Abstract:

Born on February 21, 1928 in Jacksonville Florida, Leslie Hunter Whitten was a Hearst newspaper reporter for the Washington Post, an associate on Jack Anderson's newspaper column, and accomplished novelist. He graduated from Lehigh University in 1950. This collection documents various stages of Whitten's life, especially the years in Washington DC as a journalist. Letters, documents, notes, photographs, etc. relating to Les Whitten's early years, schooling, and work as a Hearst reporter, Jack Anderson associate, and novelist. Includes correspondence with parents through college and military service, and letters to his family. Abstract:

An early 20th Century scrapbook containing miscellaneous household tidbits of knowledge, medical remedies, scientific inventions and mechanical observations compiled by Frank Ellwanger, a citizen of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Personal observations and notations as well as articles clipped from newspapers, magazines and brochures are included. With its various recipes for making home remedies and references to do-it-yourself solutions, the volume compares to a receipt book or commonplace book of an earlier age.

Philadelphia Surveyor John H. Levering Ledger, 1873-1888 (inclusive)

Abstract:

This folio itemizes an interesting view into the northwestward expansion of the City of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in an era of growth in the mid-19th century. What is shown by the surveying entries is the incorporation, by the 1854 Act of Consolidation, of Roxborough Township and the Borough of Manayunk into the City of Philadelphia's 21st Ward. A list of landowners requiring surveying services reflects on Lehigh University's collection of 18th and 19th century industrial collections with client names such as Wetherill, Packer, Reading Railroad, Pennsylvania Railroad and the Schuylkill Navigation System. Also, a surprisingly large list of women landowners is displayed within the ledger entries.
