Abstract:: Isaac Leeser (1806-1868) was a rabbi, educator, writer, translator, editor and publisher; and proposed, founded, or led many significant civic, religious, and charitable institutions. This collection consists of letters, largely written to or from Isacc Leeser, that bear witness to Leeser's efforts to build the infrastructure of organized Jewish life in an English-speaking environment.

H. H. Furness Memorial Library manuscript collection, 1575-1991 (inclusive) 1812-1930 (bulk)

Abstract:: The H.H. Furness Memorial Library focuses on the study of Shakespeare and other Tudor and Stuart dramatists. Horace Howard Furness (1833-1912) and his son Horace Howard Furness Jr. (1865-1930) founded and edited the Variorum Shakespeare and their library was donated to the University of Pennsylvania in 1932. This collection contains personal correspondence to and from Rev. William Henry Furness (1802-1896), Horace Howard Furness, and Horace Howard Furness, Jr., largely relating to Shakespearean study and the H.H. Furness Memorial library; notebooks; copies of speeches and articles; and other assorted items relating to Shakespearean scholarship or to the Furness family.

Abstract:: John Haviland (1792-1852) was an architect who lived and worked in Philadelphia. He is known for his design of prisons, especially the Eastern State Penitentiary, as well as churches and other public buildings. This collection consists of 26 bound volumes which document the architectural career of John Haviland and includes estimates for projects and supplies, articles of agreement, financial records, correspondence, and biographical and family-related material.

Abstract:: Isaac Taylor (1829–1901) was the canon of York as well as a philologist and toponymist. This collection contains manuscript copies of some of Taylor's best-known works, including Greeks and Goths (1879), The Alphabet (1883), and Origin of the Aryans (1890). Other titles included are Words and Places (1864), which first brought him to the attention of the public, and Names and Their Histories ([1898]).

Abstract:: George Henry Boker (1823-1890) was an American poet, playwright, and diplomat whose patriotic writings supported the Union government during the American Civil War. Abstract:: The collection is divided into three major series: I. 18th and 19th century records, II. 20th century records, and III. John M. Okie papers. The first comprises correspondence, administrative records, and ephemera; the second, correspondence, committee records, financial records, proceedings, memorabilia, and collected agricultural material; the third consists of the papers of Okie, who served as assistant secretary of the Society from 1922 to 1928: he was responsible for the publication of Memoirs VI, a history of the P.S.P.A.

Howard Hospital Records, 1858-1930 (inclusive) 1917-1929 (bulk)

Abstract:: Howard Hospital was organized in 1853 as a charity hospital to provide medical care for factory workers who lived in the western part of Philadelphia. The Howard Hospital Records document the administrative activities of the Hospital during the early Twentieth Century.

ENIAC Patent Trial Collection, 1864-1973 (inclusive) 1938-1971 (bulk)

Abstract:: While trying to secure the patent for the ENIAC, serious problems for the patent rights of John Presper Eckert, Jr. and John William Mauchly arose in the 1960's. The ENIAC Papers are divided into two major series, viz., one, Sperry Rand Corporation, John P. Eckert, Jr., and John W. Mauchly vs. Bell Telephone, Incorporated; and two, Honeywell, Incorporated vs. Sperry Rand Corporation and Illinois Scientific Developments, Incorporated.

Fairman Rogers Papers, 1849-1862 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Fairman Rogers graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with an A. B. in 1853 and an A. M. in 1856, and served the University as Professor of Civil Engineering until 1864 and then as a Trustee from 1871 to 1886. He also surveys of the Potomac River for the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey. The collection consists of a scrapbook, a diary and 27 other items, including letters, memos, meeting minutes, lists of students, lecture notes, receipts, accounts, and circulars kept during his tenure as Professor.

Cornelius Nolen Weygandt Papers, 1849-1907 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Cornelius Nolen Weygandt was born in Philadelphia in 1832 and had a career in banking at the Western Bank, located on the south side of Chestnut Street just west of Fourth Street, in the heart of Philadelphia's nineteenth-century financial district and lived most of his married life in the Germantown section of Philadelphia. The Cornelius Nolen Weygandt Papers consists of personal diaries and related correspondence and ephemera that chronicle Weygandt's life from 1849 – 1907.

Hui-lin Li Papers, 1831-2002 (inclusive)

Extent:: 20 cubic feet
Abstract:: Hui-lin Li was educated at Soochow University and Yenching University in China and received his PhD in biology from Harvard University in 1942. After holding a number of research fellowship positions in both the United States and Taiwan, he came to the University of Pennsylvania as a research associate in 1952 and became a faculty member in the field of botany in 1963. The collections documents the professional career and life of Dr. Li as a professor of botany and researcher.
