Overview and metadata sections

Gertrude Gilmore graduated from Swarthmore College in 1928, and went on to earn an MA (1933) and PhD (1943) in childhood development from Columbia University. She married fellow Swarthmore alumnus Robert W. Lafore (class of 1927), and their son Robert W. Lafore, Jr. also attended the college (class of 1960). The family settled in Moylan, Pennsylvania, where Gertrude worked as nursery school teacher at Rose Valley School and settled in Moylan, Pennsylvania.

This collection consists almost entirely of letters received by Gertrude Gilmore (later Lafore) between 1928 and 1933. The bulk are personal in nature, from Gertrude's friends, sweethearts, and parents; there are also letters relating to her education, employment, and finances. There are a few letters from later years, and a couple photographs.
