Abstract:
The Smiths were a family of artists who worked and lived at their home in Edgehill, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. Russell Smith (1812-1896) was a prominent theater curtain painter who became a landscape painter, and his son Xanthus (1839-1929) was known for his Civil War naval battle scenes. The bulk of the Russell Smith family papers, 1805-1952, are comprised of financial records and estate records from the Smith family. The collection also includes pencil and ink sketches and watercolors created by Russell and Xanthus Smith.

Abstract:
Charles L. Comfort (1835-1913) was a Confederate Civil War veteran who settled in Philadelphia and opened a business in botanical preparations and flavoring extracts. His second wife was Ellen Lister Dern. The Comfort-Dern family papers, 1848-1925, are a miscellaneous accumulation of papers primarily relating to Charles L. Comfort and his father-in-law Conrad Dern. It includes receipted bills, family correspondence, photographs, business accounts, Badger/Comfort family genealogical notes, and various family documents and ephemera. There are also small amounts of records from two clubs in which family members were involved: the Utah Club and the Men's Chapter of the Guild of the Church of Our Savior (Jenkintown).

Montgomery County, situated in southeastern Pennsylvania and established in 1784 out of the western portion of Philadelphia County, has played an important role in U.S. history. Since its founding, it has experienced "booming industry and manufacturing, rich farm fields, advanced transportation, artistic endeavors and unique religious beliefs." The history of the area of eastern Montgomery County has been documented significantly through the collecting efforts of the Old York Road Historical Society. The Old York Road Historical Society scrapbooks collection, 1890-2000, includes scrapbooks created by the Society and created by others that principally cover eastern Montgomery County.

The Theodore B. and Annie Wallace Culver receipted bills, 1912-1914, are from various vendors in the Jenkintown area and Philadelphia, as well as receipts for charitable contributions, paid wages, collected rents, and other miscellany.

The Old York Road County Club was founded in 1909 by a small group of residents of Jenkintown, Pennsylvania, many of whom were Quakers. In 1962, the club moved from land owned by Abington Friends Meeting to a new location in Spring House, Montgomery County. The club is still active as of 2012. The Old York Road Country Club records, 1913-1989, include scrapbooks, board minutes, committee records, and miscellaneous documents.

Harry J. Utzy, Jr. (1908-1992) was a commercial, portrait, and news photographer active in the Jenkintown area. The Harry J. Utzy, Jr., photographs, 1926-1985, contain approximately 20,000 glass negatives, original film negatives, and prints that largely document the area of Jenkintown, Pennsylvania. Also included are photographic prints documenting the newly-constructed Alaska Highway (1943).
