Alice Jones diary, 1919-1946 (inclusive) 1930

Abstract:
This collection is comprised primarily of the original, handwritten diary of Alice Jones, and a photocopy of the original. Diary entries discuss the history of the Friends School in Ramallah, Palestine, religious reflection and discussions concerning the divides between Muslims, Jews, and Christians in Palestine, and discussions concerning the politics within Palestine. Jones also provides descriptions of the children she teaches at the school. In addition to the Jones's diary, the collection includes a single folder of related materials, which includes a certificate from the American Red Cross in Palestine thanking Jones for her service during World War I, four pages of typed diary entries dated 1946, and a typed poem, which is undated.

Abstract:
Eleanor Corkhill Adams Addison married William Henry Fitzgerald Addison who came to the University of Pennsylvania in 1905 when he was appointed as a Demonstrator of Normal Histology. Shortly after he received his M.D. from the University in 1917, he was became a full Professor of Normal Histology and Embryology in the School of Medicine. This diary kept by Eleanor Corkhill Adams Addison (faculty wife) from December 31, 1939 to May 21, 1944. It provides an intimate account of a wide range of faculty and campus life during the Second World War.

Charles Palmer (1863-1966) was a Quaker teacher, lawyer, and real estate broker from Chester, Pennsylvania. Abstract:
This collection spans more than two centuries and includes most notably members of the Allinson and Taylor families. There are also letters from Joseph Bonaparte, Sarah Moore Grimke, Julia Ward Howe and George Washington. Prominent material types include correspondence, diaries, financial, legal and property papers, maps, photographs and poetry. The richest subject veins are anti-slavery, including the Free Produce Association of Friends, the yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia and settlement of land in New York.

Florence Bascom papers, 1883-1938 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Florence Bascom (1862-1945) was a noted American geologist, specializing in petrography. She attended the University of Wisconsin, receiving her BA degree in 1882 and her MA degree in 1884, and was the first woman to be granted a PhD from Johns Hopkins University in 1893. From 1895 to 1928, Bascom taught at Bryn Mawr College, where she established the Geology Department. In 1896, she became the first woman appointed to the United States Geological Survey. The Florence Bascom papers, 1862-1938, offer evidence of Bascom's career as a regarded geologist and petrographer, particularly her tenure with the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The papers allude to many of Bascom's geological interests and projects, but do not seem to offer comprehensive documentation of any. Her work for the USGS is by far the best represented of all her efforts. Charles Smith Ogden family Papers, 1732-1938 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Charles Smith Ogden (1822-1904) was a Quaker businessman, genealogist, and civic leader. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, educated in Friends' schools, and married Emma Corbit in 1848. He worked as a wholesale druggist before the Civil War, was active on the committee to elect Abraham Lincoln, and served as Consul to Quebec, Canada, 1860-1864. In 1886, he began a tour around the world, which is recounted in his travel letters, 1886-1891. This collection contains genealogical material, family correspondence, scrapbooks and memorabilia. Of particular interest are letters collected by Charles S. Smith from prominent Quaker correspondents including Elias and Edward Hicks, Lucretia Mott, Benjamin Ferris, and John Comly.

Collins Family Papers, 1797-1937 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Collins family was a Quaker family of New England and New York City. Abel Collins (1770-1834) was a birthright Quaker and a minister recorded by Hopkinton Monthly Meeting. He married Mary A. Wilbur (d. 1858) of Hopkinton in 1790, and they had eight children. One of their sons, Abel Francis Collins, was clerk of South Kingston Monthly Meeting. He had three sons who attended Friends Boarding School in Providence, Rhode Island, and continued their studies at Brown University. The collection contains extensive family correspondence (1812-1903) which covers a variety of topics, including schools and education, Quaker concerns, topical events of the day, and family life; journals of Francis W. Collins, including descriptions of his student days at Friends Boarding School in Providence; family business and financial papers; miscellaneous papers, photographs, and genealogical material on the Collins and Burdick families.

Robbins Family Papers, 1849-1934 (inclusive)

Abstract:
This small collection concerning the Robbins family, Quakers who owned the historic Seven Stars Tavern property in Salem County, New Jersey, was compiled by John H. Bourne. The Robbins family purchased the tavern about 1805, and the property remained in the family until it was purchased by John H. Bourne in 1927. The Robbins family belonged to Pilesgrove Monthly Meeting (Hicksite), which in 1928 became Woodstown Monthly Meeting. John Bourne also was a member of Woodstown Monthly Meeting. The collection contains some genealogical information on the Robbins family and correspondence and articles concerning the Seven Stars property, as well as poetry, prose, and a diary (1875) of Annie Lawrie Robbins (1828-1916), the unmarried Robbins daughter who kept house in the Seven Stars homestead, and other family material. In addition to the history of the property, the collection, particularly the diary, offers insight into the life of rural South Jersey Quakers in the late nineteenth century.

Abstract:
Alan Rowe, born in Hornchurch, Essex, England in 1891, spent his life not only in his homeland but in Australia, Egypt, Palestine and Libya in pursuit of the study of Egyptology. He excavated with C.S. Fisher at Beth Shan and George Reisner at Giza before serving as Field Director of the University of Pennsylvania Museum Expedition to Meydum, Egypt. The Meydum, Egypt Expedition records consist of eight archival boxes of records plus photographs and plans housed separately. The object registers are placed with the oversized materials.

Abstract:
The Sarah Cooper Tatum Hilles family papers house the correspondence of a Quaker family who lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Woodbury, New Jersey; Wilmington, Delaware; and other surrounding areas from approximately 1840 to 1882. A majority of the letters were written to or by Sarah Cooper Tatum Hilles; her husband, John Smith Hilles; and other Tatum or Hilles family members. There is a small sampling of assorted family papers, dating from 1825 to 1901. Included, among other items, are school report cards of William Samuel Hilles from Haverford College and an 1834 memoir of Anne Cooper Tatum, Sarah Hilles' mother. In addition, there are deeds to properties owned by the Hilles family in Delaware, New Jersey, Illinois and Pennsylvania from 1791 to 1886.

Emily Howland Family Papers, 1763-1929 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Emily Howland (1827-1929) was a Quaker humanitarian and educator who is particularly known for her work with formerly-enslaved African Americans in Virginia during and after the American Civil War. A birthright Friend, Emily Howland was the only daughter of Slocum and Hannah (Tallcot) Howland of Sherwood, N.Y. She was educated locally and for a brief period in Philadelphia, and then moved to Washington, D.C. in 1857 to teach at the Miner School for Freedmen. During the war she worked at a contraband camp in Virginia, establishing a school and coordinating relief activities. She returned to Sherwood after her father's death in 1881 and contributed time and money toward the maintenance of the Sherwood School. She continued her interest in the education of African-Americans in the south, and was also involved in woman suffrage and temperance. Kent-Barnard Family Papers, 1785/1928 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Daniel Kent, emigrated to Chester County, Pa. from Ireland, in 1785. He joined the Society of Friends (Quakers) in 1790, and married Esther Hawley in 1791. Their great-grandson Henry Simmons Kent (1833-1906) was active in the establishment of Swarthmore Monthly Meeting and the Borough of Swarthmore, Pennsylvania. The collection includes material used by Daniels' great-granddaughter Ella Kent Barnard in preparation for the writing of three books. Among these materials are genealogical charts and data, research correspondence, and original letters and documents. Notable among the latter is the correspondence between Daniel Kent and his parents, William and Ann Kent. Collection also includes diaries and journals. A manuscript entitled "The Rise of Swarthmore," by Isabella Tyson, describes the meeting of Friends in the home of her parents to discuss plans for the establishment of the College.

Abstract:
Dr. J. William White received his M.D. and Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1871. He began his career at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1874, and rose through the ranks as a surgeon and specialist in Venereal Diseases. In 1912 White was named a Trustee of the University of Pennsylvania. White was also active in Philadelphia's civic life, and made extensive annual trips to Europe. The J. William White collection consists of scrapbooks of newspaper clippings, diaries in manuscript form and typescripts of those diaries, diplomas and certificates, pamphlets and books written by and about White and his family, and letters from White's voyage on Professor Louis Agassiz's Hassler Expedition of 1872.

Nathalie Gookin papers, 1916-1920 (inclusive)

Nathalie Gookin was a student at Bryn Mawr from 1916-1920. Her collection consists of daily letters written to her parents and aunt during her time in college, as well as some letters from before she matriculated and some from after she graduated. She was admitted to Bryn Mawr with a $100 Western States Scholarship at the age of sixteen and she was the youngest person in the college. She lived in Rockefeller dorm all four years, majored in English and Latin, and graduated 5th in her class, magna cum laude. She was a member of the English and French clubs. Nathalie's letters to her parents are detailed and frank. Frequent subjects include frustrations with the workload, classes, professors, social life in the dorms, and larger campus-wide events. During her freshman and part of her sophomore year, she writes frequently about her admiration of Helen Harris, class of 1917. William Walker Stephens (1824-1902) was the son of Hannah Walker and Stephen Stephens of Chester Valley, Pennsylvania. The family were members of Valley Preparative and Radnor Monthly Meetings of Friends. William Walker Stephens worked as a businessman in Philadelphia and was married three times. His relation, J. Aubrey Anderson, was district attorney in Conshohocken, Pa. Papers include the diaries and day books of Hannah W. Stephens, 1857-1864, William W. Stephens, 1850-1902, and Annie R. Stephens, 1903. Also includes the account book of William W. Stephens, and the correspondence of J. Aubrey Anderson, chief of the Norristown division of the American Protective League, concerning their investigations.

Abstract:
Helen Clements Kirk was a student at Bryn Mawr from 1888-1892. She studied History and Economics. This collection consists of papers belonging to Helen and her family, particularly her mother, Emma Newbold Clements, and her father, Samuel Clements. Most of the collection consists of correspondence from Helen to her mother, which spans two decades, 1888-1908. In her letters from college, Helen writes about her social life, academics, professors, and events on campus. In letters written after college, from 1893 to 1908, she writes about Philadelphia social life and her new family. The fall of 1892, she married Edward Cameron Kirk and became a mother to his two children, Edith and Carrie. She and Edward had three girls of their own: Dorothy, Marcelle, and Barbara. Some of Dorothy's letters from when she was twelve and eighteen are also included. Abstract:
The Weiss family was prominent in the coal business in eastern Pennsylvania during the late 1700s and 1800s. The Weiss family collection dates from 1777 to 1916 and documents, most fully, Jacob Weiss (1750-1839), Francis White (1773-1845), and Francis White (1819-1888). The papers include diaries, geological and surveying notebooks, maps and observations; personalia and biographical notes; transcribed documents, portraits, scrapbooks, business journals, daybooks, mercantile records and account books as well as correspondence of many members of the family.

Joshua L. and Theodate L. Baily diaries, 1845-1916 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The diaries span the majority of Baily's adult life. As a young man, Baily was very involved in the Philadelphia community, and many of his early entries are related to the Philadelphia Historical Society, the Eromathean society, the Pennsylvania Prison Society, which advocated for the health and safety of incarcerated people and prison reform, The Philadelphia Society for Employment and Instruction of the Poor, and the Moyamensing House of Industry. In later entries, Baily is largely concerned with temperance efforts, prohibition, and city government. In old age, Baily's focus shifts to news of his family, and he increasingly records international affairs and political or military events, particularly in the years leading up to World War I. Two volumes, for the years 1879 and 1880, are the diaries of Theodate Lang Baily, the wife of Joshua Baily's. Her diaries largely focus on social calls and family news, as well as descriptions of her husband and children and their health.

Abstract:
Benjamin Sharp (1858-1915), a zoologist who was primarily affiliated with the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, attended Swarthmore College (1876) and earned a M.D. and Ph. D. from the University of Pennsylvania. A birthright member of the Society of Friends (Quakers), Dr. Sharp was the son of Benjamin and Hannah B. (Leedom) Sharp of the Germantown section of Philadelphia, Pa. He was married to Virginia May of Ridley, Mass. The family moved to Massachusetts in the early 20th century, and Dr. Sharp served as Representative for Nantucket to the Massachusetts Legislature. The collection consists primarily of correspondence from friends and colleagues, memorabilia from Swarthmore College, and family materials, including the diary of Rebecca Sharp.

Mary Elizabeth Garrett (1854-1915) promoted women's education by founding the Bryn Mawr School in Baltimore, Maryland, helping to finance Bryn Mawr College in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, and ensuring that women were admitted to the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Her family was prominent in Baltimore society, which allowed her to pursue her philanthropic activities. She was an active suffragist and financially helped that cause until her death in 1915. The Mary Garrett family papers houses the business and family papers of the Garrett family. This collection, which dates from 1874 to 1915, consists of correspondence, diaries, notebooks, biographical information, and business and estate records. The large number of family letters suggest a close relationship between its members.

John M. Grisom was a physician who lived and practiced in Moorestown, Burlington, New Jersey. His diary focuses on his attendance at "Friendly Study Group" meetings, a group, according to Griscom, that gathers for "the study of the influences and causes leading to the separation of 1827." Entries describe discussions had at these meetings.
