Abstract:
William Coates's diaries detail his time at Haverford College and following his graduation. He writes about the weather, academic studies, weekly collections, the Everett Society, exercise, his letter correspondence, and trips with his friends and family. He begins writing about the Civil War on April 14, 1861, detailing Fort Sumter's surrender and evacuation, remarking on the "great excitement" and formation of a mob in Philadelphia. He later remarks on Civil War events such as the Baltimore Riots and the Battles of Harrisburg and Gettysburg. Coates continues writing of his life at Haverford, describing his classes, flute playing, friends, religious life, weather, health, clubs, cricket matches, and family, providing insight into Haverford during the Civil War. Abstract:
James Estes Baker, Haverford College class of 1956, enjoyed a lengthy career as a member of the United States diplomatic corps, including a period of service for the United Nations. The collection offers insight into Baker's life and diplomatic career, with a large quantity of materials relating to the media scrutiny occasioned by his appointment as the first Black US diplomat to serve in South Africa during Apartheid. Collected materials include biographical information, personal correspondence, periodicals and official reports related to Baker's diplomatic work, photographs, and a scrapbook containing newspaper clippings pertaining to his South Africa appointment. A majority of the materials are dated from 1972 to 1973, at the beginning of his appointment to the Pretoria, South Africa embassy.

Charles Roberts autograph albums, 1805-1867 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The smaller autograph albums contain signatures of Haverford College students. In the 1860-1862 autograph album, most signatures are accompanied with respective hometowns and the date of the signature; one signature includes a quote. In the 1860-1864 album, there are pictures for most signatories, but few hometown entries; one signature includes a quote. The larger 1860 autograph album is comprised of miscellaneous historical documents dating from the early-to-mid 19th century. Includes military summons, letters, trade documents, and assorted signatures. Several pages are blank and many appear to have once held additional documentation and portraits, but only glue on/holes in pages indicate their former presence. Materials not arranged chronologically and appear to have no discernable order.
