Abstract:
The Section on Medical Ethics was officially established on June 26, 1994. Originally called the Section on Bioethics, it was reorganized in late 1996 as the Section on Medical Ethics to better reflect its purposes: To promote understanding of [biomedical] medical ethics issues among healthcare professionals and the general public; to promote educational programs for healthcare professionals and the community; to promote research and scholarship in the field of medical ethics [bioethics] and the history of medical issues; and to faciliate consensus in matters of medical ethis [bioethcis] and policy. The Section hosted lectures and other programming at the College. In late 2005 or 2006, nearly all College sections were discontinued, including the Section on Medical Ethics. The Records of the Section on Medical Ethics date from 1993 to 1999, and consist mainly of correspondence relating to its 1996 reorganization; some meeting minutes and agendas of the Steering and Executive Committees from 1995 through 1997, and membership lists. One folder holds correspondence relating to the planning and establishment of the Section, from 1993 to 1995. The collection also contains a very few lecture-related flyers and calendars, mainly for the years 1996 and 1997, as well as by-laws from 1995 and 1996. Ideas for projects, such as a Center for the History of Medical Ethics, are also included, although the plans were never realized.
