Howard Haines Turner (1909-1996) was a Quaker economist and educator who was active in a variety of social concerns, particularly in improving the justice system. The Swarthmore College Dean's Office records, circa 1871-2005, include correspondence files, meeting minutes, reports, clippings from the student newspaper ("The Phoenix") and other publications, and other documents pertaining to student life on campus and administrative matters with which past Deans have been involved. In the early years of Swarthmore College, applicants applied directly to the College President and the cost of attendance was $350 per year. In the 21st century, a separately staffed Admissions Office and an Office of Financial Aid exist to support these functions. This small collection, dating from 1869 to 2003, includes admissions blanks, lists of applicants, reports, and other materials that document Swarthmore's admissions and financial aid policies and procedures.

This collection consists of records of the New Presidential Nominating Committee for the 11th President of Swarthmore College, 1972-1973, and the Presidential Nominating Committee for the 12th President of Swarthmore College, 1981-1982, as well as records from hiring several other executive office positions: Dean of Students, Dean of the College, Assistant to the President, and Vice President of Finance. The files do not contain personal information about specific candidates. They do contain records about committee formation and procedures, job descriptions, templates for correspondence with candidates, committee meeting minutes and correspondence, and other papers.

Swarthmore College Alumni Records and Surveys, 1894-1980 (inclusive)

Abstract:
This series contains Alumni Records Office procedures documents as well as alumni surveys conducted by the College and various committees. Arthur Beardsley's 1894 survey of alumni was used as the basis for The Alumni Historical Catalogue, 1873-1892. A survey conducted by an alumni group, The Garnet Band, was used gain support for the resumption of Swarthmore-Haverford football and the weekly publication of the Phoenix. After World War I, the Dean's Office conducted a survey of the military experience of men students. Collection also contains procedures documents and computing instructions for the Alumni Records Office in the 1970s.
