Henry Joel Cadbury papers, 1965-1971 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Henry Joel Cadbury graduated from Haverford College (A.B. 1903) and Harvard University (M.A. 1904 and Ph.D. 1914). Cadbury served as a trustee and director of Bryn Mawr College for many years and was Chairman for the Board of Directors from 1956 to 1969. He was one of the foudners of the American Friends Service Committee in 1917 and Chairman of that organization 1928-34, 1944-60. AFSC won the Nobel Peace Prize along with Britain's Service Council in 1947. The Henry Joel Cadbury papers holds the papers of the AFSC Family Planning and Population Education Committee relating to a special report being prepared for publication on the subject of abortion. The collection, which is from around 1965-1971, sheds light on the Quaker opinion on abortion, contraceptives, and sex education during the late 1960s-early 1970s.

Elizabeth Miller Caldwell letters, 1894-11-14-1897-04-04 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Elizabeth Miller Caldwell (1874-1945) was a member fo the Class of 1897 who took her A.B. in English and Latin. She lived in Merion Hall during her first three years at Bryn Mawr and then moved into Pembroke West for her senior year. Originally from Pittsburgh, she studied at Miss Baldwin's School in Bryn Mawr prior to enrolling at BMC. She married Gerard Fountain in 1898 and later sent her two daughters to Bryn Mawr College (Audrey Fountain, A.B. 1922, and Olivia Caldwell Fountain, A.B. 1924). The Letters of Elizabeth Miller Caldwell comprise a collection of eight letters written by Elizabeth Caldwell to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Caldwell. The letters span from November 14, 1894 to April 4, 1897, and discuss a wide range of topics, from student protests to SGA meetings.

Mary Whitall Worthington papers, 1906-1911 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Mary Whitall Worthington was a 1910 graduate of Bryn Mawr College and the president of the Bryn Mawr chapter of the Woman's Equal Suffrage League. She was the niece of Bryn Mawr president M. Carey Thomas, being the daughter of Thomas's sister, Grace Thomas Worthington. She grew up with her mother in England, after her parents' divorce in 1896, and returned to England during the summers while she was in college. Worthington was an ardent suffragist who met with several prominent suffragists of the day, including Anna Howard Shaw. After graduation, she attended the Johns Hopkins Medical School, but died as the result of congenital heart failure in January 1912. The Mary Whitall Worthington papers houses Worthington's personal papers and diaries. Her diaries, which cover April 1907 to November 1911, describe her time at Bryn Mawr College from late in her first year to her graduation, and then during her first year of medical school at Johns Hopkins University.

Susan FitzGerald papers, 1926-1954 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Susan FitzGerald was a member of the Bryn Mawr class of 1929, the daughter of Susan Walker FitzGerald, who founded the Self-Government Association. Susan FitzGerald taught Spanish and German from 1930-1945 before becoming involved with the United States Information Agency. She worked all over the world as the director of English language programs and teaching English. FitzGerald retired in 1972. The Susan FitzGerald papers house the personal papers of Susan FitzGerald. The collection, which spans 1926 to 1954, is comprised of correspondence and USIA (United States Information Agency) printed material.

Abstract:
Elizabeth Congdon graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 1902. She was a passionate horticulturalist and directed Food Conservation and Victory Garden efforts in Alleghany County, Pennsylvania during both world wars. The Elizabeth Congdon scrapbook collection houses Congdon's two scrapbooks. The scrapbooks, which cover 1898-1901 and 1901-1902 respectively, document Congdon's social life at Bryn Mawr, as well as many off-campus events.

Elizabeth Anna Harlan graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 1909 with a major in English. After graduation, she acted as the president of the Visiting Nurses Association of Coatesville. She served 25 years as a board member of Coatesville Hospital. She was also highly involved with the Coatesville Presbyterian Church throughout her life. She had one adopted daughter. Harlan died in 1972. The Elizabeth Anna Harlan scrapbook houses the scrapbook and some other ephemera of Harlan's. The collection ranges from 1904-1909.

Abstract:
Jeannie Colston Howard was born in Richmond, Virginia on December 23, 1878. She attended Bryn Mawr College, graduating in 1901. After graduation, she taught at Shipley School and St. Margaret's. From 1905-1918, she was a teacher and then principal at Stuart Hall. Howard later pursued her masters in Latin at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1926. She was a member of Colonial Dames. Howard passed away in 1968. The Jeannie Colston Howard scrapbook contains Howard's one volume scrapbook. The scrapbook covers Howard's years at Bryn Mawr, from 1897 to 1901, and contains mostly personal correspondence, calling cards and invitations.

Mary Kilpatrick was born in 1879. She was a member of the class of 1900 who lived in Pembroke East. She received her AB degree in French, Spanish, and Italian (Languages). She had a lifelong interest in the arts. Kilpatrick died April 1, 1964. The Mary Grace Kilpatrick scrapbook houses Kilpatrick's one volume diary/scrapbook. The scrapbook spans Kilpatrick's freshman-junior years at Bryn Mawr, from 1897-1899, and highlights all aspects of college life.

Elsie Kohn Rauh scrapbook, 1901-1902 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Elsie Kohn was born November 25, 1881. She attended Bryn Mawr College, graduating in 1904. She married Aaron S. Rauh in 1908 and had three children. Kohn was a civic leader who was extremely involved in the women's suffrage movement. She was one of the founders of the League of Women Voters and was also active in Planned Parenthood. Kohn died March 27th, 1972. The Elsie Kohn Rauh scrapbook contains Kohn's one volume scrapbook from her first two years at Bryn Mawr, 1900-1902. Kohn left Bryn Mawr in 1902 to care for her mother, so in addition to the typical memorabilia, this scrapbook also contains letters from friends regarding her decision to leave.

Tirzah Nichols scrapbook, 1892-1902 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Tirzah Nichols attended the Friends' Central School in Philadelphia, as well as Miss Florence Baldwin's School in Bryn Mawr (now called The Baldwin School). She was a member of Bryn Mawr College's class of 1896, graduating with degrees in History and Political Science. After graduation, she returned to Miss Baldwin's School, this time as a science teacher (1896-1906). She later became a teacher of Culture of the Speaking Voice and a librarian at Miss Baldwin's School, which had then been renamed The Baldwin School (1906-1917). The Tirzah Nichols scrapbook contains Nichols' one volume scrapbook. The scrapbook spans the years from 1892 to 1902 and contains a lot of material, mostly musical programs and Bryn Mawr memorabilia. It provides useful insight into Bryn Mawr at the turn of the century.

Mildred Pressinger (Kienbusch) scrapbook, 1905-1909 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Mildred Pressinger (later Kienbusch) graduated from Bryn Mawr College with an A.B. in Philosophy and Psychology. She was a member of the Mayflower Descendants, the National Society of Colonial Dames, Founder and Patriots, and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was also active in a number of charities in New York City. She married Carl Otto von Kienbusch, the owner of an internationally celebrated collection of medieval arms and armor. Mildred Kienbusch died in 1968. The Mildred Pressinger scrapbook houses a very large one-volume scrapbook containing a great deal of material from Pressinger's four years at Bryn Mawr College (1905-1909). The scrapbook contains a large amount of Bryn Mawr memorabilia.

Mary Ayer (Rousmaniere) diary, 1897-1900 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Mary Ayer was a member of Bryn Mawr's class of 1901. While at college, Ayer was involved in varsity basketball, Mandolin and Banjo Club, and class plays. After graduating from Bryn Mawr, Ayer pursued graduated studies at Radcliffe (1901-1902) and Simmons College (1905-1906). In 1910, she married John Rousmaniere, a graduate of Harvard Law School. Ayer died in 1954. Ayer's one volume diary spans her freshman through junior years at college, from 1897-1900. However, only the first two of these were spent at Bryn Mawr; Ayer passed her junior year at Radcliffe College before returning to Bryn Mawr for her senior year. Ayer's diary offers insight into student athletics and academics, social life, and variations between Bryn Mawr and Radcliffe.

Marie A. Richards scrapbook, 1931-1936 (inclusive)

Marie A. Richards was born June 8, 1913. She was prepared at Gordon-Roney and Agnes Irwin, both in Philadelphia. She attended Bryn Mawr College, graduating in 1935. After graduation, she worked as Associate Editor for the American Philosophical Society until 1978. During that time she travelled all across the globe with her brother, attending geological conventions and sightseeing. She also worked as a laboratory assistant as Leeds and Northrup Company. After retiring, she moved to Philadelphia, where she volunteered with the Owl Book Shop. Richards died on April 7, 2009. The Marie Richards scrapbook contains Richards' one volume scrapbook. The scrapbook covers the years 1931 to 1936 and mainly consists of photographs and newspaper clippings.

Lydia Sharpless (Perry) scrapbook, 1903-1910 (inclusive)

Lydia Sharpless was born 1885, the daughter of Isaac Sharpless, then the president of Haverford College. She was prepared by Westtown Boarding School in Westtown, Pennsylvania and by private study. She attended Bryn Mawr College, graduating with the class of 1908 and holding the Foundation Scholarship from 1905-1908. While at school, she was highly involved in athletics, as the captain of the class hockey team and a member of the basketball and track teams, as well. After graduation, Sharpless worked part-time for a year in a Philadelphia settlement, then taught at Wykeham Rise, a girl's boarding school. She married Harvey C. Perry in 1911. Together they had 3 biological children, one of whom died young, and one adopted child. Sharpless died in 1932. The Lydia Sharpless Perry scrapbook contains Sharpless' one-volume scrapbook. The scrapbook contains material from 1903 to 1910 and contains the usual Bryn Mawr memorabilia, with an emphasis on hockey memorabilia.

Helen Rutgers Sturgis was born in 1883 in New York City. She was prepared by Miss Spence's School. She entered Bryn Mawr with the class of 1905 on the matriculation scholarship for New York, New Jersey, and Delaware. While at Bryn Mawr, she was the secretary of the Self-Government Association and studied Languages (French, Italian, Spanish). After graduation, she worked as a magazine editor. Sturgis died on March 16, 1966. The Helen Rutgers Sturgis scrapbook contains Sturgis' one-volume scrapbook. The scrapbook, which covers Sturgis' first two years at Bryn Mawr (1901-1903), mostly contains personal memorabilia.

Edith Wetherill (Ives) scrapbook, 1888-1934 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Edith Wetherill was a member of the Bryn Mawr Class of 1892. She was one of the founders of the Civic Club in Philadelphia, which was one of the first organizations of its kind in the country. She was an active volunteer, working with the Bellevue Hospital, the Unitarian Church, the Red Cross, and the Civilian Defense Volunteer Office. Her scrapbook houses Wetherill's one volume scrapbook. The scrapbook is very large and contains materials from 1888-1934, both well before and after Wetherill attended Bryn Mawr. The scrapbook primarily consists of photographs and newspaper clippings, giving a very comprehensive vision of Bryn Mawr from the 1890s well into the 1900s.

Michi Kawai was one of the first recipients of the Japanese Scholarship, graduating from Bryn Mawr in 1904 with high honors. She was an important figure in international Christian relationships and women's education in Japan. She was instrumental in founding the YWCA in Japan and later started Keisen School, which would become an important horticultural school for women. This collection consists largely of incoming correspondence to Esther Sinn Neuendorffer, a former classmate and friend of Kawai's, and materials concerning the Keisen School.

This collection contains papers related to Jane Martin's personal, professional, and academic life (c. 1968-2008). Martin held a PhD in African History, and focused most of her life and career around Liberia. Her life as an academic and professional who lived and worked in both Africa and the US often intersected with her personal correspondence and records, and the archive reflects those overlaps. Martin's research into specific tribes, people, and movements in Africa would be useful as primary and secondary records of history on the continent. Her records of syllabi and teaching philosophies chart out American influence on higher education in Liberia and Nigeria where she worked. Documents here also show her work with several institutions where she supported educational programs. Papers, research, and correspondence document her longstanding interest in art and objects in Liberia and her work with the Everhart Museum in Scranton, PA. Melanie Atherton Updegraff Collection, 1910s-1980s (bulk) 1685-2020 (inclusive)

Melanie Atherton Updegraff (1886-1973) was a 1908 graduate of Bryn Mawr who went on to do missionary work for the Presbyterian Mission Board alongside her husband, Reverend David Benjamin Updegraff. The two were primarily stationed in Kolhapur and later Nipani, in West India. The collection includes correspondence between Updegraff and her sisters, children, and sister-in-law, among other family members, photographs of the Atherton and Updegraff families, an autograph collection, and brochures, pamphlets, and official documentation pertaining to Updegraff's missionary work. Updegraff's four sisters and three daughters all went to Bryn Mawr, and we hear about entrance exams, musical productions, and other campus activities in their letters.

The James Gibson papers relate to Pennsylvania's colonial and early national periods, with particular emphasis on the work of the Pennsylvania Population Company, which sought to settle lands in the western part of the state. James Gibson (1769-1856) was a lawyer from Philadelphia who worked with the Pennsylvania Population Company and other similar organizations. Abstract:
In 1751, Joshua Humphreys was born in Haverford, Pennsylvania, and became the nation's most important naval architect in the post-Revolutionary era concerned with building and retrofitting military fleets. His most well-known ship is the Constitution, which is known as "Old Ironsides" and is the oldest commissioned U.S. naval vessel still afloat. In 1803, Humphreys retired, and his son Samuel continued the business. This collection consists of volumes, including daybooks and financial records; correspondence; family papers; and legal documents.

Abstract:
The Logan family was a prominent Philadelphia family dating back to 1699, when James Logan, the family patriarch, arrived in Philadelphia to serve as the first secretary of the Pennsylvania colony. Through work in agriculture and politics, Logan and his descendants were intimately involved in the development of the Pennsylvania colony and, later, the fledging United States. James Logan's prominence resulted in connections, both professional and familial, with other prominent colonial families, including the Norris and Dickinson families. The Logan family papers, 1638-1964 (bulk 1670-1872), documents James Logan’s personal and professional life, as well as that of several generations of his descendents. There are papers documenting the lives of his son William, his grandson George Logan, his great-grandsons Albanus Charles Logan and Algernon Sydney Logan, and the subsequent relationships with the Dickinson and Norris families. Abstract:
This collection contains the personal papers of Francis Daniel Pastorius, a German immigrant who founded the settlement of Germantown, which would later be incorporated into Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Pastorius was trained as a lawyer, and in 1683 purchased land in Pennsylvania on behalf of members of the German Frankfort Company. He is also known for his anti-slavery stance, joining the Pennsylvania Quakers in signing a protest against slavery in 1688 (the first anti-slavery document written in the United States). This collection dates from 1683-1719 and contains ten bound volumes and one folder of loose manuscripts of Pastorius’ personal papers. This includes his writings on farming and beekeeping, poetry, the beginnings of a German dictionary, a commonplace book, letters, and a book of medical ailments and remedies.

Abstract:
The Pennsylvania Population Company was established in 1792 by several prominent east coast entrepreneurs, who believed they could profit from land speculation in the western area of Pennsylvania. Due to arguments over title rights between settlers and land speculation companies in various courts, the company's sales slowed and profits declined, leading to its liquidation in 1812. The Pennsylvania Population Company papers (1785-1838) contain stock certificates and transfers, deeds, and applications for land. There are also some patents signed by Governor Thomas Mifflin, administrative and financial records, lists of land tracts, a catalog of the company’s sales from 1812, miscellaneous accounts, agreements, and contracts.

Pennsylvania Abolition Society papers, 1751-1992, undated; bulk 1780-1930

Abstract:
Growing out of egalitarian concerns of members of the Society of Friends, the Pennsylvania Abolition Society, as it is now known, was founded in 1775 as the Society for the Relief of Free Negroes Unlawfully Held in Bondage, but the Revolution caused its early Quaker members to suspend operations until 1784, when it reorganized with a broader base. From the beginning, the Abolition Society's programs were devoted not only to the abolition of slavery, but to the social and economic improvement of Black Americans as well. This collection of records documents the Pennsylvania Abolition Society's history and its work from mid 1700s to the 1990s, and particularly during the 1800s, through minutes and reports, manumissions and indentures, correspondence, financial papers, and a significant assortment of miscellaneous papers from other anti-slavery and humanitarian organzations.
