Overview and metadata sections

The Department of Social Sciences became a part of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences when the college was established in 1970. Prior to 1970, the department had been a sponsor of the Humanities and Technology Program, an undergraduate honors program with a flexible, interdisciplinary curriculum.

Stanley Wasson joined the faculty as an associate professor of history in 1960, became the chair of the department of social sciences in 1968, and served as chairman until 1975. In addition, he served as chairman of the inaugural faculty search committee for Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences from 1966 to 1967 and committee member of the planning committee for the organization of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. In 1967, Robert G. Hallwachs, professor and Department Head for the English department was named dean of the newly formed college.

This collection, organized into eight series, documents the administration of the Department of Social Sciences at Drexel University from 1964 to 1968. The collection contains correspondence, statistics, meeting files for the department and other committees, budget information, personnel files (which are restricted), scheduling documents, and information regarding special programs within the department.

The "Correspondence" series contains administrative correspondence dating from 1966 to 1974. The bulk of this correspondence appears to deal with the logistics of running a department and hiring faculty. The materials are arranged in chronological order.

"Statistics" includes information regarding grades and teaching load. Grade statistics are general and these files do not include student names or grades. The files are arranged alphabetically.

The bulk of the "Department/Committee Meetings" series consists of Social Studies Department meetings, however, there are also files on several more specialized committees or groups. These files may, but do not always, include correspondence, minutes, and reports, and are arranged alphabetically.

"Budget" materials date from 1967 to 1975 and are arrranged in alphabetical order.

The "Personnel" series includes correspondence, resumes and hiring and salary information regarding job search candidates. These files do contain sensitive material, therefore, researchers should consult the Archivist for further information about access to the files.

"Scheduling" includes information on the scheduling of classes and rooms for academic years from 1961 to 1974. In addition to the actual scheduling forms, these folders may, but do not always, contain lists of all courses offered in the undergraduate curricula for a given year. These files are arranged chronologically.

"Special Programs" includes programs and issues that were considered and sometimes adopted by the department. Most notable of these materials is the file regarding the Afro-American History program from 1968 to 1970. The files are arranged alphabetically.

"Newsletters" contains scant information regarding the Women's Club. Included are a few files on the Women's Club News which are undated.

Researchers interested in the history of the Social Studies Department of Drexel University or Dr. Stanley Wasson will find this collection to be valuable. However, it is important to note that the majority of these files are administrative in nature, and there is little in regards to Dr. Wasson's personal life or the far-reaching history of the department.
