Abstract:
Jesse Herman Holmes (1864-1942), was a Quaker philosophy professor at Swarthmore College, 1900-1937. Holmes was an active participant in AFSC relief after World War I, travelling to oversee work in reconstruction throughout Europe. Holmes was the president of the National Federation of Religious Liberals and an active member of the Socialist party. Collection contains correspondence, biographical data, writings, and sermons. Also audio cassettes of reminiscences of friends, former students, and others, compiled by Albert J. Wahl, and relating to Holmes' life and career as an influential philosophy professor at Swarthmore College (1900-1937).

The Swarthmore College Dean's Office records, circa 1871-2005, include correspondence files, meeting minutes, reports, clippings from the student newspaper ("The Phoenix") and other publications, and other documents pertaining to student life on campus and administrative matters with which past Deans have been involved. In the early years of Swarthmore College, applicants applied directly to the College President and the cost of attendance was $350 per year. In the 21st century, a separately staffed Admissions Office and an Office of Financial Aid exist to support these functions. This small collection, dating from 1869 to 2003, includes admissions blanks, lists of applicants, reports, and other materials that document Swarthmore's admissions and financial aid policies and procedures.

Swarthmore College Alumni Records and Surveys, 1894-1980 (inclusive)

Abstract:
This series contains Alumni Records Office procedures documents as well as alumni surveys conducted by the College and various committees. Arthur Beardsley's 1894 survey of alumni was used as the basis for The Alumni Historical Catalogue, 1873-1892. A survey conducted by an alumni group, The Garnet Band, was used gain support for the resumption of Swarthmore-Haverford football and the weekly publication of the Phoenix. After World War I, the Dean's Office conducted a survey of the military experience of men students. Collection also contains procedures documents and computing instructions for the Alumni Records Office in the 1970s.
