William Canby was born in Wilmington, Delaware, on April 11, 1822, to James Canby and Elizabeth Roberts. He entered Haverford College in 1837 and left in 1839. While at Haverford, he was involved with the Haverford Loganian Society and the Penn Literary Society, being a teller in the latter. He married Ann Tatnall on April 30, 1897. He was a farmer. He died on January 15, 1897, in Wilmington, Delaware. Bibliographical information from "Biographical Catalog of the Matriculates of Haverford College... 1833-1922" (1922).

The commonplace book contains notes from friends of Roberts Canby, mostly his peers at Haverford College. The entries include prose or poetry, a signature, the hometown of the signer, their college, and the date. The book itself is a published book with illustrations at the top of every page.
