Abstract:

The Mütter Museum was founded in 1856 when Dr. Thomas Dent Mütter bequeathed his personal medical museum to the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. From Thomas Mütter's collection, the museum grew as a noted repository for unique collections of medical specimens across the world. The Mütter Museum records document the history of this noted institution from 1887 until 2006. Included in the collection are catalogs of item acquisitions, visitor records, event records, and the papers of several museum curators. Researchers interested in the acquisition policies of the museum, as well as records of events and exhibits held at the Mutter should consult this collection. Additionally, the papers of Gretchen Worden are housed in this collection. The "Gretchen Worden" series contains many of her lectures, administrative material, and date books while serving as Curator and Director from 1982 until 2004. Abstract:

The office of the Secretary of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia was created during the organization of the College in 1787. The Secretary is the appointed officer of record. The position's original duties were to record the minutes and transactions of the College and preserve its documents and correspondence. This collection contains correspondence of the Office of the Secretary of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia from the 1890s to 1908, along with several letters dating to the 1830s and 1958. Of note is the resignation of Thomas Parke, dated 27 August 1833, from the Office of the President. This collection also holds the Secretary's annual reports, 1934-1940, as well as a file regarding the Chana Medical School project (1963).

Soloman Bush daybook, 1789-1792 (inclusive)

Abstract:

This daybook contains medical observations and recipes from Philadelphia resident, Dr. Solomon Bush. The son of Mathias Bush, Dr. Solomon Bush practiced medicine around the time of the Revolutionary War despite not having any formal training. In addition to his medical case studies and remedy recipes, his daybook also includes a memorandum of his marriage to Ann, the daughter of Christopher Marshall on April 2, 1791. The announcement of the birth of his son, Nathan Marshall Bush, follows on February 23rd, 1792. This collection was discovered during a survey in the summer and fall of 2015.

Sturgis Photograph Collection, undated

Abstract:

The Sturgis Photograph Collection was donated to the College in the early 1980s by Doctors Katharine R. and Samuel B. Sturgis. It contains a large number of the College's pictures and oversize documents (diplomas, certificates, etc.). The subjects of the materials range from portraits of physicians, early hospital buildings, group photographs of medical societies, and class photographs of medical school students, to lecture matriculation cards and medical illustrations. Researchers should note that the collection contains a wide variety of early photographs of the College's buildings, both the previous building at 13th & Locust Streets, and the present building and 19 S. 22nd Street. Over 100 portfolios and bound volumes are included. The collection was processed soon after acquistion. Records of Continuing Medical Education Programs, 1973-1981 (inclusive)

Abstract:

During the 1970s, there was an emphasis on continuing medical education (CME) for practicing licensed medical doctors. Lifetime licenses to practice medicine were being replaced by limited time licenses that required renewal. In order to renew their state issued medical licenses, doctors were required to obtain continuing education credits. Beginning in 1974, the College of Physicians of Philadelphia offered symposiums, distance education programs, courses in Philadelphia, and additional programs. These programs include PREP, PREP CV, and the Emergency Medicine program. The College's CME programs ended in 1980 and 1981. The Records of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia Continuing Education Programs date from 1973 to 1981 and consist of correspondence and records pertaining to continuing education programs, including the Basic Science Section, FOCUS, College Night, PREP, PREP CV, CME, Emergency Medicine, and other programs. Paul E. Bechet papers, 1899-1947 (inclusive)

Abstract:

Paul Esnard Bechet was born July 28, 1881 and died January 3, 1962. In 1903, he received his medical degree from Tulane University. Early in his career, Bechet assisted during the yellow fever epidemic of 1905 in New Orleans. From 1909 to 1934, Bechet worked at the New York Skin and Cancer Hospital as a clinical assistant, assistant physician, and physician. In his later life, he owned a private medical practice in Elizabeth, New Jersey. The Paul E. Bechet papers consist of the personal papers of Paul Esnard Bechet, M.D. (1881-1962). These papers consist mainly of correspondence with colleagues. Also included are certificates and awards, records of his medical practice, and historical photographs.

Abstract:

George W. Merchant, a druggist, began manufacturing his Gargling Oil in Lockport, NY, in 1833. Merchant's Gargling Oil was not meant to be gargled, as the name suggests, but used as a liniment. Like many 19th-century patent medicines, it was advertised to effectively treat numerous ailments, including rheumatism, burns and scalds, flesh wounds, toothaches, cracked heels, hemorrhoids, and sprains and bruises. Around 1855, Merchant sold the business to M. H. Tucker, who continued manufacturing the Gargling Oil. The M. H. Tucker Company continued manufacturing Merchant's Gargling Oil until 1928, when the factory burned down. The Records of the M. H. Tucker and Company consist of seven items, all pertaining to the company's Merchant's Gargling Oil. The collection includes several bills of sale, dating from from 1856 to 1857; undated testimonials; and an almanac for the year 1870.

United States Army 95th Evacuation Hospital reports, 1944-1945 (inclusive)

Abstract:

The 95th Evacuation Hospital's official station was set up at Fort Breckenridge, Kentucky on August 25, 1942. In April 1943, the Hospital shipped out to North Africa from New York City. The unit served as support to the U.S. Fifth Army through the end of the North Africa campaign, as well as Italian campaigns at Naples-Foggia, Anzio, and Rome-Arno. In August 1944, the Hospital was reassigned to the U.S. Seventh Army, and supported it through campaigns in southern France, the Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe. The Hospital was still functioning on May 8, 1945 (V-E Day), and remained in Germany until June. It was officially inactivated at Camp Kilmer, Stelton, New Jersey on December 3, 1945. Abstract:

John Redman Coxe was born on 16 September 1773 in Trenton, N.J. and died in Philadelphia on 22 March 1864. He earned his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1794. Coxe held the positions of Professor of Chemistry (1809-1818) and Professor of Materia Medica and Pharmacy (1818-1835) at the University of Pennsylvania. One volume of notes (254 pages) taken by an unknown student from a course of lectures on materia medica delivered at the University of Pennsylvania by John Redman Coxe, dating from November 1824 to February 1825.
