John James Audubon (1785-1851) was a French-American ornithologist, naturalist, and painter known for his The Birds of North America. Mill Grove, the first home of John James Audubon in America, was sold to Montgomery County in 1951 and turned into a museum. The John James Audubon Center at Mill Grove collection, 1726-2002, contains miscellaneous photographs, pamphlets, documents, scrapbooks, and other materials relating to the Mill Grove Audubon Center, the Audubon Society, the property at Mill Grove before and after Audbudon occupancy, and the Audubon family.

J. d'Arcy Northwood papers, 1910-1966 (inclusive)

Abstract:

John d'Arcy Northwood (1897-1972) was the first director/curator of the John James Audubon Center at Mill Grove in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. An avid, life-long birder, he was the founder and president of the Audubon Society of Hawaii, authored Familiar Hawaiian Birds (1940), and worked for the National Audubon Society in Florida and New Jersey as well as Pennsylvania. The heart of the J. d'Arcy Northwood papers, 1910-1966, are five bird-watching journals. There is also an index to some of the journals, a clippings scrapbook, and two published pamphlets in the collection.

Mumbower family papers, 1927-1950 (inclusive)

Abstract:

Henry Mumbower (1826-1892) and his wife Catherine Maurer Mumbower (1828-1898) settled in Gwynedd Valley, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania in the mid 19th century. After purchasing a mill in the area in 1858, the family operated a grist mill, now known as Mumbower's Mill, for over half a century. Henry and Catherine had eight children. The Mumbower family papers, 1927-1950, contain a Mumbower family photograph album, a family reunion binder, and a few scans of Mumbower family photographs.

Waln family papers, 1759-1888 (inclusive)

Abstract:

The Walns were a family of prominent Quaker merchants in Philadelphia. In 1774, Richard Waln, moved the family to Crosswicks, in Monmouth County, New Jersey, where he purchased "Walnford" and established a flour mill. The Waln family papers document primarily the family's business activities. Richard Waln (1737-1808) who was engaged in the milling business in Walnford, New Jersey, also was involved with financial concerns in Philadelphia. His nephew Robert (1765-1836) was the director of the Philadelphia Insurance Company from 1804 to 1813. Robert a successful merchant, joined into a partnership with his cousin Jesse, and traded with England and the West Indies, and later with East India and China. The collection consists largely of correspondence and financial records.

Incorporated by William Wagner (1796-1885) in 1855, the Wagner Free Institute of Science is a natural history museum and educational institution in Philadelphia that is dedicated to providing free public education in the sciences. The Robert Chambers collection on William Wagner and the history of the Wagner Free Institute of Science includes material collected by Chambers and contains correspondence; genealogical and family information; documents on William Wagner's early business career with Stephen Girard, the Lennoxville Steam Saw Mill and Snowden and Wagner; Wagner Free Instute of Science financial and operational material; and personal material from Sydney T. Skidmore, a member of the Board. This collection will almost certainly not provide a researcher with all the information needed—instead, this is an excellent starting point. Covering nearly 1,400 acres of the 10,000 acre Fairmount Park System, Wissahickon Valley Park epitomizes the breadth of resource available within the city of Philadelphia. Primarily a naturalist landscape, the parklands also support a variety of recreational activities and are home to a number of nationally important structural sites. Wissahickon Valley Park is located along the Wissahickon Creek, and has been a popular location with visitors for over a century and a half. Known best for its craggy rock formations, steep cliffs, and flowing waterway, the park provides an extremely rustic location just minutes from downtown Philadelphia. Popular natural locations within the park include the Devil’s Pool, Forbidden Drive, Livezey Rock and Lover’s Leap. Raymond J. Middleton bird banding papers, 1928-1979 (inclusive)

Abstract:

Raymond J. Middleton (1898-1980) was a well-known naturalist, conservationist, and civic leader of West Norriton, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. He was engaged in bird banding for over 40 years, during which time he banded an estimated 57,000 birds. At the core of the Raymond J. Middleton bird banding papers, 1928-1979, are seven bird banding journals. There is also a quantity of form-letter correspondence with the United States Department of the Interior regarding banded birds data, correspondence with various other bird banding associations, and reprints of an ornithology article by Middleton (1969).

John James Audubon (1785-1851) was a French-American ornithologist, naturalist, and painter. His The Birds of North America, written and lushly illustrated by Audubon himself, is considered one of the finest ornithological works ever completed. The Audubon-Bakewell-Shaffer family papers, circa 1828-1858, contain letters, manuscripts, and other items from members of the Audubon-Bakewell-Shaffer family. The bulk of the letters are between William Gifford Bakewell and his wife Maria or his sister Lucy Bakewell Audubon.
