Abstract:

Thomas Pearson (T.G. Pearson) was a sergeant in the East India Company Army, 2nd Bombay Regiment of the European Light Infantry. He traveled with new recruits from Gravesend, England, to Bombay, East India on July 31, 1849, and arrived in Bombay on November 28, 1849. This volume begins with an account of Pearson's service in the 2nd Bombay Regiment from July to December, 1849 (p. 1-2); a list of all the recruits sailing from England to Bombay on the shop Dartmouth (p. 2-12); a list of rules of conduct (p. 12); a list of useful words in English and Hindustani (p. 13-20); and Hindustani verbs (p. 105-110). The remainder of the volume is filled with Pearson's writings on a variety of topics (the moral code, drunkenness, pride, and passion, as examples).

Little is known of the Falmouth and Windham Union Libraries, probably located in the southeast of Maine. The Libby family was prominent in Maine throughout its history. James Boxall diaries of Army service in India, Afghanistan, and Egypt, 1871-1882 (inclusive)

Abstract:

James Boxall was a British soldier in the 4th Battalion, Rifle Brigade of the East India Company Army. He served in India and Afghanistan from 1874 to 1881. He returned to England, but was sent to Egypt in 1882, following the bombardment of Alexandria. These two diaries document James Boxall's service in India, Afghanistan, and Egypt. The first volume contains a narrative of Army life, including locations, illnesses, deaths, and criticisms of the officer class and their decision making. In addition there are playbills and programs from productions in which Boxall and his wife and son participated.

Eliza Gulston annotations to A collection of poems in four volumes by several hands, not before 1809

Abstract:

Eliza Gulston was the daughter of book and print collector Joseph Gulston (1745-1786) and amateur artist, poet, and astronomer Elizabeth Bridgetta Stepney (1749-1780). Some time before 1809, she created these two volumes which contain Volumes 1 and 2 of A collection of poems in four volumes by several hands (London: J. Hughs for R. and J. Dodsley, 1755), mounted into quarto sheets, interleaved, and heavily annotated mostly on the interleaved sheets by Eliza Gulston with historical and biographical notes.

Abstract:

Nothing is known about Max Buetow, except that he appears to have been a Jewish musician. This volume contains Jewish songs, originally recorded by Max Buetow. It appears that the volume was used and added to by Rabbi Samuel Marcus Gollancz, cantor of the Hambro' Synagogue in London. All the songs are in German and include underlined titles.

Thomas Kirkland Glazebrook notebook, 1807-1831 (inclusive)

Abstract:

T. K. (Thomas Kirkwood) Glazebrook was the founder of Orford Lane Glassworks and appears to have lived in Warrington, England. He was an author with his first work, First eclogue of Virgil, translated into English verse, published in 1807. He published a few other volumes as well as occasional songs and poetical effusions. This notebook contains Glazebrook's own translation of First eclogue of Virgil, which was published in 1807, lists of books, lists of musical instruments, and a text in what appears to be partly code or shorthand.
