Miller-Dickey Family papers, 1786-1992 (inclusive)

Abstract:
This collection consists of papers of the Cross, Dickey, and Miller families of Chester County, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Baltimore, Maryland. John Miller and his wife, Margaret, emigrated from Scotland to Pennsylvania with their young daughter, Jane, in 1786. Miller, who was trained as a stone cutter in Scotland, developed a thriving marble business in Philadelphia; he also owned a farm in Great Valley, Pennsylvania. John was active in the Philadelphia community; he was an early member of the Pennsylvania Abolitionist Society, and a supporter of the Magdalene and Missionary Societies. The papers in this collection consist primarily of personal correspondence, business records, genealogical notes, diaries, and family photographs, of the Cross, Dickey and Miller families. Abstract:
John Barry (1745-1803), often credited as the Father of the American Navy, served the Continental Navy and the United States Navy for seventeen years. He and his descendents, particularly his nephew Patrick Hayes and grand-nephew Patrick Barry Hayes, became prominent members of Philadelphia society, serving as seamen, merchants, businessmen and politicians. The Barry-Hayes papers are the business, political and personal papers of John Barry and of his family, especially Patrick Hayes and Patrick Barry Hayes. The collection includes correspondence, letterbooks, diaries, logbooks, legal and financial papers related to Barry’s career in the Navy, the business ventures of the Hayes, Keen and Somers families, and their personal lives.

Lewis-Fussell Family Papers, 1698-1978 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Bartholomew Fussell was a Quaker minister who married Rebecca Bond at Abington Monthly Meeting in Pennsylvania in 1781. He was a member of Uwchlan Monthly Meeting of Friends at his death in 1838. The couple had eight children, viz. Esther, William, Sarah, Joseph, Jacob, Bartholomew, Rebecca, and Solomon. Esther married John Lewis in 1818, and they had four children, among whom was Graceanna Lewis, Quaker scientist and humanitarian. Joseph Fussell married Elizabeth Moore in 1814, and their eldest son, Henry Bartholomew, married Maria Lewis. Rebecca Fussell married Joseph Trimble in 1837, and their only daughter, Esther Jane, married Isaac Lippincott. The collection contains correspondence, journals, other writings, account books, albums, photographs, and miscellaneous notes of members of the Lewis and Fussell families of Chester and Delaware Counties in Pennsylvania. J. Wilmer Lundy Family Papers, 1781-1964 (inclusive)

Abstract:
J. Wilmer Lundy (1869-1966), Quaker businessman and writer, was the son of Joseph and Mary Evans Lundy of Rancocas, New Jersey. He graduated from Trenton Business College in 1889 and in 1900 formed a partnership with Elmer J. Shinn. In 1895 he married Bessie Morris Roberts, daughter of Stacy and Harriet Roberts. They had one daughter, Elizabeth, who married an Indian businessman and took the name Kamela Nimbkar. J. Wilmer Lundy died in Newtown in 1966 at the age of 97. The collection contains genealogical files, correspondence, speeches and writings, business, financial, and legal records, pictures, and other memorabilia of J. Wilmer Lundy and other members of the Lundy family of New Jersey.

Abstract:
The Lupton family was a Quaker family from Hopewell, Virginia. David Lupton, the son of Joseph and Rachel Lupton, married Mary Hollingsworth at Hopewell Monthly Meeting of Friends in 1777. They had nine children, including a son, Joel, who married Sarah Haines. Joel, and to a lesser extent his brother, Lewis, was known as an inventor who was credited with a number of mechanical improvements to farm machinery. Another brother, Nathan, was involved with his father in the operation of a mill on Babb's Run. Jonah H. Lupton married twice, first to Martha Ann Sidwell, who died in 1836, and second to Lydia Walker. The collection contains correspondence, journals, business papers, pictures and other memorabilia, and miscellaneous materials of the Lupton and related families of Hopewell Monthly Meeting of Friends in Virginia. Abstract:
Charles Smith Ogden (1822-1904) was a Quaker businessman, genealogist, and civic leader. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, educated in Friends' schools, and married Emma Corbit in 1848. He worked as a wholesale druggist before the Civil War, was active on the committee to elect Abraham Lincoln, and served as Consul to Quebec, Canada, 1860-1864. In 1886, he began a tour around the world, which is recounted in his travel letters, 1886-1891. This collection contains genealogical material, family correspondence, scrapbooks and memorabilia. Of particular interest are letters collected by Charles S. Smith from prominent Quaker correspondents including Elias and Edward Hicks, Lucretia Mott, Benjamin Ferris, and John Comly.

Abstract:
The Collins family was a Quaker family of New England and New York City. Abel Collins (1770-1834) was a birthright Quaker and a minister recorded by Hopkinton Monthly Meeting. He married Mary A. Wilbur (d. 1858) of Hopkinton in 1790, and they had eight children. One of their sons, Abel Francis Collins, was clerk of South Kingston Monthly Meeting. He had three sons who attended Friends Boarding School in Providence, Rhode Island, and continued their studies at Brown University. The collection contains extensive family correspondence (1812-1903) which covers a variety of topics, including schools and education, Quaker concerns, topical events of the day, and family life; journals of Francis W. Collins, including descriptions of his student days at Friends Boarding School in Providence; family business and financial papers; miscellaneous papers, photographs, and genealogical material on the Collins and Burdick families.

Clendenon Family Papers, 1789-1975 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The collection contains correspondence, journals, and other papers of the Robert and Elizabeth Clendenon family who served as Quaker missionaries to the Native Americans in Tunesassa, Cattaraugus County, New York, in 1812-1816 and were early settlers of Ceres, McKean County, Pennsylvania. Of special note are the diary and correspondence of Robert Clendenon. The bulk of the correspondence was received by Lydia Clendenon Chevalier and includes two letters dictated by Jacob Johnson, a member of the Seneca tribe whom she met at Tunesassa. Other letters provide insight into the lives of her unmarried sisters who struggled to make a living as teachers. The letters mention family events, Quaker and anti-slavery concerns. Also included are research material and writing compiled by Dorothy Godfrey Wayman in preparation for her articles on the Clendenon and Chevalier families.

Robert H. Gere (1859-1928) was a senior partner at Gere & Church law firm and an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Syracuse, NY. He graduated from Syracuse University in 1883 with a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy and from Syracuse University Law School in 1898. Before beginning his law career, Gere spent thirteen years working as a news reporter. He married Harriet Sexsmith Gere in 1893 and together they had a daughter, Katharine. This collection contains materials dating between 1752 and 1883 and includes two diaries belonging to Robert H. Gere; a book entitled "Genealogy of the Geer Family," in which the lines of George and Thomas Geer are traced from 1621 to 1856; a single leaf from a math copybook that includes a note in pencil dating it to 1752; an oversize copy of The Luzerne Federalist; and the Susquehanna Intelligencer (a local periodical); and an unused travel accounts book.

This collection consists of material relating to the Hall and Hallam families in the Leicester area of England, dating from 1785 to 1818. The families appear to have farmed, but they also appear to have been extremely religious, serving as lay preachers and religious leaders for the surrounding communities. The collection contains a recipe book for inks and sealing wax, a commonplace book, a survey for Alton Grange Farm, a diary, and a sermon or speech. While several items are specifically tied to these two families, the other material is assumed to be connected to family members. There is only superficial documentation of any member of the family, but collectively, there is a sense of religious faith crossing generations.

The Read family consistently played an important role in American government and politics from the time that George Read, a Delaware resident, signed the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Throughout the 17th to 19th centuries, the Reads served as lawyers, judges, politicians, generals, consul-generals and foreign ministers. This collection contains the papers of four generations of the Read family of Philadelphia, consisting of John Read, Judge John Meredith Read, General John Meredith Read, and Harmon Pumpelly Read. The materials date from 1736 to 1896, with the bulk dating from 1792 to 1896, and include extensive correspondence, bills and receipts, genealogical notes, legal documents, newspaper clippings, photographs, scrapbooks and ephemera. The Rush Family papers includes material from Benjamin Rush, physician, social activist, educator, writer and patriot; his brother Jacob Rush, lawyer, Supreme Court judge, and patriot; and Benjamin’s son James Rush, physician and Treasurer of the United States Mint. These American men were “strong characters, zealous patriots during the stirring period in which they lived, tenacious of their convictions and of the high standard of individual duty which they set for others, and typified in themselves,” (Richards, page 53). The bulk of the collection is the papers of Dr. Benjamin Rush and his son Dr. James Rush. Judge Jacob, John, Richard and William are represented, but to a much lesser degree. Abstract:
Daniel Kent, emigrated to Chester County, Pa. from Ireland, in 1785. He joined the Society of Friends (Quakers) in 1790, and married Esther Hawley in 1791. Their great-grandson Henry Simmons Kent (1833-1906) was active in the establishment of Swarthmore Monthly Meeting and the Borough of Swarthmore, Pennsylvania. The collection includes material used by Daniels' great-granddaughter Ella Kent Barnard in preparation for the writing of three books. Among these materials are genealogical charts and data, research correspondence, and original letters and documents. Notable among the latter is the correspondence between Daniel Kent and his parents, William and Ann Kent. Collection also includes diaries and journals. A manuscript entitled "The Rise of Swarthmore," by Isabella Tyson, describes the meeting of Friends in the home of her parents to discuss plans for the establishment of the College.

Hannah M. (Hannah Moore) Levick Family Papers, 1766-1896 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Hannah M. Levick was a Hicksite Quaker, the daughter of Richard and Sara Moore of Richmond in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and a granddaughter of Theophilus and Hannah Foulke. In 1843 she married William M. Levick of Philadelphia, and they became members of Green Street Monthly Meeting. Her husband was employed as a conveyancer in Philadelphia, and Hannah wrote a number of articles for Quaker publications. The collection includes correspondence of Theophilus and Hannah Foulke, 1794-1796, and a copy of a letter written by Emmor Kimber concerning an escaped slave, Henry Franklin. Also includes travel journals of William M. and Hannah M. Levick (1844, 1852-53, 1866), poetry by Hannah M. Levick, genealogical material concerning the Moore, Lloyd, Lester, Foulke, and related families, as well as a small amount of miscellaneous material.

The Swayne family were Quakers of southern Chester County, Pennsylvania. Caleb Swayne was a farmer and tanner, and his son, Benjamin, also operated a tan yard and conducted a school for boys, the London Grove Boarding School. Evan Thomas Swayne also taught at London Grove, but moved to the Eaton Institute, a boarding school for girls in Kennett, after 1865. His son, Edward Swayne, had a greenhouse business and wrote poetry. Edward's sister, Anna Belle, was a photographer before her marriage to Albert Taylor Jackson. Edward's son, Norman Walton Swayne, attended Swarthmore College and then taught at the George School; he was also the family genealogist. Abstract:
The Speer Family papers represent four generations of that family, with the bulk of material attributed to the last two generations, especially Robert Elliott Speer and his wife and three of his five children: Emma Bailey, Elliott, Margaret Bailey, and William Speer. The family was active in the Presbyterian Church, serving that institution in a variety of different capacities. The children, in addition to their religious roles, held prominent positions in academic administration. The family's papers primarily consist of the personal papers of the family, although they also contain the professional correspondence of Emma Bailey and Margaret Bailey Speer, both Bryn Mawr College alumnae. This collection, which dates from 1802 to 1982, contains letters, diaries, speeches, publications, awards, and photographs, although the vast majority of the material is the letters between family members.

Abstract:
The Logan family was a prominent Philadelphia family dating back to 1699, when James Logan, the family patriarch, arrived in Philadelphia to serve as the first secretary of the Pennsylvania colony. Through work in agriculture and politics, Logan and his descendants were intimately involved in the development of the Pennsylvania colony and, later, the fledging United States. James Logan's prominence resulted in connections, both professional and familial, with other prominent colonial families, including the Norris and Dickinson families. This collection spans more than two centuries and includes most notably members of the Allinson and Taylor families. Abstract:
The Reinhardt, Hawley, Hewes and Meredith families are tied together through marriage and their Quaker faith across multiple generations. William Dell Reinhardt, a University of Pennsylvania graduate and doctor, married Rebecca Hawley, a teacher. They had six children: Jesse Hawley Reinhardt, Mary Bailey Reinhardt, Esther Meredith Reinhardt, Lydia Ludwig Reinhardt, Elizabeth Christina Reinhardt, and David Jones Reinhardt. David Jones Reinhardt married Anna Margaret Hewes in 1896. These individuals created the bulk of the material contained within this collection. The Moore family arrived in Philadelphia in the early nineteenth century and opened a wire company in the city. The Alfred Fitler Moore Family Papers consist of correspondence, diaries, financial material, photographs, and artifacts of Joseph and Cecelia (Fitler) Moore; their children William Joseph, Jr, and Alfred; as well as Cecelia's father and brother Alfred Fitler and Alfred Fitler, Jr. The bulk of the collection relates to Alfred Fitler Moore, benefactor of the Alfred Fitler Moore School of Electrical Engineering.
