Friends Freedmen's Association Records, 1863-1982 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Friends' Freedmen's Association was an organization of Philadelphia Quakers founded in 1863 as Friends' Association of Philadelphia and Its Vicinity, for the Relief of Colored Freemen. Its purpose was to provide relief and education to formerly enslaved people during and after the Civil War. The name was changed circa 1873. From 1947-1955 the Association supported black students in schools and summer work camps. From 1955-1970 the income from investments was used to provide grants for scholarship to needy black students. From 1970 income and principal was distributed yearly primarily among Bryn Mawr, Earlham, Guilford, and Haverford Colleges. In January 1982 the Association was dissolved. The funds were distributed among the four colleges named above to be used as aid to black students as the J. Henry Scattergood Scholarship Fund. Bryn Mawr College photo archives inventory, 1885-2000s

Abstract:
The Photo Archives comprises photographs, slides, transparencies, and negatives depicting the history of Bryn Mawr College from 1885 to the early 2000s. The majority of prints are in black-and-white, though there are a few in color from the late 1960s through the 1980s. Older prints range from carte-de-visite, cabinet cards, cyanotypes and some other early photomechanical processes. Photos are organized in three sub-collections: People; Buildings and Campus; and Events and Groups. The sub-collection People contains photos of notable and miscellaneous persons from the College. The Buildings group includes images of past and current campus buildings, including exterior and interior views. The Events and Groups sub-collection comprises events, campus happenings, and student life. There are also portraits of early alumnae, yearbook photographs, Bi-Co news photographs, and images from the Summer School of Women Workers in Industry (SSWWI). Bryn Mawr College Scrapbook and Photo Album Collection, 1885-1955 (inclusive)

Abstract:
This collection consists of a large number of scrapbooks assembled by Bryn Mawr College Alumnae, focusing on their years at Bryn Mawr College. The alumnae represented graduated at various times between 1891 and 1950. The vast majority of the scrapbooks come from the earlier years of Bryn Mawr College. There is huge variety among items in this collection. Some scrapbooks contain a great deal of material while others are sparse. Some provide commentary on the items, ranging from simple labels to diary-length entries. Most contain personal memorabilia such as letters and cards, as well as Bryn Mawr College-related materials. These include programs, photographs, newspaper clippings, souvenirs from dances and dinners, and college traditions material. Poems, drawings, and notes from friends give a distinctive perspective into the daily life at Bryn Mawr College. Mildred Fairchild Woodbury was a noted labor economist and educator. Her collection contains materials from 1894-1975 and includes a variety of materials related to the Department of Social Work and Social Research at Bryn Mawr College, the American Association of University Women Philadelphia, the YWCA, the Pennsylvania Advisory Committee for Public Assistance, and the Southeast Regional Planning Council, the Pennsylvania Criminal Justice Planning Board, and some personal materials.

Abstract:
The Deanery was the home of the first Dean and second President of Bryn Mawr College, M. Carey Thomas, from 1885 to 1933. From 1933 until 1968, when the building was demolished for the construction of Canaday Library, the building served as the college's Alumnae Center and Inn. The collection is comprised primarily of Deanery records, mostly inventories of the building, and the files of Carol Campbell, Curator of Art and Artifacts in Bryn Mawr College's Special Collections

Ellen Sudders Young scrapbook, scrapbook: 1922-1930 photo album: 1924-1926 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Ellen Sudders Young was a member of the class of 1926. She graduated from Bryn Mawr with degrees in mathematics and physics. From 1926-43, she worked in the Sterility Testing Department of the Biological Laboratories of Sharp and Dohme. Following this, she served as a Department Head at Reichel Laboratory from 1944-46. Young also served as a missionary at the Scripture Memory Mountain Mission in Emmalena. Kentucky. Young's papers houses her scrapbook and photo album. The scrapbook contains materials from 1922-1930 and largely consists of newspaper articles. The photo album contains photos from circa 1924-1926.
