Abstract:

The Swarthmore Historical Society was established in 1988 to document, preserve, and protect the historic resources of the Borough of Swarthmore, Pa. Its archives were deposited in Friends Historical Library of Swarthmore College. The collection contains general reference files concerning the history, organizations, and activities of the Borough, combining materials collected by Swarthmore Historical Society together with reference files and photographs compiled by Friends Historical Library. Of particular interest are the field surveys on historic structures compiled for the Swarthmore Historic Resources Survey.

Abstract:

This collection contains miscellaneous photographs, engravings, illustrations, and other images, acquired over time from various sources by the Friends Historical Library of Swarthmore College. Most depict Quaker schools or the the homes of Quaker families. There are also historically Quaker senior homes, conference and retreat centers, colleges and universities, and social service agencies (hospitals, orphanages, etc.). There are images of additional miscellaneous organizations and topics related to the Society of Friends, as well as some subjects and locales with no direct or obvious connection to Quakerism.

Sharples-Paschall Family Papers, 1684-1948 (inclusive)

Abstract:

Contains collected papers of the Sharples-Paschall family, Quakers of Philadelphia and Chester County, Pennsylvania. The family descended from Nathan H. and Martha (Price) Sharples and Thomas and Anne (Price Gibson) Paschall. The collection includes deeds, estate and other legal papers, and a small amount of family correspondence compiled by Alfred D. Sharples and his son, Alfred Roberts Sharples. The legal records include apprenticeship agreements, deeds relating to Rees, Price, and Sharples/Sharpless properties in Chester County, and the notarized 1837 freedom paper for Nancy Laws. The correspondence includes letters written by a Sharples relation serving on the gunboat U.S. Delaware in 1862.

Leonore Hollander Papers, 1963-1988 (inclusive)

Abstract:

Leonore Beatrice Hollander was a noted chemist who worked in cancer research and devised an early diagnostic test for mononucleosis. A member of the Society of Friends, she was active as a member of the Indian Committee of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting for 25 years. She had a deep interest in the history and culture of the Lenape, the Native American group indigenous to the Philadelphia area. She was an associate member of the United Lenape Band, a leader of the Lenape Land Association, and a friend of Nora Thompson Dean. The vast majority of this collection relates to Leonore Hollander's interest in and work with Native American communities, especially the Lenape.
