Roberts M. Canby was born in Wilmington, Delaware, on April 7, 1819, to James Canby and Elizabeth Roberts. He entered Haverford College in 1833 and left the same year. Canby was one of the twenty-one students present at Haverford on opening day. He died on September 25, 1854, in Wilmington, Delaware. Bibliographical information from "Biographical Catalog of the Matriculates of Haverford College... 1833-1922" (1922).

The commonplace book contains notes from friends of Roberts Canby, mostly his peers at Haverford College. The entries include prose or poetry, a signature, the hometown of the signer, their college, and the date. The book itself is a published book with illustrations at the top of every page.
