Louise Heron Blair Daura collection, 1918-1927 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Louise Heron Blair Daura (Bryn Mawr College 1927) was married to the Catalan painter Pierre Daura. He joined the Spanish Republican Army in 1937, and Louise wrote a series of letters to her family about going to visit Pierre while he was on leave in Barcelona in 1938. These letters vividly describe the living conditions and damage done to the towns of Spain during the Spanish Civil War. The collection includes letters to Louise while she was at Bryn Mawr as well as letters written to her from family and friends while she traveled in Europe during the 1920s. There are a series of letters that she wrote to her family while living in France after her marriage. The letters give rich descriptions of the life of an American living in Europe before and during the Spanish Civil War. The collection also contains Louise's essays and other writings from Bryn Mawr, giving a sense of what Bryn Mawr was like in the mid-1920s.

Pamela Colman Smith collection, 1896-1900, 1896-1900 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Pamela Colman Smith was an author, illustrator and stage designer. Born in London, she spent most of her youth in England and Jamaica. She was educated at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, which she left in 1897. In 1898, she moved to New York City, where she began selling her illustrations and exhibiting her work in galleries. She returned to England in 1900, where she designed sets for the London stage, and continued to exhibit her artwork. A significant part of Smith's career consisted of illustrating children's books and collections of folk tales, ballads and verse. Her published works include Widdicombe Fair (1899), Annancy Stories (1899), The Golden Vanity and the Green Bed (1899), and Chim-Chim: Folk Stories from Jamaica (1905). Works by other authors that she illustrated include Christmas Carol, by Edwin Waugh (1898), and In Chimney Corners: Merry Tales of Irish Folk-lore, by Seumas MacManus (1899). Abstract:: Genealogical and biographical documents for Anne Williams Kierstead, BMC 1943, and her mother, Helen Elizabeth Jones Williams, BMC 1906. Included are: letters from Kierstead to her family while she taught and traveled in Turkey in the late 1940's, a diary and an autobiographical account of Williams' travel in Europe during the outbreak of WWI, and a genealogy of the family compiled by Kierstead in 1976.

Abstract:: Mary Meigs was born on April 27, 1917, and served in the U. S. Navy during World War II as a WAVE. She later became a painter, writer, and activist for elderly lesbians, and she had close ties with several other painters, writers, activists, and social commentators throughout her life. The collection is divided into four sections: Correspondence, Writings, Artwork, and Other Materials and includes letters from throughout her life, journals, manuscripts, research, reviews, and her artwork.

Phyllis Walter Goodhart Gordan papers, 1913-1994 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Phyllis Walter Goodhart (1913-1994) was a graduate of Bryn Mawr College (BA 1935) and a Latin and Greek scholar. While at Bryn Mawr, she developed a life-long interest in the works of the Italian humanists, especially Poggio Bracciolini. Mrs. Gordan's extensive scholarly papers reflect her many years of careful study of Italian humanism. Over the years she had acquired a notable collection of published and unpublished research materials from which she generated her meticulous notes on literally hundreds of medieval and Renaissance scholars and events. A majority of the collection is bibliographic and biographic notes on Renaissance leaders, scholars, and ecclesiastics. Additionally the collection contains a catalog of humanist manuscripts in European libraries, notes on Ernst Walser's archive of research materials, and a concordance for the numeration of Poggio' letters to Nicolaus de Niccolis in the editions of Gordan, Tonelli, Wilmanns, and Rüegg (unpublished). Claud Lovat Fraser and Grace Crawford Lovat Fraser collections, 1906-1923 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Claud Lovat Fraser was born in London on May 15, 1890 to Florence Margaret Fraser, an amateur artist, and Claud Fraser, a city solicitor. He became a clerk at his father's law firm but left in 1911 to seriously pursue art. In 1914, Fraser enlisted with the Inns of Court Officer Training Corps and was quickly commissioned to the 14th Battalion of the Durham Light Infantry. He suffered from poor health and was eventually discharged in 1919. In 1916, he met Grace Crawford and the two were married on February 6, 1917. Miss Crawford was born in Paris in 1889, daughter of Theron Clark Crawford, an American entrepreneur, and a highly trained amateur pianist. During the four years after their marriage, until Fraser's death in 1921, the two worked jointly on a number of theatre projects and had one daughter, Helen Catherine Adeline Lovat Fraser, born in 1918. A.E. Housman papers, 1859-1936 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Alfred Edward Housman, the English poet and classicist, was born on March 26, 1859 near Bromsgrove, Worcestershire. He was appointed to the Chair of Greek and Latin at University College, London in 1892. Housman soon began writing the series of poems which was eventually published as "A Shropshire Lad" in 1896 and later in 1922,"Last Poems" was published. In 1911, he became the professor of Latin at Trinity College, Cambridge where he taught for more than 30 years. Housman passed away from heart disease in April of 1936. This collection includes family related materials, notes on his famous lecture "The Name and Nature of Poetry", photographs, general correspondence and writings.

Susan Walker FitzGerald papers, 1875-1924 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Susan Walker FitzGerald (1871-1943) was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts. While at Bryn Mawr, class of 1893, she founded the Student Government Association and graduated with a degree in history/political science. Susan W. FitzGerald is best known for her commitment to the women's suffrage movement and her involvement in progressive political organizations. The papers are arranged chronologically beginning with a few letters, postcards and memorabilia from Susan's childhood and ending with letters from the early 1920's, including letters pertaining to her term in the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1923-1925.The vast majority of letters are between Susan and Richard, many of them from Richard to Susan.

Theresa Helburn collection, 1900s (inclusive)

Abstract:: Bryn Mawr alumna Theresa Helburn (B.A. 1908) had a long and distinguished career behind the scenes on Broadway, and made important contributions to the professions of film and television from the 1930s to the 1950s. As a producer with New York's Theatre Guild from 1919, Helburn served as a literary manager and casting director, before becoming a co-producer, with Lawrence Langner. The Theatre Guild specialized in bringing the highest-quality drama of Europe and America to Broadway stages. Helburn's responsibilities were wide-ranging, including everything from vetting scripts, to casting plays, to fund-raising, to leading advertising and marketing campaigns. The Theresa Helburn Theater Collection includes over 1400 photographs, 160 playscripts, 139 ground plans, 171 theater programs, and numerous advertisements and other theatrical ephemera. Margaret Ayer Barnes papers, 1920-1938 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Margaret Ayer Barnes (1886-1967) was a graduate of Bryn Mawr College (class of 1907). She was a novelist, playwright, and short story writer. In her three years of service as the College's alumnae director, beginning in 1920, Barnes helped to organize the Summer School for Women Workers in Industry. Barnes' short stories were first published in 1926, and she continued to write consistently throughout the next decade. Barnes is especially well known for her contribution to the critically acclaimed stage production of Edith Wharton's Age of Innocence, as well as her novel Years of Grace (1930), for which Barnes won the Pulitzer Prize. Ralph Hodgson and Aurelia Bolliger Hodgson papers, 1896-1984 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Very little is known about the early life of Ralph Hodgson (1871-1962), a British poet. In the 1890s, he worked as a newspaper and magazine illustrator, signing some of his works 'Yorick', and, in 1913, founded "The Sign of the Flying Fame" publishers along with Claud Lovat Fraser and Holbrook Jackson. Hodgson published a variety of poetry volumes prior to joining that army at the beginning of World War I. In 1923, he accepted a position as a lecturer in English at Sendai University in Japan. It was here that he met his third wife, Aurelia Bolliger (1898-1984), an American born teacher at the Women's College of Sendai. The couple faced a variety of difficulties during the early years of their marriage, including Aurelia's young age, loss of job because of her relationship with Ralph, and her family's struggle to accept their marriage. Constance "Zinnia" Maravell papers, 1979-1995 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Constance Maravell was a Bryn Mawr graduate of the class of 1965. In the years follower her time at graduate school at the University of Chicago, Maravell delved into the world of art. She adopted the name Zinnia to represent her artistic identiy, and has exhibited her work of high art photography in the Washington D.C. area numerous times. Zinnia's work has been recognized and praised in a number of newspapers and newsletters. This collection contains the clippings from the articles that acknowledged her work, as well as an assortment of pamphlets and booklets summarizing her pieces in exhibitions, and a few select photographs taken at one of Zinnia's exhibition openings.

Abstract:: Karl Detlev Jessen (1872-1919) was a professor of German Literature at Bryn Mawr College from 1910 to 1919. He was involved with the Socialist movement in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The Karl D. Jessen papers house the records of Karl D. Jessen. This collection dates from 1872 to 1980, with bulk dates of 1890 to 1917. This collection consists mostly of correspondence between Jessen and his family, friends, and colleagues, in addition to manuscripts and manuscript drafts, clippings, scrapbooks, bibliography cards of Jessen's research, and other ephemera.

Abstract:: Dorothy Foster was a student at Bryn Mawr from 1900-1904. The papers consist of her letters written by Foster to her mother, Genevieve Stimpson, during her junior and senior years of college (1902-1904). The letters primarily concern her school work, her duties as class president, news about the college, guests she hosted, and lectures she attended. They are arranged in folders by date, with the exception of the first folder of miscellaneous items including academic records and an essay about May Day. Dorothy Foster was born in 1883 in Salem, Massachusetts, daughter of Genevieve Stimpson and James M. Foster. She majored in English and Philosophy and held the offices of Senior Class President in '04, secretary to the Philosophy Club in '03- '04, and membership in the English Club in '03-'04. Frances Arnold Family Letters, 1893-1902 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Frances Arnold was born in New York City in 1874, daughter of Francis and Augusta Arnold. After graduating the Brearly School, she attended Bryn Mawr College from 1893 to 1895, affiliating herself with the class of 1897. Upon leaving the College, she attended French finishing school and traveled abroad. In 1899 she returned to New York to teach mathematics at Brearly. Except for a brief stint supervising women building torpedos during World War I, Arnold remained at Brearly until 1930. She then retired to New Hampshire, where she was involved with community affairs. The Frances Arnold family letters comprise a collection of the personal correspondence of Frances Arnold, Bryn Mawr College class of 1897. The letters in the collection range from 1895 to 1902. The bulk of the collection is personal correspondence between Arnold and her family and Arnold's personal memorabilia.

George Aaron Barton papers, 1859-1949 (inclusive)

Abstract:: George Aaron Barton taught at Haverford College as a lecturer for two years and at the same time joied the Bryn Mawr faculty as Associate Professor of Biblical literature and Semitic Languages, 1891. He taught at Bryn Mawr continuously as Professor of Biblical Literature and Semitic Languages until 1922 when he joined the faculty of the University of Pennsylcania as Professor of Semitic Languages. In addition, Dr. Barton was director of the American School for Oriental Research at Jerusalem, 1902-03, and at Baghdad, 1921-34; also Professor of New Testament Literature and Laguage at the Divinity School of the Protestant Episcopal Church in Philadelphia,, 1921-37. An acknowledged minister of the Society of Friends (Orothodox) from 1879-1918, Barton was ordained as a Deacon in the Episcopal Church in 1918 and priest the following year. Abstract:: Albert Winslow Barker served as the Director of Art Education in the Public School District of Wilmington, Delaware, between 1921 and 1929. 1927, at age 53, he apprenticed himself to one of the masters of American lithography, Bolton Brown. Barker spent the rest of his life in the practice of lithography, furthering the development of that art.
