Overview and metadata sections

Audio cassettes and some transcripts of interviews with 55 Quakers, chiefly born in Chester County between 1889-1910. Interviews contain largely autobiographical data, as well as information about Quaker life in general, recollections of Chester County, and descriptions of farm life and histories of Friends meetings in Chester County. The project was conducted by the Chester County Library District, funded by Chester County Manpower Programs and the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting.

The collection contains 76 audio cassettes and some transcripts, plus 17 digitized mp3 surrogates of selected audiocassettes.

The collection is divided into two series:

  1. Transcriptions
  2. Cassette Tapes (76)

Chester County Public Library in Exton digitized the audio from this collection and has made them available at their listening stations within the library (except for five, which they have classified as restricted: Ann Passmore Webb, J. Smedley Thomas, Milo and Mabel Jackson, Ellen Cope, and Julian Baldwin.

Donor: Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, 1979

Material arranged and placed in 4 documents boxes, stored with RG 4 in basement of Friends Historical Library. Includes 76 audio cassette tapes, not all transcribed.

In 2023, London Grove Monthly Meeting arranged for vendor digitization of 17 of the audiocassettes. Digitized files (.wav preservation and .mp3 derivatives, with associated metadata) were shared with FHL and .mp3 files were published online in Digital Collections.
