Abstract:
Miss Leslie's Magazine was a monthly women's magazine of literature and fashion published in Philadelphia from January of 1843 to July of 1846, when it was absorbed by Godey's Lady's Book. This book contains volumes 1 and 2 of Miss Leslie's Magazine, dating from January 1843 to December 1843; each volume contains 6 issues. Eliza Leslie was a Philadelphia-born writer of popular cookbooks, children's stories, and guides for women on domestic life and work. Miss Leslie's Magazine incorporates Leslie's recipes and instructions for maintaining a household with fashion plates, essays, and stories and poems from contributing writers such as N.P. Willis, Lydia H. Sigourney, T. S. Arthur, Park Benjamin, and Miss Leslie.

Nineteenth-century English broadside ballads, circa 1800s (inclusive)

Abstract:
Nineteenth-century London printers of broadside ballad sheets supplied both traditional and original songs to "hawkers and the trade," as well as selling to customers in their own shops. Most compositions are anonymous (though their authors are sometimes named or identifiable) and they enjoyed a wide audience. This collection contains 49 publications from a variety of printers, including the heirs of John Pitts and James Catnach (Elizabeth Hodges and Anne Ryle, respectively) and Henry P. Such. Researchers interested in nineteenth-century popular song or the London printing trade will find this collection of use.

Colonel T. Allston Brown history of the American stage notebooks, circa 1905 (inclusive)

Abstract:
T. Allston Brown, was a theater critic, newspaper editor, talent agent and theater historian who lived from 1836 to 1918. Brown spent the majority of his adult life in Philadelphia, PA and published extensively on the history of American theater. The collection includes five bound volumes containing handwritten notes and newspaper clippings concerning the history of the American stage from 1749 to 1905. The volumes are organized by geographic location. The first three volumes are respectively focused on Boston, Philadelphia, and New York City. The fourth volume includes information on Ohio, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, greater Pennsylvania, New Jersey, greater New York, and Rhode Island. The fifth volume includes information on Brooklyn.

This notebook, which is actually three notebooks bound together, was likely owned by dentist Robert Waller Bragg II, D.D.S. (1872-1956), of Richmond, Virginia. The notebook contains manuscripts or treatises-- possibly speeches or lectures-- on methodology concerning dental crown work. Sections are titled: "Crown Work," "Treatment of Exposed Pulps," "Bridge-Work (Continued)," "Chemistry," and "Preparation of the Mouth for Artificial Dentures." The third volume also includes a section titled, "Condensed Facts Concerning Metals," that features tables of technical information.

Hiester H. Muhlenberg and Wellington Smith Mason notes on lectures delivered by Drs. Nathaniel Chapman, Judson Daland, and J.K. Mitchell at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School, 1832, 1894-1895 (inclusive)

This notebook contains lecture material transcribed by two different students at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. One portion of the volume contains notes taken by Hiester H. Muhlenberg in 1832; the later material was written by Wellington Smith Mason during two separate courses of lectures between 1894 and 1895. The notes taken by Muhlenberg record a series of lectures delivered by Dr. Nathaniel Chapman on hemorrhages, fevers, cardiac disease and nervous disorders. The notes taken by Mason, decades later, document Dr. Judson Daland's lectures on physical diagnosis and Dr. J.K. Mitchell's lectures on symptomatology.
