Morris-Shinn-Maier collection, 1720-1975 (inclusive)

Abstract:
This collection spans approximately 200 years, from the late 1700s to the late 1900s, and five generations of the Morris-Shinn-Maier family, which are traced through matrilineal and patrilineal lines. They were prominent Quaker businessmen and lawyers in the Philadelphia area, and a large portion of the collection is dedicated to their legal and business material, as well as a great deal of very detailed financial material. There is also a quantity of personal material, namely diaries and correspondence, and material from philanthropic work done by later generations. Principal individuals include Paul David Irwin Maier, William Morris Maier, Anna Shinn Maier, Levi Morris and Naomi McClenachan Morris. A genealogical chart done by a Haverford student while processing the collection has been printed out and is included in the box 1191 (ovs).

Photographs from the E. Raymond Wilson Papers, 1930-1981 (inclusive)

Abstract:
E. Raymond Wilson (1896-1987), a Quaker peace lobbyist, helped found the Friends Committee on National Legislation in 1943 and served as its Executive Secretary until 1962. He also helped organize the Committee on Militarism in Education in 1925. From 1931 to 1943, he served as Field and Education Secretary of the Peace Section of the American Friends Service Committee. He was the author of two books. This collection of photographs contains family photographs, greeting cards, and newspaper articles about his family and friends (all Quakers).

Abstract:
Daisy Newman's novel, "Indian Summer of the Heart," is the sequel to "I take thee, Serenity," and focuses on two entwined love stories. The first story is that of the continuing story of Peter and Serenity Holland, married at the end of the earlier book, as they face the difficult stresses of building two careers while also trying to meet the needs of Ross, their little boy. The other love story is that of Oliver Otis, a 78 year old widower, and Peter and Serenity's mentor, and Loveday Mead, who has come to the little Quaker village of Kendal. Both stories focus on the difficulties that stem from the pressures of modern life and the effect of the influence of Quakerism on the lives of the characters.

J. P. Elkinton's autobiography describes his childhood and family, his attendance at Haverford College, from which he graduated in 1908. He also describes his experiences with the Society of Friends, particularly his travels on religious visits, and his adult life with his wife, Mary Bucknell, and their children. In addition to stories from various periods of his life, he provides biographical sketches of his family members.

Abstract:
This collection contains manuscripts and other materials relating to the Whitson, Smedley, Fisher and other Quaker families of southeastern Pennsylvania. Along with commonplace books, correspondence, and photographs are a series of thematically arranged genealogical binders assembled by the donors. Of particular interest are the battlefield correspondence of Sam Smedley who was killed in the American Civil War and the journal of Esther Whitson, later Cope, who served as a nurse with the AFSC in Russia in the early 1920s

Anna Wharton Morris family photographs, 1823-1997 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Anna Wharton Morris was the youngest daughter of Joseph Wharton, prominent Philadelphia industrialist and philanthropist. She was a birthright member of the Society of Friends, active in prison reform and other social reform movements of her day, and was a profilic writer, primarily of short stories and essays. In 1896, she married Harrison S. Morris, Philadelphia author and arts administrator, and they had one child, Catharine Morris Wright. The photographs in this collection are related to the Anna Wharton Morris Papers, RG5/106. The photographs date from as early as 1796 but are mostly from the 1860s and onwards. The photographs are either bound in leather albums or loose. They depict the Wharton Morris family and friends.
