversity of late eighteenth century Quakerism. This collection contains portions of the journals kept while traveling in the ministry among Friends in New York, New England, Canada, the South, and elsewhere, mostly in the period 1788-1798. Abstract:: The collections contain journals, correspondence, and miscellaneous Quaker papers. A small journal kept by Thomas Carman, 1864 and 1867, describes his travels which included upstate New York, Baltimore, and Richmond (where he attended general Quaker meetings and visited African American services). Also a photocopy of a journal kept by Catharine Williams, describing a trip to Iowa in 1864 where she attended Yearly Meeting. Correspondents include Benjamin Angell, Edward Dorland, George M. Sisson, and Jeremiah Hubbard. Quaker materials include a 1786 manuscript describing a newspaper article on Quakers in France, an 1805 acrostic by William Hawkins devised for Mary Roach who was accompanying a traveling minister, copied poems and essays on religious themes, and a folder of miscellaneous materials which reflect the Carmans' support of organizations such as the Friends Academy at Union Springs, N.Y., a fair held in New York City to raise funds for freedmen, the Home for the Friendless...(see more)

Abstract:: George M. Justice was a successful Philadelphia merchant and important Hicksite Quaker. Beginning in 1825 until shortly before his death, he kept volumes of memorandum reflecting his thoughts on religion, the Hicksite Separation and its aftermath in Philadelphia, family information, astronomy, slavery, and other topics.

Sharpless Family Papers, 1792-1892 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The collection represents two branches of the Sharpless family of Pennsylvania descended from Joseph and Lydia (Lewis) Sharpless). It contains correspondence between extended Sharpless family relations including Sharpless, Hunn, Jones, Drinker families and journals of Joshua Sharpless, a Quaker minister who worked with Native Americans and visited Quaker meetings in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Canada. Correspondence covers various topics including the travels of women ministers, yellow fever, and contemporary events. The second series contains primarily nineteenth century correspondence of the extended family of Townsend and Mary Brinton (Jones) Sharpless. It includes letters written by Henry H. G. Sharpless during his European tour and extensive correspondence received by Ezekiel Hunn who served briefly in the Union Army during the Civil War.

Abstract:: Contains the papers of the Allen Family, a Quaker family of Philadelphia and Delaware County, Pennsylvania, which traced its ancestry back to one of William Penn's commissioners. Includes papers relating to the Allen and related Breidenhart, Casdorp, Gibbons, Hubley, Jacobs, Matlack, and Samuel families. The Allen family papers contain extensive genealogical material, family correspondence, journals and memorials which provide excellent source material on Quaker family life in the 19th century in the Philadelphia area. Of particular interest are letters from Charles and Rebecca Allen to their children, several of whom were educated at Westtown School.

Kent-Barnard Family Papers, 1785/1928 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Daniel Kent, emigrated to Chester County, Pa. from Ireland, in 1785. He joined the Society of Friends (Quakers) in 1790, and married Esther Hawley in 1791. Their great-grandson Henry Simmons Kent (1833-1906) was active in the establishment of Swarthmore Monthly Meeting and the Borough of Swarthmore, Pennsylvania. The collection includes material used by Daniels' great-granddaughter Ella Kent Barnard in preparation for the writing of three books. Among these materials are genealogical charts and data, research correspondence, and original letters and documents. Notable among the latter is the correspondence between Daniel Kent and his parents, William and Ann Kent. Collection also includes diaries and journals. A manuscript entitled "The Rise of Swarthmore," by Isabella Tyson, describes the meeting of Friends in the home of her parents to discuss plans for the establishment of the College.

Hannah M. (Hannah Moore) Levick Family Papers, 1766-1896 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Hannah M. Levick was a Hicksite Quaker, the daughter of Richard and Sara Moore of Richmond in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and a granddaughter of Theophilus and Hannah Foulke. In 1843 she married William M. Levick of Philadelphia, and they became members of Green Street Monthly Meeting. Her husband was employed as a conveyancer in Philadelphia, and Hannah wrote a number of articles for Quaker publications. The collection includes correspondence of Theophilus and Hannah Foulke, 1794-1796, and a copy of a letter written by Emmor Kimber concerning an escaped slave, Henry Franklin. Also includes travel journals of William M. and Hannah M. Levick (1844, 1852-53, 1866), poetry by Hannah M. Norman Walton Swayne Family Papers, 1733-1987 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Swayne family were Quakers of southern Chester County, Pennsylvania. Caleb Swayne was a farmer and tanner, and his son, Benjamin, also operated a tan yard and conducted a school for boys, the London Grove Boarding School. Evan Thomas Swayne also taught at London Grove, but moved to the Eaton Institute, a boarding school for girls in Kennett, after 1865. His son, Edward Swayne, had a greenhouse business and wrote poetry. Edward's sister, Anna Belle, was a photographer before her marriage to Albert Taylor Jackson. Edward's son, Norman Walton Swayne, attended Swarthmore College and then taught at the George School; he was also the family genealogist. The collection includes genealogical research, correspondence, poetry and other writings, commonplace books, deeds and financial records, and miscellaneous materials. Abstract:: Bartholomew Fussell was a Quaker minister who married Rebecca Bond at Abington Monthly Meeting in Pennsylvania in 1781. He was a member of Uwchlan Monthly Meeting of Friends at his death in 1838. The couple had eight children, viz. Esther, William, Sarah, Joseph, Jacob, Bartholomew, Rebecca, and Solomon. Esther married John Lewis in 1818, and they had four children, among whom was Graceanna Lewis, Quaker scientist and humanitarian. Joseph Fussell married Elizabeth Moore in 1814, and their eldest son, Henry Bartholomew, married Maria Lewis. Rebecca Fussell married Joseph Trimble in 1837, and their only daughter, Esther Jane, married Isaac Lippincott. J. Wilmer Lundy Family Papers, 1781-1964 (inclusive)

Abstract:: J. Wilmer Lundy (1869-1966), Quaker businessman and writer, was the son of Joseph and Mary Evans Lundy of Rancocas, New Jersey. He graduated from Trenton Business College in 1889 and in 1900 formed a partnership with Elmer J. Shinn. In 1895 he married Bessie Morris Roberts, daughter of Stacy and Harriet Roberts. They had one daughter, Elizabeth, who married an Indian businessman and took the name Kamela Nimbkar. J. Wilmer Lundy died in Newtown in 1966 at the age of 97. The collection contains genealogical files, correspondence, speeches and writings, business, financial, and legal records, pictures, and other memorabilia of J. Wilmer Lundy and other members of the Lundy family of New Jersey.

Abstract:: The Lupton family was a Quaker family from Hopewell, Virginia. David Lupton, the son of Joseph and Rachel Lupton, married Mary Hollingsworth at Hopewell Monthly Meeting of Friends in 1777. They had nine children, including a son, Joel, who married Sarah Haines. Joel, and to a lesser extent his brother, Lewis, was known as an inventor who was credited with a number of mechanical improvements to farm machinery. Another brother, Nathan, was involved with his father in the operation of a mill on Babb's Run. Jonah H. Lupton married twice, first to Martha Ann Sidwell, who died in 1836, and second to Lydia Walker. Abstract:: Charles Smith Ogden (1822-1904) was a Quaker businessman, genealogist, and civic leader. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, educated in Friends' schools, and married Emma Corbit in 1848. He worked as a wholesale druggist before the Civil War, was active on the committee to elect Abraham Lincoln, and served as Consul to Quebec, Canada, 1860-1864. In 1886, he began a tour around the world, which is recounted in his travel letters, 1886-1891. This collection contains genealogical material, family correspondence, scrapbooks and memorabilia. Abstract:: The Collins family was a Quaker family of New England and New York City. Abel Collins (1770-1834) was a birthright Quaker and a minister recorded by Hopkinton Monthly Meeting. He married Mary A. Wilbur (d. 1858) of Hopkinton in 1790, and they had eight children. One of their sons, Abel Francis Collins, was clerk of South Kingston Monthly Meeting. He had three sons who attended Friends Boarding School in Providence, Rhode Island, and continued their studies at Brown University. The collection contains extensive family correspondence (1812-1903) which covers a variety of topics, including schools and education, Quaker concerns, topical events of the day, and family life; journals of Francis W. Abstract:: This small collection concerning the Robbins family, Quakers who owned the historic Seven Stars Tavern property in Salem County, New Jersey, was compiled by John H. Bourne. The Robbins family purchased the tavern about 1805, and the property remained in the family until it was purchased by John H. Bourne in 1927. The Robbins family belonged to Pilesgrove Monthly Meeting (Hicksite), which in 1928 became Woodstown Monthly Meeting. John Bourne also was a member of Woodstown Monthly Meeting. The collection contains some genealogical information on the Robbins family and correspondence and articles concerning the Seven Stars property, as well as poetry, prose, and a diary (1875) of Annie Lawrie Robbins (1828-1916), the unmarried Robbins daughter who kept house in the Seven Stars homestead, and other family material. In addition to the history of the property, the collection, particularly the diary, offers insight into the life of rural South Jersey Quakers in the late nineteenth century.

Abstract:: Papers of the Jabez Jenkins family of Pennsylvania, 1829-1849. Includes "On board the Packet Ship George Washington Capt. Holdrege Liverpool to New York 1833: Some Recollections of England &c." 1833, manuscript Recollections of travel in England and Scotland in 1833 by Jabez Jenkins. Jenkins stopped for a relatively short time in England, on his way home to Philadelphia from Canton. Observations were largely of architecture and industry in London, Birmingham, Staffordshire, Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow, and Edinburgh. His postscript reflects on the differences between Americans and the British. Also of interest is a manuscript entitled "Tea and the Chinese" detailed notes on the differences between varieties of Chinese tea and its preservation. The section of "Miscellaneous Remarks" is entered between two passages on tea, and includes observations on the government, education, class structure, and personal appearance of the Chinese. Included are his drafts of the first pages of the memoirs, photocopies of letters and sermons of Hicks relating to the Hicksite Separation, abolition, and Quaker spirituality. Also included are a typescript copy of Samuel Johnson's letter to Edward Hicks on slavery, the original of Hicks' responses, and a letter from Isaac Parry to Benjamin Ferris after the death of Edward Hicks concerning the publication of the memoirs.

Marion L. Bonner Smith papers, 1934-1960, 1963-1982 (bulk) 1807-1982 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The collection contains diaries, 1934-1982, of Marion Bonner Smith, a Quaker born in Southeastern Pennsylvania. She married Newlin R. Smith, a Tufts University professor, in 1937. Eight small 5-year diaries with daily entries which record activities such as attending Quaker meetings, committees, family events, chores and some national news. Also included are Bonner and Smith family photographs and a small number of family letters, miscellaneous memorabilia, and genealogical information.

Clendenon Family Papers, 1789-1975 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The collection contains correspondence, journals, and other papers of the Robert and Elizabeth Clendenon family who served as Quaker missionaries to the Native Americans in Tunesassa, Cattaraugus County, New York, in 1812-1816 and were early settlers of Ceres, McKean County, Pennsylvania. Of special note are the diary and correspondence of Robert Clendenon. The bulk of the correspondence was received by Lydia Clendenon Chevalier and includes two letters dictated by Jacob Johnson, a member of the Seneca tribe whom she met at Tunesassa. Other letters provide insight into the lives of her unmarried sisters who struggled to make a living as teachers. The letters mention family events, Quaker and anti-slavery concerns. Also included are research material and writing compiled by Dorothy Godfrey Wayman in preparation for her articles on the Clendenon and Chevalier families.
