Records of the Committee on the Joseph N. Pew Memorial Loan Fund, 1961-1985 (inclusive)

Abstract:

In December 1961, the College received a $25,000 gift from the Pew Memorial Trust. The gift was intended to help the College reach financial stability and to start a drive benefitting interns and residents in area hospitals. In response, the Committee on Internship and Residency was established in 1962. The Internship and Residency Committee sent out questionnaires to Philadelphia-area hospital administrators, residents, and interns. Data collected from residents and interns included marital status, professional goals, whether they had insurance, and whether they had loans from medical school. The purpose of the questionnaires was to establish whether the Philadelphia area had need of a loan fund (for residents and interns) sponsored by the College. Forty out of the forty-five hospitals contacted responded, and the majority recognized the need for such a program. Evelyn Cook Bauerle papers on Benjamin Gruskin, 1931-1951 (inclusive)

Abstract:

Evelyn Matthews Cook Bauerle was born in 1910 in Rahway Union, New Jersey. She graduated from Ursinus College in 1930, majoring in chemistry and biology, and assisted Benjamin Gruskin in setting up his new research lab at Temple Medical School, running most of tests summarized in Gruskin's published articles. She remained there until 1939. Bauerle died in 2002 in York, Pennsylvania. Benjamin Gruskin was born in 1878 in either Lithuania or Russia (accounts vary). He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1909, the Chicago College of Medicine and Surgery in 1910, and did a post-graduate course at the New York Post-Graduate Hospital and College. By 1930, he was working in a new lab at Temple Medical School. Gruskin's research at Temple focused on serological and intradermal tests for carcinoma and sarcoma, and intradermal tests for pregnancy and tuberculosis. Abstract:

This collection contains a small amount of George Rosemond's correspondence, 1978-1980, from his tenure as President of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. George P. Rosemond was born in 1910 in Hillsboro, North Carolina. He earned his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine in 1934 and completed his internship and residency at Temple University Hospital. He then joined the Department of Surgery at Temple, where he remained until he retired in 1981. In 1946, Rosemond was elected a Fellow of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia, and served as its President from 1978 to 1980. He died in Philadelphia in 2002.

Abstract:

This collection dates from 1974 to 1978, and documents John Hubbard's time as College President. It contains correspondence; committee and annual meeting reports, including the Long Range Planning Committee; information relating to the College's Continuing Medical Education Program for cardiovascular medicine; correspondence of the Section on Medical History; and a scrapbook of correspondence and other documentation about the Restoration Fund (part of the Third Century fundraising campaign). John Hubbard was born in Philadelphia 1903. He received his M.D. from Harvard Medical School in 1931. In 1939, Hubbard Dr. Robert E. Gross performed the first successful ligation of a patent ductus arteriosus at Children's Medical Center in Boston.
