Henry P. McIlhenny Papers, 1817-1824, 1902-1988, undated (bulk 1934-1986) (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Henry P. McIlhenny Papers document the privileged and urbane lifestyle of the man whose tastes and talents earned him a reputation as a distinguished connoisseur of art and antiques, world traveler, host extraordinaire, philanthropist and generous friend. Although Henry McIlhenny (1910-1986) is the primary creator, this collection is very much a family affair, encompassing the art collections initiated by his parents, John D. and Frances P. McIlhenny, which passed, along with the family trust fund, on to McIlhenny and his sister Bernice ("Bonnnie") Wintersteen. Much of the material deals with McIlhenny's activities from the mid-1930s to his final years, with particularly extensive documentation of his art collection and of his homes, the latter of which encompasses his penchant for interior design and his passion for horticulture. Abstract:
From 1925 to 1955, Fiske Kimball served as director of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, steering the institution from what he described as "a minor provincial position to become one of the leading museums of Americirca" The Fiske Kimball Records document Kimball's efforts in achieving this transformation in collaboration with the Museum's officers, staff, and the Fairmount Park Commission, and with the assistance of private benefactors and City funding. Comprised primarily of correspondence, these records also include ephemera, clippings, notes, legal documents, reports, minutes, press releases, publications, floor plans, installation drawings, and photographs, mostly of objects, rooms and architectural elements offered for purchase. Abstract:
Art to Anne d'Harnoncourt (1943-2008) was both a professional and personal passion. Best recognized for her twenty-five year tenure as director of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, d'Harnoncourt collaborated with local, national and international people and organizations, to keep art--and all the arts--relevant and essential in building and bridging communities. Most of the material comprising the Anne d'Harnoncourt Papers traces her professional development in and away from the Museum and consists primarily of correspondence, press clippings, photographs of works of art and events, draft lectures, notes, ephemera and a number of certificates, citations and object awards. Several files of photos and papers pertain to her husband and Museum colleague, Joseph J. Rishel. Family papers and photographs and school records comprise her personal papers. Abstract:
Consists of 15 boxes of Albert Croll Baugh's professional papers, including correspondence, research materials, a catalog of the book collection he donated to the University of Pennsylvania libraries, and reproductions of various medieval manuscripts. The correspondence is professional and overwhelmingly relates to Baugh's research. The research materials consist primarily of notes, unpublished article reviews, reprints of articles, and newspaper clippings, and make up the greater bulk of the collection. These materials cover Middle English, French and Anglo-Latin literature and literary history in the twelfth through sixteenth centuries. Specific topics covered in the research materials include Arthurian legends, Chaucer, Middle English language (including spelling, grammar and punctuation) and literature (especially romances, plays and lyric works), Piers Plowman, and the concept of the table dormant, as well as the teaching of English and the editing of medieval texts. Eliot Stellar, a noted physiological psychologist, was a professor in the Department of Anatomy at the University of Pennsylvania from 1960 – 1993, and provost from 1973 – 1978. He was also active in many professional societies, including the American Philosophical Society. The Eliot Stellar Papers, 1938-1993, document the professional activities of Dr. Stellar -- his teaching, research, his administrative duties at the University of Pennsylvania, as well as his responsibilities with other organizations outside the University.

Eleanor Corkhill Adams Addison married William Henry Fitzgerald Addison who came to the University of Pennsylvania in 1905 when he was appointed as a Demonstrator of Normal Histology. Shortly after he received his M.D. from the University in 1917, he was became a full Professor of Normal Histology and Embryology in the School of Medicine. This diary kept by Eleanor Corkhill Adams Addison (faculty wife) from December 31, 1939 to May 21, 1944. It provides an intimate account of a wide range of faculty and campus life during the Second World War.

William Ezra Lingelbach was a well-known and highly regarded figure at the University of Pennsylvania as a faculty member of the Department of History. He earned his Ph.D. in modern European history from the University of Pennsylvania in 1901. He would eventually rise to Professor of Modern European History, and briefly serve as the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. The William Ezra Lingelbach Papers mostly date from his time as a faculty member at the University of Pennsylvania, although materials from Lingelbach's involvement with other institutions and organizations are also represented.

Thomas Sovereign Gates, Sr. (1873-1948), a Philadelphia native and University of Pennsylvania alumnus, served as the first president of the University of Pennsylvania from 1930 to 1944. The collections consists of 36 volumes of scrapbooks containing newspaper clippings, programs, and ephemera, largely dating from the years immediately preceding Gates' presidency at the University of Pennsylvania through his death in 1948.

Andrew H. Woods papers, 1885-1956 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Andrew H. Woods (1872 – 1956) became vice president of Canton College in Guangzhou, China in 1899. He maintained his association with Canton Christian College throughout the Boxer Rebellion, or Yihetuan Movement, and the end of the Qing dynasty. Woods moved back and forth between China and the United States with his wife, Fanny Sinclair, who graduated from Bryn Mawr in 1901. In 1929, the couple and their children settled in Iowa. In Iowa, Woods worked as a professor and practitioner of neurology and psychology. Andrew H. Woods' papers include diaries which describe his personal life and professional life in China and in the United States, photographs and postcards, much of Agnes Sinclair's personal correspondence, his articles, and various papers.

Alfred Bendiner Papers, 1921-1970 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Alfred Bendiner received both a bachelor of architecture degree in 1922 and a master's degree in 1927 from the University of Pennsylvania. In 1937, when he accompanied the University Museum's archeological expedition to Tepe Gawra and Khafaji, Iraq, Bendiner's task was to draw architectural blueprints of these sites. He was also architect to the university's Tikal-Tikal archeological expedition to Guatamala in 1960. These papers include Alfred Bendiner's published articles and his drawings (originals and reproductions) done for publications by his class and by the University of Pennsylvania.
