George H. Burr Collected Papers on the Quaker Separation, 1822-1836 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Burr Collection includes manuscripts which document the Hicksite position during the Separation of 1827/28 in Philadelphia Yearly Meeting and the trial over the Crosswicks School Fund. It is directly related to the Southard Papers/RG5/312, which contain a more complete description of the controversy. It also includes Burr's manuscript on the History of the Society of Friends which he compiled for Southard as background in preparing his case representing the Hicksite position.

Anna Wharton Morris family photographs, 1823-1997 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Anna Wharton Morris was the youngest daughter of Joseph Wharton, prominent Philadelphia industrialist and philanthropist. She was a birthright member of the Society of Friends, active in prison reform and other social reform movements of her day, and was a profilic writer, primarily of short stories and essays. In 1896, she married Harrison S. Morris, Philadelphia author and arts administrator, and they had one child, Catharine Morris Wright. The photographs in this collection are related to the Anna Wharton Morris Papers, RG5/106. The photographs date from as early as 1796 but are mostly from the 1860s and onwards. The photographs are either bound in leather albums or loose. They depict the Wharton Morris family and friends.

Rogerenes of New England Collection, 1817-1991 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Rogerenes of New England collection contains research materials and some original manuscript and published works by the Rogerenes which were collected by Ellen Starr Brinton during her tenure as Curator of the Swarthmore College Peace Collection, 1935-1951. She wrote several articles on the sect and compiled an extensive bibliography of sources.

John Woolman Manuscripts Collection, 1720-1939 (inclusive)

Abstract:: John Woolman (1720-1772) was one of the most influential ministers in the history of the Religious Society of Friends. He was particularly active in opposing slavery and encouraging Quakers to disavow the practice. His journal, published posthumously, is still considered an important document in the fields of religion, history, and literature. The Friends Historical Library of Swarthmore College holds several versions of Woolman's manuscript journal, letters written by Woolman, and other assorted documents.

Friends Historical Library collection of miscellaneous queries, 1749-1902 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Early in their history, Quakers developed "queries," a series of questions, to assess the state of the religious society and guide personal and communal self-reflection. Queries are formulated by the Yearly Meetings for their constituent meetings, who in turn give reports to Yearly Meeting. This collection consists of miscellaneous loose queries and answers, from various Yearly Meetings, accumulated by the Friends Historical Library over time.

John family pictures, 1775-1951 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The John family is a Quaker family of Uwchlan and Shamokin Valley in Pennsylvania. Some of the family later moved to Illinois but continued to be active in Friends organizations. This collection consists primarily of card photos of the John family, along with some prints and negatives of scenes.

Brooks family photographs, 1790-1992 (inclusive)

Extent:: 3.5 cubic ft. (9 boxes, 1 oversized box)
Abstract:: Involved in this collection are Morgan Brooks (1861-1947), a professor of engineering, and his wife, Frona Marie (Brooks) Brooks (1861-1947). One of their children, Charles Franklin Brooks (1891-1958), became a member of the Society of Friends shortly after marrying Eleanor M. Stabler (1892-1986) in 1914. Their daughter, Barbara Brooks (1922-2007), married Edward H. Kerner, and she was active in Quaker concerns, particularly peace. This collection contains loose photgraphs, albums, and photos of family groups, among others.
