Abstract:

The Greater Philadelphia Committee for Medical-Pharmaceutical Sciences (GPCMPS) was established by The College of Physicians of Philadelphia in 1963, and the Committee held its first meeting on Aril 18, 1963. Members of the pharmaceutical and medical fields in the Philadelphia area formed the GPCMPS in response to the 1962 Drug Amendments of the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. Its "purpose [was] a broad concern for medical-pharmaceutical research, in all of its phases, and for all related matters that affect the health of the American people." In 1988, the Greater Philadelphia Committee for Medical-Pharmaceutical Sciences was disbanded because recent attempts to redefine and revitalize the committee had failed and because other organizations largely fulfilled the goals and purposes of the original committee. Professor O. Cederström phrenological character of J. C. Marrill, 1880

Abstract:

This small collection consists of a document describing the personality and character traits of J. C. Marrill based on a phrenological examination by Professor O. Cederström on Augsut 19, 1880. The character reading is printed, with handwritten notes in the margins and other markings. The cover of the pamphlet includes the phrenological character of Cederström, given by O. S. Fowler.

Abstract:

The Section on Medical History was founded in 1904. In 1905, the Section began holding meetings at which lectures on medical history were presented, inviting papers from physicians and scholars from a variety of backgrounds. By the 1970s, the section had become the sponsor of several annual lectures, including the Kate Hurd Mead Lecture (co-sponsored by the [Woman's] Medical College of Pennsylvania, now Drexel College of Medicine) which was started in 1952 and the Samuel X. Radbill Lecture (1974). As of 2019, the Section on Medical History remains an active body of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. The Records of the Section on Medical History IV span the years 2005 to 2013, and consist of correspondence, Executive Committee minutes, lecture flyers and programs, and speaker information, including CD-Rs of recorded lectures sponsored by the Section. John Hunter letter to Edward Jenner, 1791 December 10

Abstract:

John Hunter FRS (13 February 1728 – 16 October 1793) was a Scottish surgeon, one of the most distinguished scientists and surgeons of his day. He was an early advocate of careful observation and scientific method in medicine. He was a teacher of, and collaborator with, Edward Jenner, pioneer of the smallpox vaccine. He is alleged to have paid for the stolen body of Charles Byrne, and proceeded to study and exhibit it against the deceased's explicit wishes. Hunter died in 1793 of a heart attack. Edward Jenner, FRS FRCPE[1] (17 May 1749 – 26 January 1823) was an English physician and scientist who was the pioneer of smallpox vaccine, the world's first vaccine. The terms "vaccine" and "vaccination" are derived from Variolae vaccinae (smallpox of the cow), the term devised by Jenner to denote cowpox. He used it in 1796 in the long title of his Inquiry into the Variolae vaccinae known as the Cow Pox, in which he described the protective effect of cowpox against smallpox. Jenner died...(see more)

Oliver Wendell Holmes lines on the presentation of his portrait, 1892 (inclusive)

Abstract:

Oliver Wendell Holmes was an American physician, poet, and humorist notable for his medical research and teaching, and as the author of the "Breakfast-Table" series of essays. He was born in 1809 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and died in 1984. He received his M.D. in 1836 from Harvard Medical School. His most well-known essay was the controversial "The Contagiousness of Puerperal Fever" (1843). In 1886, he received honorary degrees from Oxford, Cambridge, and Edinburgh Universities. He was elected an Associate Fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia on May 4, 1892. His portrait had been presented to the College several days earlier, on April 30. This small collection consists of two typescript pamphlets of "Lines by Oliver Wendell Holmes on the presentation of his portrait to the Philadelphia College of Physicians", as well as a handwritten copy of the poem.

Abstract:

Established in 1788, the Library of the College of Physicians served as Philadelphia's central medical library for over 150 years, serving medical schools, hospitals, physicians and other health professionals. Today, it is an independent research library devoted to the history of medicine and serves hundreds of scholars, health professionals, students and popular writers each year. The College of Physicians of Philadelphia Library Records II date from 1923 to 2007. This is a small collection of loose, mostly unrelated material that was found during the 2015 archives survey. It includes correspondence of various Library employees, early incunabula catalogs, and materials related to the management of the Mütter Museum, some of which fell under the Katherine A. Shaw Public Services Division of the Library.

Abstract:

Established in 1788, the Library of the College of Physicians served as Philadelphia's central medical library for over 150 years, serving medical schools, hospitals, physicians and other health professionals. Today, it is an independent research library devoted to the history of medicine and serves hundreds of scholars, health professionals, students and popular writers each year. This collection, Library exhibtion labels, dates from the 1960s through 1997, although the bulk of the material is from 1973 through 1975. It contains labels, and a few typescript booklets, for exhibits curated by Library staff. All folder titles came from the envelopes in which the labels were originally stored.

Abstract:

The Section on Medical Ethics was officially established on June 26, 1994. Originally called the Section on Bioethics, it was reorganized in late 1996 as the Section on Medical Ethics to better reflect its purposes: To promote understanding of [biomedical] medical ethics issues among healthcare professionals and the general public; to promote educational programs for healthcare professionals and the community; to promote research and scholarship in the field of medical ethics [bioethics] and the history of medical issues; and to faciliate consensus in matters of medical ethis [bioethcis] and policy. The Section hosted lectures and other programming at the College. In late 2005 or 2006, nearly all College sections were discontinued, including the Section on Medical Ethics. Annual reports of the Section on Ophthalmology, 1991-1994 (inclusive)

Abstract:

The Section on Ophthalmology of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia was instituted in 1893, the first Section to be formed at the College. In 1890, Fellows specializing in ophthalmology requested permission from the College to meet once a month to read papers and discuss topics relevant to their field. Although many Fellows were opposed to such specialization, permission for the meetings was granted on 5 November 1890. On 16 November 1890, fifteen ophthalmologists, including chairman William F. Norris and secretary Edward Jackson, held their first meeting in the College. In late 2005 or 2006, nearly all College sections were discontinued, including the Section on Ophthalmology. This small collection contains annual reports for the Section for the years 1991 through 1994. It was discovered during a survey in the summer and fall of 2015.
