Abstract:: The American businessman John T. Diebold, founder of the Diebold Group, Inc. and author of the management classic Automation, was a graduate of Swarthmore College (class of 1949). This collection consists of 89 scrapbooks carefully constructed by Diebold to document his life and the major events of his business career and personal life.

Abstract:: John Russell Hayes (1866-1945) was a Quaker educator, poet, and Librarian of Swarthmore College, 1906-1927 and Friends Historical Library of Swarthmore College, 1927-1935. The collection contains letters received by Hayes, 1887-1936, diaries covering the period 1880-1935, and miscellaneous papers including an album of collected manuscript samples of contemporary poets. The diaries include poetry and cover personal and Swarthmore College activities and concerns.

Joanna Wharton Lippincott Correspondence, 1877-1938 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Joanna Wharton Lippincott (1858-1938) was the eldest daughter of Joseph Wharton, prominent Philadelphia Quaker businessman and philanthropist. She was a lifelong Quaker and served on the Board of Managers of Swarthmore College. The collection consists primarily of family correspondence, and the majority of the correspondence is from Anna Lovering Wharton, her mother.

Abstract:: This collection contains the papers of the Darlington family of Delaware County, Pennsylvania, and Woodstown, New Jersey. Quakers with strong ties to Swarthmore College, the family was involved in education, social and peace concerns, and businesses in the Philadelphia area. Charles J. Darlington (1894-1966) served as Clerk of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends during the reunification of the two Philadelphia Yearly Meetings. The collection includes family correspondence relating to the Darlington, Shortlidge, Gause, and Palmer families as well as genealogical research and 20th century Quaker activities.

Abstract:: At its inception, Swarthmore College included a large preparatory department, but it began to play a secondary role by the early 1880s. In 1893, the preparatory division separated from the College and continued as a private institution, Swarthmore Preparatory School.
