Abstract:: The Society of Friends or Quakers (the terms are synonymous) was founded in the middle of the seventeenth century in England by George Fox and others. The Friends Historical Library has collected Quaker disciplines since its founding in 1871. FHL is also the official repository for the records of seven American yearly meetings.

Abstract:: The bulk of the collection is epistles, sorted roughly by topic. William Wood, the Clerk of New York Yearly Meeting who arranged the collection, was particularly interested in the issues of slavery, freedmen, peace testimony, and religious education. Also included are correspondence, Quaker documents, and miscellaneous papers. Correspondents include Moses Brown, William Rickman, John Pemberton.

New York Friends Service Committee records, ca. 1917-1922 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The New York Friends Service Committee was established in 1917 following an appeal by New York Yearly Meeting to assist the American Friends Service Committee in its clothing appeal for European war relief. By 1922, the focus had changed to famine relief particularly for Russia, and the Committee was encouraged to work directly through AFSC. This small collection contains minutes, annual reports, and financial records.

Abstract:: Margery Rubin was a Quaker involved with a variety of Friends organizations including New York Yearly Meeting, the American Friends Service Committee, and Friends Journal. This collection consists primarily of black and white photographs, with a few color photographs, from the 1980s and 1990s. There are portraits of individuals and group portraits, mostly from New York Yearly Meeting sessions. There are also photos of Powell House (New York Yearly Meeting's retreat center) and some other miscellaneous shots.

Quaker Emergency Service lectures, 1944

Abstract:: The Quaker Emergency Service was founded in January 1942 by members of the combined Peace and Service Committees of the two New York Monthly Meetings. In the spring of 1944, the Service sponsored a series of lectures focusing on adolescent psychology which were held in the French Institute building, 22 East 60th Street, New York, New York.

Ross Flanagan Papers, 1962-1993 (inclusive) 1964-1978 (bulk)

Abstract:: Ross Flanagan (1934- ), is Quaker pacifist and activist, has been involved in many Quaker-sponsored projects, peace, and civil rights activities. In the 1950s he served on the staff of the American Friends Service Committee. He was an early protestor against the Vietnam war and worked with A Quaker Action Group in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In the 1970s Flanagan was involved in neighborhood revitalization projects in West Philadelphia.
