Abstract:
The J. Hampton Barnes Collection of Autograph Letters consists of 37 documents, most which are letters written to Dr. David Hosack (1769-1835). After attending Columbia and Princeton, he began his medical practice in Alexandria, VA. He subsequently was Professor of Botany at Columbia and taught in the medical school. He was the attending physician at the Burr-Hamilton duel, a founder of Rutgers Medical College, a founder of Bellevue Hospital in New York City, and an author of numerous scientific works and biographies. The collection contains correspondence from a number of noteworthy people, such as Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Baron von Humboldt, and Sir Humphry Davy.

Friends Freedmen's Association Records, 1863-1982 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Friends' Freedmen's Association was an organization of Philadelphia Quakers founded in 1863 as Friends' Association of Philadelphia and Its Vicinity, for the Relief of Colored Freemen. Its purpose was to provide relief and education to formerly enslaved people during and after the Civil War. The name was changed circa 1873. From 1947-1955 the Association supported black students in schools and summer work camps. From 1955-1970 the income from investments was used to provide grants for scholarship to needy black students. From 1970 income and principal was distributed yearly primarily among Bryn Mawr, Earlham, Guilford, and Haverford Colleges. In January 1982 the Association was dissolved. The funds were distributed among the four colleges named above to be used as aid to black students as the J. Henry Scattergood Scholarship Fund. Bryn Mawr College Scrapbook and Photo Album Collection, 1885-1955 (inclusive)

Abstract:
This collection consists of a large number of scrapbooks assembled by Bryn Mawr College Alumnae, focusing on their years at Bryn Mawr College. The alumnae represented graduated at various times between 1891 and 1950. The vast majority of the scrapbooks come from the earlier years of Bryn Mawr College. There is huge variety among items in this collection. Some scrapbooks contain a great deal of material while others are sparse. Some provide commentary on the items, ranging from simple labels to diary-length entries. Most contain personal memorabilia such as letters and cards, as well as Bryn Mawr College-related materials. These include programs, photographs, newspaper clippings, souvenirs from dances and dinners, and college traditions material. Poems, drawings, and notes from friends give a distinctive perspective into the daily life at Bryn Mawr College. Bryn Mawr College photo archives inventory, 1885-2000s

Abstract:
The Photo Archives comprises photographs, slides, transparencies, and negatives depicting the history of Bryn Mawr College from 1885 to the early 2000s. The majority of prints are in black-and-white, though there are a few in color from the late 1960s through the 1980s. Older prints range from carte-de-visite, cabinet cards, cyanotypes and some other early photomechanical processes. Photos are organized in three sub-collections: People; Buildings and Campus; and Events and Groups. The sub-collection People contains photos of notable and miscellaneous persons from the College. The Buildings group includes images of past and current campus buildings, including exterior and interior views. The Events and Groups sub-collection comprises events, campus happenings, and student life. There are also portraits of early alumnae, yearbook photographs, Bi-Co news photographs, and images from the Summer School of Women Workers in Industry (SSWWI). Ruth Emerson (Fletcher) scrapbook, 1890-1897 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Ruth Emerson majored in Greek and Latin, graduating from Bryn Mawr College in 1893. She did graduate work at Columbia College and the American School of Classical Studies in Athens in these areas, as well. She taught Latin, Greek, and History at the secondary school level. The Ruth Emerson (Fletcher) scrapbook houses the one volume scrapbook of Ruth Emerson, Bryn Mawr College class of 1893. The scrapbook, which ranges from 1890-1897, consists mostly of letters and poems to Ruth from friends and other personal memorabilia without a lot of context.

Margaret Hilles (Johnson) scrapbook, 1890-1910 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Margaret Hilles was born in 1870. She went to secondary school in Wilmington and later attended Bryn Mawr College, graduating in 1893. Her husband was a mining engineer, and she did a large amount of travelling until his death in 1919. Hilles was involved in a number of groups. She was active in Friends organizations and a founder of the Chester County Library Association. She was a member of the Downingtown Friend's Meeting and the Downingtown Auxiliary to Chester County Hospital. Hilles passed away in 1950. The Margaret Hilles Johnson scrapbook contains Johnson's one-volume scrapbook. The scrapbook contains material from roughly 1890-1910, but focuses on Hilles' four years at Bryn Mawr.

Bryn Mawr College Posters for International Expositions Collection, 1893-1926 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Bryn Mawr College showcased its mission and prestigious programs at international expositions with an array of displayed materials. The awards in the collection demonstrate the success of these exhibitions and recognition of the high level of education provided to the undergraduate and graduate students in attendance at the college. The earliest exhibited materials in the collection were shown in 1893 at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago, where the college won an Educational Exhibit Award. Bryn Mawr was a relatively young institution at the time of the exposition in Chicago, having been open for less than ten years. In 1900, Bryn Mawr College had a more established reputation within the international community. The collection includes materials from the Paris exposition, though there are fewer materials in comparison with the St. Louis exhibit only four years later. Frances Arnold Family Letters, 1893-1902 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Frances Arnold was born in New York City in 1874, daughter of Francis and Augusta Arnold. After graduating the Brearly School, she attended Bryn Mawr College from 1893 to 1895, affiliating herself with the class of 1897. Upon leaving the College, she attended French finishing school and traveled abroad. In 1899 she returned to New York to teach mathematics at Brearly. Except for a brief stint supervising women building torpedos during World War I, Arnold remained at Brearly until 1930. She then retired to New Hampshire, where she was involved with community affairs. The Frances Arnold family letters comprise a collection of the personal correspondence of Frances Arnold, Bryn Mawr College class of 1897. The letters in the collection range from 1895 to 1902. The bulk of the collection is personal correspondence between Arnold and her family and Arnold's personal memorabilia.
