Overview and metadata sections

Robert D. Cross became the 10th president of Swarthmore College in the fall of 1969. However, Cross found that he didn't enjoy the pressures of college administration and announced his resignation effective the end 1971. In 1972, the Board of Managers established a New Presidential Nominating Committee (NPNC) composed of five members of the Board (including the Chairman), three faculty members, and three students. They also retained the services of an outside firm, SGL Industries, Inc., to assist with the search. These efforts culminated in the hiring of Theodore W. Friend as the 11th President of Swarthmore College, 1973-1982. A Presidential Search Committee, also composed of five Board members, three faculty members, and three students, convened in 1981. They worked with the executive search firm Canny, Bowen, Howard, Pack & Associates. The successful candidate of this process, David W. Fraser, served as 12th President of Swarthmore College from 1982 to 1991.

This collection consists of records of the New Presidential Nominating Committee for the 11th President of Swarthmore College, 1972-1973, and the Presidential Nominating Committee for the 12th President of Swarthmore College, 1981-1982, as well as records from hiring several other executive office positions: Dean of Students, circa 1974; Dean of the College, circa 1980; Assistant to the President, circa 1980; and Vice President of Finance, 1982. The files do not contain resumes, interview notes, or other personal information about specific candidates. They do contain records about committee formation and procedures, job descriptions, templates for correspondence with candidates, committee meeting minutes and correspondence, and other papers.
