Abstract:
Machteld Johanna Mellink, celebrated archaeologist and professor of archaeology at Bryn Mawr College from 1949 to 1988, was born in Amsterdam, Holland in 1917. She received her BA in 1938 and MA in 1941 from the University of Amsterdam, and her PhD from the University of Utrecht in 1943. The Machteld Mellink papers cover Professor Mellink's academic and archaeological career from the late 1950s to the early 2000s. Included in the collection are her writings and notes, photographs, publications, and a few excavation tools. Researchers interested in her academic career, as well as her work related to excavation sites such as Kızılbel, Tarsus, and Sardis, will find valuable information in this collection. However, this collection does not provide particularly strong insight into archaeological history, nor Professor Mellink's thought process when approaching archaeological issues. Included in this literary manuscript collection are Simone de Beauvoir, John Cheever, John Kenneth Galbraith, Joseph Heller, Lillian Hellman, John Le Carre, Norman Mailer, James Michener, Françoise Sagan, C.P. Snow, William Styron, Burbara Tuchman, John Updike, Leon Uris, and many others. Authors' typescripts for the preface to each represented work are also present in most instances.

Abstract:
The Sarah Wistar Rhoads family papers indicate strong relationships and family ties that spanned the 19th and 20th centuries. Sarah Wistar Rhoads (1839-1920) married William Gibbons Rhoads (1838-1880) on November 28, 1866. At that time, the Rhoads, Gibbons and Wistar families began corresponding, the result being an outstanding collection illustrating family support, friendship and love. These papers include correspondence, financial records, diaries and journals, memorabilia, classwork and notes, copied poems, prayers, sermons and verses, memorials, genealogical research, Quaker material and photographs. "Some Memorandums respecting my beloved wife Margery Mickle", 1809 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The memorandum written by Margery Mickle's husband (name unknown) recounts Mickle's illness with "tumorous pollypus" in the corner of her right eye and her nose. Her husband writes about the series of operations she underwent to remove the tumors, the re-emergence of the tumors after a number of operations, and the doctor's recommendation that they remove her right eye. The manuscript describes Mickle's decision not to undergo the operation to remove her eye, and recounts her final days, including visits from friends and family, and some quotes from Mickle's last days, as well as a description of her final moments and death in 1809. The manuscript provides a detailed account of medical practice at the time, as well as the traditions surrounding death and dying.

"Lays of Quakerdom", Undated.

Abstract:
Ruth Plumley's "Lays of Quakerdom" include three sections: "The Execution of Mary Dyer," "Visit of Mary Fisher to the Sultan Mohammed IV," and "James Parnell, the Quaker Proto-Martyr." Each section includes a brief historical summary of each individual, and a narrative poem about each individual. The "Lays" describe the piety of three icons of 17th century Quakerism. The "Lays of Quakerdom" was first published in the "Knickerbocker" magazine during the years 1853-1855, and were later published as a single volume by the Biddle Press in Philadelphia. This volume is a handwritten copy of the single published volume.

Frederick Schmidt's "An Account of the Origin and Progress of the Christian Society of Friends at Minden" provides a historical and semi-autobiographical narrative of Schmidt and his Friend John Rasch, and their involvement in the Society of Friends in present day Germany. The narrative particularly focuses on John Rasch's efforts to begin a community of Quakers in Minden, Germany, in the late 18th to early 19th centuries. The narrative also discusses Schmidt's own trials in adhering to a pious spiritual life during his early adulthood, his life at the Hessian court, and his discovery and eventual convincement to Quakerism.

Frank O. Wargny's 1947 master's thesis at John Hopkins University, entitled "Education of the Freedmen by Baltimore Quakers during the Civil War and Reconstruction Period," describes the efforts of Philadelphia and Baltimore area Quakers to provide education to freed slaves during and after the Civil War. It provides a brief history of Philadelphia area Quakers' abolition efforts prior to the Civil War, including the work of Benezet and Woolman, but the majority of the manuscript focuses on the years during the Civil War and Reconstruction. "Hegel's Theory of Positivity: An Application to Two Quaker Sects", 1984 (inclusive)
