Abstract:: Correspondence includes letters written by Amos W. Bacon of Philadelphia to his children, to Samuel W. Bacon from his father and brother while he was at Westtown School, and a love letter from Thomas Bacon to his future wife, Elizabeth Hall. Also contains the probate copy of the will of Charles West, Elizabeth Hall's copy book, the journal of Jane Wilson Bacon, and genealogical material on the entire family.

Clement family letters, 1857-1912 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Small collection of family correspondence that includes two letters that concern the Clements and Sharpless families' involvement in abolition activities. Contains a copy and typed transcript of a letter from William Lloyd Garrison Clement (1834-1889) to Gilbert Cope, historian of the Sharpless family, which describes events surrounding the formation of American Anti-Slavery Society and the Clement family's interaction with African-Americans living in the Mount Holly, N.J, area. The typed transcript includes information that a letter published by Cope from Charles B. Clement, brother of W. L. G. Clement, records different details. A letter of 1857 from Mary S. Clement to her son mentions a visit to New Jersey of African-American lecturer Frances Watkins Harper.

Mott Manuscripts, 1831-1898 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Lucretia Mott was a prominent Philadelphia Quaker minister and a leader in reform movements, especially antislavery, education, peace, and women's rights. She was born in 1793 in Nantucket, Mass., the daughter of Thomas and Anna Coffin, and educated at Nine Partners Boarding School in Dutchess Co., N.Y. In 1811, she married James Mott and they settled in Philadelphia, Pa. The Motts were active Hicksite Quakers, and Lucretia served as clerk of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting and traveled in the ministry. James Mott died in 1869, and Lucretia died in 1880. The bulk of the collection consists of material which was assembled at the time of the publication of Life and Letters by Anna Davis Hallowell in 1884. It includes original correspondence of Lucretia Mott and her husband, James M. Mott, with family and other reformers of their day. Also contains sermons, essays, and antislavery documents, and the diary of Lucretia Mott's trip to England to attend the World's Antislavery Convention of 1840.

Clark-Allen family papers, 1725-1932 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The collection contains family correspondence (4 ALsS), genealogical notes, and bible records. It includes family correspondence received by Rebecca Clark, 1804-1806, before her marriage to John Humphrey. One letter is from her sister Elizabeth and the other letters were written by her mother Bathsheba Clark. Bathsheba mentions caring for a grandchild with smallpox and various needlework projects. The genealogical information includes pages from a family bible, research on the Allen, Clark, and Elten families, much of which is consolidated into a family tree by Richard J. Allen, Jr. (1860-1935), an older brother of William C. Allen.

Henry Tyson Lea correspondence received, 1887-1913 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The collection contains correspondence received by Henry Tyson Lea of Methuen and Lawrence, Mass., from his Kummer cousins, Edith, Mary C., and Lucy Kummer, who lived in West Medford, Mass. Most of the letters are from Lucy whose letters describe her early years as a teacher and the places she visits, including a walking trip with the Appalachian Club to Walden in a November 1887. A letter dated 1913 is directed to Henry's widow.

Eli F. Brown Collection, circa 1880-1905 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The collection contains manuscript memoirs of Eli F. Brown (1842-1908) in which he describes the hardships of Quakers caught in Loudoun County, Virginia, during the Civil War and immediately thereafter. He was briefly imprisoned for refusing miliary service and describes the looting and guerilla warfare, and the burning of Loudoun County in late 1864 on Sheridan's orders. Also in the collection is Brown's sympathetic account of John Brown's revolt in nearby Harpers Ferry as well as 19 family photographs mostly of the family of his daughter's in-laws.

Gertrude Gilmore Lafore letters received, circa 1890-1944 (inclusive) 1928-1933 (bulk)

Abstract:: Gertrude Gilmore Lafore (1905-1993) was an alumna of Swarthmore College and a nursery school teacher based in Moylan, Pa. The bulk of the Gertrude Gilmore Lafore letters received date from 1928 to 1933 and are personal in nature, although there are also letters relating to her education, employment, and finances. There are a few letters from later years, and a couple photographs.
