Vaux Family papers, 1708-1995 (inclusive) 1912-1932 (bulk)

Abstract:
The Vaux family was deeply involved with Quaker and Native American affairs throughout much of the 19th and early 20th centuries. George Vaux, Sr. was involved in Quaker activity through the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting and other Quaker meetings throughout the world (including Antigua and London). Both George Vaux, Jr. and Mary Morris Vaux Walcott, his sister, served as commissioners for the U.S. Board of Indian Commissioners. This organization was established by the United States Congress in 1869 to watch over federal policies regarding Native Americans and to make certain that treaty obligations were fulfilled, especially in reference to supply deliveries. George Vaux, III also worked as the treasurer of the Indian Committee of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting. Sarah Cooper Tatum Hilles family papers, 1840-1882 1791-1930 (inclusive) 1840-1882 (bulk)

Abstract:
The Sarah Cooper Tatum Hilles family papers house the correspondence of a Quaker family who lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Woodbury, New Jersey; Wilmington, Delaware; and other surrounding areas from approximately 1840 to 1882. A majority of the letters were written to or by Sarah Cooper Tatum Hilles; her husband, John Smith Hilles; and other Tatum or Hilles family members. There is a small sampling of assorted family papers, dating from 1825 to 1901. Included, among other items, are school report cards of William Samuel Hilles from Haverford College and an 1834 memoir of Anne Cooper Tatum, Sarah Hilles' mother. In addition, there are deeds to properties owned by the Hilles family in Delaware, New Jersey, Illinois and Pennsylvania from 1791 to 1886.

Reinhardt, Hawley and Hewes family papers, 1762-1955 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Reinhardt, Hawley, Hewes and Meredith families are tied together through marriage and their Quaker faith across multiple generations. William Dell Reinhardt, a University of Pennsylvania graduate and doctor, married Rebecca Hawley, a teacher. They had six children: Jesse Hawley Reinhardt, Mary Bailey Reinhardt, Esther Meredith Reinhardt, Lydia Ludwig Reinhardt, Elizabeth Christina Reinhardt, and David Jones Reinhardt. David Jones Reinhardt married Anna Margaret Hewes in 1896. These individuals created the bulk of the material contained within this collection. The commonplace book of Rebecca Jones includes extracts from H.F.'s manuscript, Samuel Fothergill's remarks upon Cornelius Cayley's application to Friends of Leed's Meeting, the manuscript found among the papers of Thomas Wilson, a sermon preached by Luke Cock at York, the Vision of William Bayley, and the Quaker testimonies of Samuel Fothergill and Rachel Wilson. Abstract:
This collection is comprised of the single handwritten letterbook of Benjamin Smith. The volume contains personal correspondence, primarily addressed to Smith's father, Daniel, in Burlington, New Jersey, between August 25 and October 17, 1793, and believed to have been copied by a family member in Burlington, New Jersey. Topics covered in Smith's correspondence relate primarily to the ongoing yellow fever epidemic of 1793, with particular focus on the health of Smith's family members. Also included within the collection are copies of letters from Smith's brother, Joshua Smith, addressed to their father, relating the events of the summer and the eventual death of Benjamin from yellow fever on October 18, 1793.

Letters of John Ewer, located in London, to Owen Biddle (1737-1799), located in Philadelphia. Ewer was supplying Biddle, a Philadelphian merchant, with fabric of various kinds and patterns. Most of the letters deal with the shipping of this merchandise to Biddle and its payment. There are references to the increasing difficulties between Great Britain and the British colonies that would become the United States in Ewer's letters of 1775-1776.

Hoskins family letterbook, 1729-1864 (inclusive)

Abstract:
This collection is comprised of the single volume letterbook of the Hoskins family. The primary correspondents in the volume are members of the Hoskins family, though quite a number of the letters are directed to Benjamin H. Warder. Most of the letters were written in the 18th century, but some are from the 19th century. A number of them are religious in nature, while others deal with service in the ministry or visiting Friends, and some deal with states of health and mortality. The letters cover a broad range of topics, including, but not limited to Quakers and trade in Barbados, outbreaks of small pox, the opening of Native American schools, and the Orthodox-Hicksite separation. Some prominent letter writers include: Martha Allinson, George Dillwyn, Thomas Evans, Rebecca Jones, James Mott, Elizabeth Robson, Charity Rotch, John Warder, Nicholas Waln, and Daniel Wheeler.

Quakers Exiled in Virginia collection, 1777-1778 (inclusive)

Abstract:
This collection is comprised of the two folders of materials related to a group of Quakers exiled in Virigina during the American Revolutionary War, from 1777 to 1778. The collection includes originals, photocopies, and transcripts of the materials. The materials are largely composed of correspondence, but also include decisions made by Congress, financial records of the exiles, and a single photograph of the Isaac Brown house, where Quaker exiles were held in Virginia in 1777. Includes a letter from John Hancock, 1777. The collection also includes a partial index of the materials.
