Overview and metadata sections

Eleanor Brooks Webb was born in Jackson County, Ohio, and grew up in Rio Grande, a small town in southeast Ohio; her father was a missionary in the American Sunday-School Union. She attended Rio Grande College and earned a Bachelor's degree from Otterbein College in 194i, joining the American Friends Service Committee Peace Caravan for a summer. She then worked for the Ohio Baptist Convention doing Publicity and office work and three months for the Christian Friendliness Department of the Woman's American Baptist Home Mission Society. She attended Yale Divinity School in 1944-45 to prepare for work in Christian journalism.

Eleanor married George N. Webb in 1946. After their marriage, the couple moved to Toledo, Ohio, while George studied electrical engineering. Son Randall Webb was born in 1948 and daughter Alison in 1952 in North Carolina. When George accepted a position at Johns Hopkins the family settled in northeast Baltimore. They joined Stony Run Meeting soon after. Eleanor was very active in the Meeting but also participated on the Yearly Meeting level and in Friends General Conference. She was also a member of the Board of Friends Journal and served as Chair for four years.

George Webb was also born in Ohio and graduated from the University of Toledo in 1947. He was a conscientious objector and worked in Civilian Public Service during World War II. Webb joined the faculty of Johns Hopkins after earning a degree at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Engineering. He was also involved in Friends General Conference.

Collection includes the extensive journals, correspondence, and other papers of Quakers Eleanor and George Webb of Baltimore, Maryland. Eleanor's detailed journals cover most of her life -- from her 12th year until her death in 1997. Also of particular interest are the correspondence, album, photographs, and other records of George work in Civilian Public Service during World War II.

George Webb and Eleanor Brooks Webb Papers were donated to Friends Historical Library of Swarthmore College, 2019, by Alison Webb Schweiger.
