These ballads were about love, religion, legends, current events, etc. and were printed and circulated in large quantities. Raymond H. Ferris (1890-1972), a University of Pennsylvania administrator, collected playbills and programs from Philadelphia theaters, dating from 1881 to 1901. The collection features playbills from the Academy of Music, Arch Street Theatre, Association Hall, Chestnut Street Opera House, Congress Spring Park, Eleventh Street Opera House, Garrick Theatre, Grand Opera House, Haverly's Theatre, McCaull's Opera House, New Arch Street Opera House, New National Theatre, Park Theatre, Philadelphia Lyceum, Temple Theatre, Walnut Street Theatre, and Winter Circus.

Abstract:

Wolrd's fairs and expositions have been held internationally from 1851 and continue into the present. This collection comprises written materials, memorabilia, and, to a more limited extent, other materials such as photographs and musical recordings from or related to world's fairs and expositions that took place between 1851 and 1992. Most expositions recognized by the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) are represented, as well as many that are not officially recognized by the BIE. Some non-world's fair events are also represented to a limited extent. While events from around the world are featured in the collection, it primarily centers on expositions that occurred in the United States.

El Nuevo teatro crítico, a monthly literary arts periodical was written and produced by Emilia Pardo Bazán (1851-1921), a Spanish novelist, critic, essayist, playwright, poet, and short fiction writer. From 1891 to 1893, a total of 30 volumes were produced, of which the University of Pennsylvania Rare Book & Manuscript Library is lacking no. 18 (June 1892) and no. 28 (April 1893).

Irene Eber gift of the Yedidya Geminder Memorial Collection of Sino-Judaica, circa 1940s-2018 (inclusive) 1970s-2010 (bulk)

Abstract:

Irene Eber (1929-2019) was a scholar and professor of Chinese intellectual history and the Jewish community in China. This collection, consisting almost entirely of photocopies of her research, is a resource for researchers interested in the Bible in China; Chinese and Yiddish literature and poetry; Jewish refugees in China, and specifically Shanghai; and the Jewish community in China before, during, and after World War II. In addition to Eber's research, there is a fairly robust grouping of her writings, although not all are complete. The collection, named by Eber in memory of her father, Yedidya Geminder who was murdered by the Nazis, contains no information about Geminder.

Thomas Waldman research collection on Nadar, 1972-2018 (inclusive)

Abstract:

Thomas G. Waldman (1938-2018) was a scholar of the history of Medieval France and an associate professor of history at the University of Pennsylvania. He envisioned a book and exhibit on photographer Felix Nadar's autograph album, called "Nadar and His World," that would bring together the subjects of Nadar's photographs, their autographs, and biographical sketches. While the project was not completed, Waldman's research is available through this collection.
