George Coates papers, 1897; 1909-1910 (inclusive)

Abstract:

The George Coates papers cover the years 1897 and 1909 to 1910. The collection consists of two volumes, one of answers to surgical examination questions from the University of Pennsylvania in 1897; the other from 1909 to 1910, containing Coates' expenses for the years and what seems to be an address book of Philadelphia-area physicians. Also included in the collection are the questions to the examination questions. George Coates was Coates was an ear, nose, and throat specialist. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1874. He graduated with A.B. in 1894 and an M.D. in 1897 from the University of Pennsylvania. Coates served as Assistant Surgeon during the Spanish-American War in the United States Navy. Following his discharge from the Navy, Coates was a resident physician at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children until 1901, when he opened up his own practice at 1721 Pine Street in Philadelphia. Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon ephemera, 1862

Abstract:

In South Philadelphia, at the corner of Washington Avenue and Swanson Street, a neighborhood grocer named Barzilai Brown began distributing food to soldiers traveling to and from the nearby Navy Yard and railroads. This operation, originally referred to as "Brown's," became the Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon on May 27, 1861. The establishment grew and became a place of rest, relaxation, and, of course, refreshment for travel-weary soldiers, whom the saloon provided with food, drink, paper, and stamps. The Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon closed in late 1865. This small collection contains two Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon pieces of ephemera dating to circa 1862: a hand-colored receipt for 5 boxes of lint and a trade card for the saloon.

Abstract:

The College of Physicians of Philadelphia developed the Humanism in Medicine Program to help enrich the curriculum of local medical schools in the area. This initiative was conceptualized in the early 2000s and ended in 2007, with funding supported by Horace W. Goldsmith and Arcadia Foundations. The Program aimed to bridge the arts and humanities with medicine, inviting visiting scholars, doubling as successful poets and writers, to present their compositions and artists to exhibit their creations surrounding the core theme of hope and healing amongst pain. The Records of the Humanism in Medicine Program span from 1986 to 2007. The collection consists mostly of paper materials (with some mixed materials) involving speaker lectures or artist exhibitions offered at The College of Physicians of Philadelphia (CPP) during these years. Abstract:

The Section on Dermatology was established by Lawrence Parish and Joseph Witkowski on December 22, 1981. The requirements for membership were "a professional interest in and a respect for dermatology." The Section held four or five meetings a year on Wednesday evenings; these meetings generally included a lecture followed by a cocktail hour and dinner. In late 2005 or 2006, nearly all College sections were discontinued, including the Section on Dermatology. The Records of the Section on Dermatology span the years 1986 to 2001 and consist mainly of correspondence. General correspondence (1986 to 1997) files contain a brief history of the Section, thank-you notes for monetary donations, correspondence with speakers, and some membership lists, but focus mainly on the financial situation of the Section.
