Abstract:
The William Penn Charter School archives contain the financial, historical, business, and social records of the school, dating back as far as 1611. Documents signed by William Penn, Benjamin Franklin, and former Philadelphia mayors William Hudson and Edward Shippen, are included as well as a variety of school texts and memorabilia, which illuminate the traditions and history of the William Penn Charter School.

Morris-Shinn-Maier collection, 1720-1975 (inclusive)

Abstract:
This collection spans approximately 200 years, from the late 1700s to the late 1900s, and five generations of the Morris-Shinn-Maier family, which are traced through matrilineal and patrilineal lines. They were prominent Quaker businessmen and lawyers in the Philadelphia area, and a large portion of the collection is dedicated to their legal and business material, as well as a great deal of very detailed financial material. There is also a quantity of personal material, namely diaries and correspondence, and material from philanthropic work done by later generations. Principal individuals include Paul David Irwin Maier, William Morris Maier, Anna Shinn Maier, Levi Morris and Naomi McClenachan Morris. A genealogical chart done by a Haverford student while processing the collection has been printed out and is included in the box 1191 (ovs).

Vaux Family papers, 1708-1995 (inclusive) 1912-1932 (bulk)

Abstract:
The Vaux family was deeply involved with Quaker and Native American affairs throughout much of the 19th and early 20th centuries. George Vaux, Sr. was involved in Quaker activity through the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting and other Quaker meetings throughout the world (including Antigua and London). Both George Vaux, Jr. and Mary Morris Vaux Walcott, his sister, served as commissioners for the U.S. Board of Indian Commissioners. This organization was established by the United States Congress in 1869 to watch over federal policies regarding Native Americans and to make certain that treaty obligations were fulfilled, especially in reference to supply deliveries. George Vaux, III also worked as the treasurer of the Indian Committee of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting. Within the collection are letters, reports, photographs, land surveys, and administrative records. Materials pertain to the Gummere family, including the 1868 diary of Francis Barton Gummere, letters of various members of the Gummere family in the mid-19th century and a manuscript "The Romance of Old Silver" possibly by Amelia Mott Gummere. Also material of the New York Mott family, including a volume of the correspondence of Richard Mott (a minister) and Abigail Field Mott (an elder) who were husband and wife; a diary kept by Richard Mott during his travels in the ministry, 1797-1798; a Mott family scrapbook kept by Richard F. Mott and his daughter, Amelia Mott Gummere, 1886, including a D.S. by Gov. DeWitt Clinton of New York; Mott family miscellany; and selected writings of Robert F. and Hannah B. Mott. David Cooper wrote his memoir during his later years, when his health was failing, so that his children would be able to reference an account of his life after his death. A note on the inside cover reads: "A Gift of David Cooper to his daughter Martha Allinson." In the memoir, Cooper recounts his early life, his family history, his marriage, the birth of his children, his Quakerism, his struggles with his faith, his work as a representative in 1761, and his attendance at Quaker Meetings.

This collection contains materials that belonged to members of the Wistar and Canby families, prominent families in Pennsylvania and Delaware. Many of the letters and personal papers have to do with family genaological research pursued by William Marriott Canby Jr. Also included in this collection is a baby shirt and cap worn by William Canby in 1748.
