Abstract:: While the Society of Friends is a "ministry of all believers," historically certain members have been recognized for their spiritual gifts. Those who undertake to travel and preach with the approbation of their home meeting are known as Public Friends. Especially in the 17th, 18th, and 19th century, traveling ministers served a key role in forming Quaker social and theological networks, fostering unity within the Society of Friends, and providing spiritual enrichment to Quakers across the world. Ministers who felt a spiritual opening directing them to travel would tell their Monthly Meeting, and if approved, the meeting would write a minute for the minister to carry on their journey and present to the Meeting(s) they visited. Quaker Meetings would often keep records of the Public Friends who visited them. Friends Historical Library collection of memorials, 1760-1920 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Memorials are brief biographical essays which testify to the spiritual values of a Quaker's life. Early meetings only wrote memorials for ministers, but today some meetings continue the practice to memorialize all deceased members. In the 19th century, in particular, some Yearly Meetings periodically published compilations of memorials. This collection consists of miscellaneous memorials, from various meetings and regarding various Friends, collected by the Friends Historical Library over time.

Foster-Meyers family pictures, 1865-1985 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Meyers-Foster family are Quakers with close ties to Pennsylvania and in particular Westtown School. This collection consists primarily of color slides, card photographs, and loose photographs, both of the Foster-Meyers family and of organizations they were involved with.

Longstreth family photographs, 1735-1980 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Longstreth family were Pennsylvania Quakers who married into the Cook and Noble families. Thomas B. Longstreth (1796-1867) was a Philadelphia building contractor who married Lydia Noble (1803-1879), and both were active members of Green Street Monthly Meeting. Lydia was the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth (Tompkins) Noble, members of Philadelphia Monthly Meeting, Northern District. Samuel Noble was a successful tanner. This collection is composed primarily of black and white albums, loose photographs, and card photos. Most photographs are portraits of family members.

Gibbons family photographs, 1880-1987 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Gibbons family were Quakers in the Chester County / Delaware County area. They were heavily involved in philanthropic work, donating funds for a Sunday School to Swarthmore Presbyterian Church, and founding the Gibbons Home. This collection is composed of Gibbons family images--portraits of individuals, travel photos, and prints/photos of residences, among others. Card photos, tintypes, a few loose color photographs, and others are found in this collection.

Abstract:: Mary Cushing (Howard) Niles (1900-1993) was a pioneer in the field of personnel management, and her husband, Henry E. Niles (1900-1993), was a management executive. Both were active in Quaker concerns. This collection includes formal portraits of family members, career-related pictures, travel photos, family photos, photos of family friends, and miscellaneous photos, along with slides and negatives.

Jenkins family photograph albums, 1800-1900 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Walter Hallowell Jenkins was a storekeeper in Gwynedd, served as Clerk of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting and operated the Friends Book Store in Philadelphia. His wife, Esther Peterman Lukens, was the daughter of Alan R. and Mary B. (Butcher) Lukens. Of their five children, only Sarah married. The family had many connections to Swarthmore College. This collection consists of four family albums.

William Baxter family photographs, 1840-1942 (inclusive)

Abstract:: William Baxter (1824-1886) was a Philadelphia Quaker wool merchant who later settled in Richmond, Wayne County, Indiana. He was active in social reform, particularly in the temperance movement. This collection contains Baxter family pictures, in the form of albums and loose photographs.

Anna Gillingham photographs, 1870-1953 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Anna Gillingham (1878-1964) was a prominent Quaker educator and author. She taught at Friends Central School in Philadelphia from 1901-05, was school psychologist in the Ethical Culture School in New York City from 1905-36, directed the remedial reading program at the Punahon School in Honolulu from 1936-38, and was a consultant on remedial reading after 1938. She also co-authored a book on remedial training for children with Stillman. She was co-founder of the Orton Society, a national organization promoting research and treatment of language disabilities. This collection contains black and white photos from Anna Gillingham's work, life, and travel.
