Abstract:
Roger D. Abrahams is a native of Philadelphia, PA. He received his B.A. at Swarthmore College, M.A. at Columbia University, and Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1986 he came to teach in the English and Anthropology Departments at the University of Pennsylvania following many years at the University of Texas and Scripps and Pitzer Colleges. While at Penn he served as the Founding Director for the Center for Folklore and Ethnography. The Roger D. Abrahams Collection consists of three linear feet of textual records related to his research in the Caribbean Islands and publications from throughout his career. Reel-to-reel tape recordings of songs, stories, and poems from the Caribbean, as well as photographic slides and negatives are also included in the collection.

Mary Wickham Bond papers on the "real" James Bond, 1907-1997 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The lives of James and Mary Bond, a Philadelphia ornithologist and author, respectively, were altered the day that author Ian Fleming, a bird lover who was familiar with Bond’s book, “The Birds of the West Indies,” appropriated James Bond’s name for his fictional spy character. The resulting confusion prompted Mary Wickham Bond to write “How 007 Got His Name,” in 1966, in which she tells the story of the real James Bond. This collection consists of Mary Wickham Bond’s collection of information regarding her husband, her own works on the writing, publishing and promoting of her books about her husband, and David Contosta’s writings about her husband.

Abstract:
Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was one of the most popular English novelists of the Victorian era as well as a vigorous social campaigner. This is a collection of correspondence, manuscript material, and other items related to him. The material dates from 1832-1993, with the bulk of the material dating from 1832-1870. The bulk of the correspondence consists of autograph letters by Dickens. There are also autograph letters from Dickens’s circle of family, friends, and associates.

John Frederick Lewis was a Philadelphia lawyer, philanthropist, and collector of writing samples. This collection contains letters, receipts, and other documents by British engravers. Lubin Manufacturing Company records, 1881-2006 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Siegmund Lubin (1851-1923) founded the Lubin Manufacturing Company in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, which, from 1895 to just before its collapse in 1916, grew to be one of the largest motion picture production companies in the world. His moviemaking empire started with the purchase of one film projector in 1895. Before long, it included a chain of movie theaters, multiple state-of-the-art production studios across the United States, hundreds of employees, numerous patents for recording and projecting equipment, and international movie distribution. Lubin's logo and motto, "Clear As A Bell," referred to the superior quality of his motion picture images. The Lubin Manufacturing Company records, 1881-2006, contains photographs, advertisements, business records, publicity materials, and artifacts documenting Siegmund Lubin’s short-lived career as one of America’s most successful film producers during the silent film era. The Philadelphia Chapter of the Special Libraries Association was founded in 1919 as a local library organization, the Special Libraries Council of Philadelphia and Vicinity, to promote the collection, organization, and dissemination of information to executives, research directors, and employees of industrial firms. In 1933 the Council affiliated with the Special Libraries Association, an international professional association for librarians and information professionals working in non-traditional library settings. The collection consists of publications issued by the chapter as well as bylaws, minutes, reports, and other administrative records dating from its founding.

Abstract:
Hollis Godfrey (1874-1936) served as president of the Drexel Institute of Art, Science, and Industry from 1913 to 1921. He was educated as an engineer at Tufts, Harvard, and MIT, and he later taught at MIT and served as an administrator at the School of Practical Arts in Boston. The collection contains correspondence, including a series of letters between Godfrey and the poet Vachel Lindsay; Dr. Godfrey's publications, manuscripts, and speeches; administrative records from the Engineering Economics Foundation, which Godfrey led in the 1920s; and publications collected by Dr. Godfrey, including some pamphlets and periodicals dealing with economics, national security, and the Jewish "threat."

Hollis Godfrey (1987-1936) served as president of the Drexel Institute of Art, Science, and Industry from 1913 to 1921. He was educated as an engineer at Tufts, Harvard, and MIT, where he also taught. While living in Boston he was an administrator at the School of Practical Arts in Boston. He came to Drexel in 1913 and was the President until 1921. This collection contains correspondence, speeches, and research done on Godfrey in 1959. There is also a functionalization chart on the administration of Drexel, circa 1917.

James Creese administration records, 1941-1967 (inclusive)

Abstract:
James Creese served as the president of the Drexel Institute from 1945 to 1963. His tenure began with a tremendous influx of students in the post-WWII years and continued to oversee tremendous growth of the Institute, both in the physical expansion of its campus and in the development of its academic programs, especially in engineering and cooperative education. Such extensive development required major capital investments, for which two major fundraising campaigns were undertaken during Creese’s leadership. Creese was also active in a number of local and national organizations, serving on numerous committees and sitting on the boards of several prominent local institutions. He resigned as president of Drexel in 1963 and died three years later in 1966.

Abstract:
The College of Engineering is among the oldest colleges at Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Since its establishment in 1914, it has achieved many firsts. In 1915, it became the first school at Drexel permitted to grant a four-year degree; in 1919, it was the first to implement a cooperative education program, placing students in business, industrial and professional assignments as a component of their education; and, later, in 1925, it was the first to extend the cooperative course from four years to five. Since its institution, the College of Engineering has developed and expanded its curriculum to include undergraduate and graduate programs, and research projects. This collection houses the administrative records of the College of Engineering from 1930 to 1990, with a bulk of the materials created between 1956 and 1973.
