Abstract:: The Peace Action collection is a continuation of the SANE and SANE Education Fund (DG 58) collection, which also resides at the SCPC (the papers of the Nuclear Weapons Freeze Campaign are at the University of Missouri at St. Louis). It documents the merger of SANE and the NWFC, as well as the goals and work of the merged organization, through meeting minutes, correspondence, program files, press clippings and other publicity, statements and communications with Congress and other leaders, as well as publications and resources in other formats. Includes correspondence, annual reports, administrative files, financial records, flyers and handbills, memorabilia, minutes of meetings, newspaper clippings, periodicals, publicity materials, reference files, audiocassettes, slides, reel-to-reel tapes, videocassettes, computer diskettes, photographs, and posters. Correspondents include: Nick Carter, Gordon Clark, David Cortright, Carolyn Cottom, and Monica Green.

Kay Camp Papers, 1955-2006 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Katherine Lindsley Camp was born in 1918 [1919?], Mt. Kisco New York. She was a graduate of Swarthmore College (Class of 1940). Camp was elected president of the U.S. Section of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom in 1967, and served as international president, 1974-1980. In addition Camp was founder of the Citizens Bi-Racial Study Group; former president of the Pennsylvania Women's Political Caucus; made unsuccessful bid for Congress in 1972 on the Democratic ticket in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania; member of the Society of Friends. Her papers include biographical information, personal correspondence, and involvement with numerous peace groups, as well as political activities.

Mary Bye papers, 1974-1991 (bulk) 1969-1992, undated (inclusive)

Abstract:: Mary Bye (1913-2002) was a Quaker activist who lived in rural Bucks County. She became involved in the anti-war movement during the 1960s. She was also active in causes relating to social justice and the environment. During the 1970s she became involved with anti-nuclear activism, and was a principal opponent of efforts to expand the nuclear facilities at Limerick, Pennsylvania, and elsewhere. Late in life she became increasingly concerned with environmental protection, famously attempting to save a stand of oak trees near her home from destruction. Her other major causes included Native American rights and a continuing devotion to the anti-war movement. She was a Convener of the Friends Environmental Working Group, a leading figure in the Central Bucks Clean Energy Collective and the Movement for a New Society, and a supporter of numerous local and national activist organizations. Albert Bigelow Papers, 1956-1961 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Albert S. Bigelow (1906-1993) was an artist, architect, former Navy commander, and Quaker. He served as captain of Golden Rule, a thirty foot ketch which he and colleagues attempted to sail into the Eniwetok Proving Grounds, the U.S. nuclear test site in the Marshall Islands of the Pacific in February 1958. The action was sponsored by the Committee for Non-Violent Action Against Nuclear Weapons.

Consider the Alternatives Records, 1978-1994 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Consider the Alternatives Productions was established in 1972 by the Philadelphia chapter of SANE, to conduct educational and non- partisan political activities and to receive tax deductible contributions. It was first called the SANE Education Fund of Pennsylvania. One project supported by the SANE Education Fund was a weekly half-hour radio broadcast called "SANE Views the World." In March 1978, the title of the series was changed to "Consider the Alternatives." By 1990 the organization funded only two projects: the Consider the Alternatives radio program and the SANE Education Fund Peace Award. In August of that year the name of the organization was officially changed to Consider the Alternatives Productions.

Abstract:: Col. Ann Wright served in the U.S. military an as an ambassador before resigning her post in 2003 in protest over the war on Iraq. She since has traveled extensively, written a book and many articles, and had many speaking engagements as a peace activist.

Cora Weiss Papers, 1960- (bulk)

Abstract:: Cora Weiss is a peace and social justice leader and activist. She is a supporter of the United Nations, an early member of Women Strike for Peace, a leader in the anti-Vietnam war movement in the United States. In the 1970s Weiss was the director of the Riverside Church (New York, NY) Disarmament Program. Weiss was also active with SANE, SANE/Freeze, Peace Action, and The Hague Appeal for Peace. Weiss became president of the International Peace Bureau in 2000. She has always been active in women's peace issues, hosting the first women's radio program in New York City in the 1970s, attending women's disarmament summits in the former Soveit Union, the U.N. Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995, and many other events. Weiss is the recipient of numerous peace awards from all over the world.

Abstract:: The War Resisters League is a pacifist organization whose members are against all war. Witnessing the establishment of the War Resisters' International in Europe in 1921, and sensing a need for a similar organization in the United States, Dr. Jessie Wallace Hughan established the War Resisters League as an independent organization. The War Resisters League membership pledge, which has remained essentially unchanged since its inception, reads: "The War Resisters League affirms that war is a crime against humanity. We therefore are determined not to support any kind of war, international or civil, and to strive non-violently for the removal of all causes of war." The League seeks to end war and social injustice through pacifist and nonviolent tactics.

Abstract:: The collection relates primarily to William Huntington, (1907-1990), a 20th century Quaker peace activist and the ship The Golden Rule which Huntington and others used to protest atomic testing in the South Pacific. Abstract:: Safe Energy Communication Council (SECC) was a national, non-profit council of ten environmental and public interest media groups, founded in 1980 after the 1979 partial meltdown of Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. From 1980 to 2003, SECC educated the public and the media about energy efficiency and renewable energy’s potential to produce a larger share of our nation’s energy needs, as well as the economic and environmental liabilities of nuclear power. SECC provided local, state and national organizations with technical assistance through media skills training and outreach strategies. Scott Denman served as Executive Director for the majority of SECC’s existence. This collection contains the records of the Safe Energy Communication Council. The collection dates from 1974 to 2003, and covers a wide range of materials and subjects.
