Abstract:: James Garland Spady (1944-2020) was a writer, activist, journalist, and historian, and is credited for being one of the first scholars to document and study the evolution of Hip Hop. Broadly speaking, this collection reflects Spady's expansive interest in Black history and culture, particularly music, and is comprised of both his own writing and material that he collected on these topics. The collection contains notepads and notebooks, correspondence, manuscripts, photographs, newspapers, books, a large variety of articles and essays, interview transcripts, periodicals, audio compact discs, digital media, and ephemera. The collection primarily documents his professional and intellectual work from roughly 1980 until the end of his life, but very little is revealing of his personal life.

Abstract:: John Jonik is a postwar and contemporary magazine and political cartoonist from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania whose works have appeared in a wide spectrum of publications ranging from local, independent newspapers, trade and professional journals, to national newspapers and magazines including: The New Yorker, Playboy, National Lampoon, Cosmopolitan, Better Homes and Gardens, Wall Street Journal, and Esquire. His cartoons provide satirical humor and opinions on a range of themes and issues such as social activism, the environment, marijuana use, and healthcare. The John Jonik papers comprise: original published and unpublished cartoons, sketchbooks, tearsheets, printed materials, correspondence, business papers and royalty statements, catalogs, and artifacts.

David Goldenberg collection of Joseph Eyer material, 1986-1993 (inclusive)

Abstract:: David M. Goldenberg (born 1947) is a writer and an educator who was active at Dropsie College and the University of Pennsylvania. He was a neighbor of Joseph (Joe) Eyer (1944-2017), a scholar from Philadelphia whose research focused on social causes and health effects of stress. The two became friends and Eyer described Goldenberg as his "spokesman, mediator, and on occasion savior." This collection consists largely of copies of letters written by Eyer to a variety of people, and sent to Goldenberg. Some of these letters appear to have been written during times of personal crisis for Eyer and they are emotionally charged. In particular the copies of letters written to his father and brother are indicative of fraught relationships and internal conflict; but they also provide insight into his philosophies and academic interests.

Abstract:: The Philadelphia Orchestra was founded in 1900, and has developed and maintained its status as a prominent symphonic ensemble throughout its existence. Its history informs and intersects with the broader history of music in the twentieth century, as well as numerous historical movements, events and developments on a regional, national and global scale. This portion of the collection comprises administrative records. These materials document the organizational operations of the Orchestra, covering its governance; personnel management; financial management and development; artistic leadership; promotional activities; labor relations; legal activities; building and facilities maintenance, renovations and construction; and all of the logistical operations regarding performances, tours, broadcasts, and recordings. Abstract:: Emmanuel Roblès (1914-1995) was a French-Algerian author and playwright. James A. Kilker (1925-2012) was an American professor of French Studies and French translator, notably of Emmanuel Roblès' works. The James and Marie Kilker collection of Emmanuel Roblès material dates from 1941 to 2023, spans five linear feet, and primarily consists of material relating to Roblès' work and career, correspondence between the Kilkers and Roblès, and published material by Roblès. There is also material relating to other Algerian-born European authors and playwrights.
