Hunn-Karsner Family Papers, 1809-1985 (inclusive) 1947-1974 (bulk)

Abstract:

The collection contains correspondence, writings, and other papers of the family of Ezekiel Hunn and Lydia Jones Sharpless Hunn, Philadelphia and Delaware Quakers. The papers were compiled by their granddaughter Katherine Hunn Karsner (1899-1993). She was a Philadelphia Quaker minister and married Joseph Reed Karsner in 1930 under the care of Philadelphia Monthly Meeting (Hicksite). The bulk of the collection is composed of correspondence from their daughter, Mary Ann Karsner Kegler (1932-1983) who moved to Alaska in 1950 and was one of the founders of Chena Ridge Monthly Meeting. The collection also contains earlier family correspondence between Ezekiel and Lydia Jenkins Hunn and other members of the Hunn family. The writings include diaries and writings by Katherine Hunn Karsner, her sister Lydia Hunn Williamson, Joseph Karsner, and Mary Ann Karsner Kegler.

The George Webb and Eleanor Brooks Webb papers include the extensive journals, correspondence, and other papers of Baltimore Quakers Eleanor and George Webb. Eleanor's detailed journals cover most of her life -- from her 12th year until her death in 1997. Also of particular interest are the correspondence, album, photographs, and other records of George work in Civilian Public Service during World War II.

Sharpless-Reeve family papers, 1852-1957 (inclusive)

Abstract:

The collected papers of the Sharpless and Reeve family of New Jersey and Philadelphia. Much of the correspondence is between Edward Sharpless (1831-1894), a New Jersey Quaker minister, and his sister, Anna N. Sharpless, who married John Newbold Reeve in 1857. Their daughter, Mary Offley Reeve, worked as a school teacher when young and became involved in temperance and evangelical Christianity. She shared these interests, reflected in diaries and other writings, with Annie Way Smith, a long-time friend and member of Fishertown Monthly Meeting. The collection illustrates Quaker responses to early twentieth century social and religious trends.

George A. Hoadley photograph collection, circa 1890-1929 (bulk)

Abstract:

The collection contains photographs taken by George A. Hoadley, long-time professor of physics at Swarthmore College and secretary of the Franklin Institute. A founder of the Swarthmore College Camera Club, he was a avid amateur photographer. Approximately 2,000 of his glass negatives were preserved in the family home; they illustrate Swarthmore College and local homes and sites from circa 1899-1929.

Smedley Family Photographs, ca. 1875-1979 (inclusive)

Abstract:

The Smedley family in America is descended from a George Smedley, a Quaker, who arrived in Pennsylvania about 1682, purchasing property from William Penn in what is now Middletown Township, Delaware County. The collection represents the descendants of Thomas Smedley and his brother Edward G. Smedley. The property was purchased by a nephew, Walter Smedley, a well-known Philadelphia Quaker architect. His widow married C. Canby Balderston, a business executive. The family sold the remaining property to Middletown Township in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. The collection includes photographs of the extended Smedley family, Westtown Boarding School, Penncrest Farm, and the careers of Walter Smedley, architect, and C. Canby Balderston.
