Friends' Home for Children, 1881-1988 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Friends' Home for Children ("Friendly Acres") was established in 1881 in Philadelphia by Hicksite Quakers. The Home was a residential facility for orphans and other children in need, modeled on a homelike environment rather than the large institutional more typical of the era. The Home was administered by a Board of Managers which originally was composed entirely of members of the Society of Friends. Eventually it became a summer camp, "Camp Sommerdale," a summer facility for the children. While maintaining ties to the Society of Friends, the Home became non-sectarian over the years. As attitudes towards the care of children changed and costs soared, it was decided in 1979 to phase out the residential program, and the name was changed to Friendly Acres Community Services with its mission focused on community programs, such as day care and senior services. Abstract:: The Friends Council on Education is a force in Quaker education, serving Friends' schools in an advisory, consultative, and nurturing capacity, developing mutual understanding and support among its institutions. The records include minutes and reports, 1930-1974; financial records, 1962-1983; executive committee records, 1936-1970; conference papers, 1940-1972; surveys and reports, 1930-1978; and publications, 1931-1966. Additionally included are the records of a number of subcommittees and groups related to Friends Council on Education.

Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Records: Administrative Council and its predecessors (including General Secretary Offices), 1829-2005 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The administrative structure of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting has been re-worked a number of times. This finding aid describes administrative records and office files, primarily from the early 20th century to the present -- from the time when the Hicksite and Orthodox Yearly Meetings first began to employ paid staff to handle administrative matters. Today these functions are grouped under the auspices of General Services. This finding aid also describes the records of the General Secretaries of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting from 1967 to 1996.

Abstract:: The Church Unity Committee was composed of a small group of members-at-large appointed by the Yearly Meeting and those Friends who served "in any official capacity as representatives of this Yearly Meeting on State, National, or World Councils of Churches." It had originally been appointed by the Orthodox branch to coordinate ecumenical contacts. The Committee was laid down by Representative Meeting in 1973.

Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Records: Committee on the Civil Rights of Homosexuals (1972-1987), 1975-1987 (inclusive)

Abstract:: In 1972, Philadelphia Yearly Meeting appointed a Committee on Homosexuality under the Meeting for Social Concerns to work for the assurance of civil rights for homosexuals. In December of 1975, after the Meeting for Social Concerns was laid down and Yearly Meeting restructured, it was decided that there should be a subcommittee of the Family Relations Committee on homosexuality and a Committee for the Civil Rights of Homosexuals under the Testimonies/Concerns section of Yearly Meeting; the two groups met jointly. In 1987, the Committee on Civil Rights for Homosexuals decided to lay itself down; the Subcommittee on Homosexuality continued as part of the Family Relations Committee. Includes records of the Committee on Civil Rights for Homosexuals, 1975-1987.

Abstract:: A Coordinating Committee on Civil Liberties was appointed by both PYM in 1954. The following year, the reunited Yearly Meeting approved the creation of a regular Committee on Civil Liberties "to activate anew our ancient testimony."
