Abstract:
This collection contains a brief look into the life and career of Ahron Jay Cristol, the chief judge of the Florida bankruptcy court, a lecturer in law of naval warfare, and a former US Navy aviator and lawyer in the Judge Advocate General's Corps. The collection contains series of Cristol's work as a legal scholar and bankruptcy judge, including testimony given before the US House of Representatives, various speeches given at events and lectures, and a small series of legal opinions written by Cristol, including some written in poetic verse. Also included are some audio tapes of interviews given by Cristol and a series of personal photographs commemorating his career and service.

Daniel Glosband papers, 1998-2013 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Daniel Glosband was one of the primary draftsmen of Chapter 15 of the Bankruptcy Code, which was enacted as part of The Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act (BAPCPA) in 2005. Drafting began in as early as 1997. The Daniel Glosband Papers: 2005 Bankruptcy Reform, is a small collection comprised of five series: Administrative Records; Drafts, 2000; Drafts, 1999; United States Advisory Group; and Chapter 15 Rules.

Daniel Glosband papers of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law , 1888, 1937-1938, 1978-2005 and undated (inclusive) 1994-2005 (bulk)

Abstract:
Daniel Glosband is the International Bar Association's official liaison of the Creditors Rights and Insolvency Committee to the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) and was one of the primary draftsmen of the UNCITRAL Model Law on Cross-Border Insolvency. Since its establishment in 1966, UNCITRAL has been recognized as the core legal body of the United Nations system in the field of international trade law. This collection consists of nine series covering correspondence, code references, drafts, articles, Glosband's notes, organizational reports, and Glosband's business travel documents dated 1888, 1937-1938, 1978-2005 and undated.

National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges Oral History Project, 2004-2008 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Oral History Project was begun by the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges (NCBJ) at its 2004 Annual Meeting. The purpose of the project was to record interviews in which past presidents of the NCBJ reminisced about the organization and the role they played in it. The project later expanded to encompass oral histories of prominent bankruptcy judges. The collection chiefly includes oral histories recorded with past presidents of the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges. Accruals to this project include prominent members of the NCBJ who may or may not be former presidents.

Abstract:
Henry J. Sommer is one of the leading figures in bankruptcy and consumer law. Born in 1949 in Rochester, New York, Sommer received his JD cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1974. After graduating from Harvard, he worked for Community Legal Services in Philadelphia as Project Head of its Consumer Law Project until 1996. In addition to his role with Community Legal Services, Sommer has served on bankruptcy rules committees and worked as editor-in-chief of Collier on Bankruptcy. The Henry J. Sommer Papers, 1966-2014, include National Bankruptcy Conference papers, materials from Continuing Legal Education seminars and other meetings at which Sommer lectured, copies of published manuscripts written by Sommer, and other material related to Sommer's work with consumer law and legal reform.

Abstract:
Harry Dixon Jr. (1944-2006), a lawyer from Nebraska, wanted to form an organization with the dual purpose of providing Congress with unbiased views on legislation and creating an institution that could keep the bankruptcy community aware of legislative activities affecting them. In February 1982, Dixon incorporated under Nebraska law this new organization which was to be called the American Bankruptcy Institute (ABI). The records of the American Bankruptcy Institute document two main areas of the organization: the history and operating activities of the American Bankruptcy Institute and the organization's professional activities, publications, and research on bankruptcy related issues. The materials date from 1982-2013, with the bulk from 1985-1996. Judge Judith K. Fitzgerald has more than 25 years of experience as a Bankruptcy Judge, having presided over matters in the Western District of Pennsylvania (where she was chief judge for five years) as well as in the District of Delaware, the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. This collection is comprised of records relating to the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges. The materials date from 1972 to 2011, and are divided into four series: Administration; Federal Employees' Group Life Insurance; Mediation; Meetings.

Abstract:
Judge David H. Adams is a retired American bankruptcy attorney and judge, having practiced privately many years and served as a US Bankruptcy Court judge. This collection includes his personal materials ranging from 1984-2006, consisting mainly of materials concerning the National Conference of Bankruptcy judges, in which Judge Adams was heavily involved, on its Board of Governors from 1996-1999, its secretary in 2000, and its president in 2004. The collection includes much correspondence between NCBJ members from 1984-2006, event and conference data from many of the yearly NCBJ conferences, as well as budget, committee, and resolution data from those years, illustrating the planning processes and behind the scenes information about the NCBJ and its activities, members, and meetings.

Conrad B. Duberstein collection, 2005 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Conrad B. Duberstein (1915-2005) earned his undergraduate degree from Brooklyn College in 1938 and his J.D. from St. John's University Law School in 1942. From 1943 to 1945, Duberstein served in the United States Army. When he left the Army following the end of World War II, Duberstein joined the Brooklyn law firm of Schwartz, Rudin, and Duberstein (the latter partner named after his uncle). In 1971, he became a partner at Otterbourg, Steindler, Houston, and Rosen, where he remained until his retirement in 1981. In 1981, he was appointed to the Eastern District Bankruptcy Court of New York. He was appointed that court's Chief Judge in 1984, a position he held for the rest of his career. In 1991, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from St. John's University Law School. The collection, 2005, contains 5 DVDs of footage honoring the career of Duberstein.

Abstract:
The Honorable Samuel L. Bufford is a former United States Bankruptcy Judge in the Central District of California, where he served from 1985 to 2010 and presided over nearly 100,000 cases. After graduating with a B.A. from Wheaton College in Illinois, Judge Bufford earned his law degree from the University of Michigan, where he was an editor of the Michigan Law Review and of the Journal of Law Reform and a Ph.D in Philosophy from the University of Texas. He practiced corporate, bankruptcy, antitrust, securities, and other types of business law in Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, San Francisco, and New York between 1974 and his appointment to the bench, except for a stint teaching law and urban planning at The Ohio State University between 1975 and 1977. A scholar of U.S. and comparative insolvency law, Bufford has authored one book, United States International Insolvency Law (Oxford University Press, 2009), and numerous law review articles and more than 75 published opinions. This collection of papers contains documents from Judge A. Thomas Small's office between the years 1982 and 2009. Documents include correspondence, handwritten notes, research material, testimonies and drafted legislation. Small actively participated in the legislative process, and much of the collecion covers legislative issues such as the Marathon decision, the creation of Chapter 12 bankruptcy, the creation of Bankruptcy Appellate Panels, and the debate over Bankruptcy Administrators vs. Bankruptcy Trustees. Also included are papers documenting the long range planning process of the United States Judicial Conference and the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges.

Judge Joyce Bihary papers, 1999-2009 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Judge Bihary received her Juris Doctorate from the University of Michigan Law School in 1975. From 1987-2003, she served as a judge for the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Northern District of Georgia. In 2003, Judge Bihary was sworn in as Chief Judge of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Northern District of Georgia. She served this position from 2003 until her retirement in May of 2012. The Judge Joyce Bihary Papers, 1999-2009, includes materials created, collected, and received by Judge Bihary from two periods of her career. First, materials from the 1999 Debtor Education Program in Atlanta, Georgia which contains information regarding American bankruptcy in the mid to late 1990's. Second, the collection includes information regarding the proposed mortgage "cramdown" legislation specifically referencing H.R. 1106 during 2008-2009. Randall J. Newsome attended Boston University for his Bachelor of Arts in 1972 and the University of Cincinnati College of Law for his Juris Doctor in 1975. With 28 years of experience serving as a settlement and bankruptcy judge, Judge Newsome is best known for his intelligent and pragmatic approach to resolving complex matters and he is frequently sought out as a national speaker on topics related to bankruptcy. Judge Newsome devoted much of his career handling local and national bankruptcy issues. Not only was Judge Newsome vocal about bankruptcy reform for consumers, but he was also actively involved with the ongoing legislative battles over bankruptcy reform, particularly during the ever changing Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act (BAPCPA) in the late 1990s. Abstract:
The Judge Joe Lee papers, 1961-2012, consist of material from Lee's active involvement in bankruptcy organizations and legislation. Joe Lee received his law degree from the University of Kentucky in 1955. He served as counsel to the Congressional Labor Subcommittee for the U.S. House of Representatives before being appointed a U.S. Bankruptcy Judge on September 1, 1961. He was one of the longest serving bankruptcy judges in the nation and played a pivotal role in the enactment of the Bankruptcy Reform Act of 1978. The collection includes correspondence, minutes, and reports from the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges, drafts of bills and correspondence regarding bankruptcy legislation, and Lee's writings on the history of bankruptcy law.
